,M What do the words Speech Department bring to mind? Most people think of debates, speech tour- naments, plays, colorful makeup and costumes, creative gestures, and appreciative audiences. The words Speech Department also mean individual quality, eloquence, and teaching students to develop their talents. The dedicated teachers of the Speech Department at ASH do all of these things. They add a dimension to ASH through which many students are able to express thern- selves. ' . 3 gs, Hx X . 4 1: g? C, .,.,.,, . A person's heritage is an important part of his life. Heritage includes language, culture, and ideas. lt means not only a nation, but people. Each individual has the privilege of learning about others as he learns about himself. By learning a second lan- guage, a student is given the opportunity to study a new culture. He is able to compare it with his own culture and is able to improve his own life by utiliz- ing his observations. The goal of the foreign lan- guage teachers at ASH is to teach students about others and to help them learn about themselves, not only as members of a certain race or nation, but also as individuals, ' V. From lf someone put you in a room with an Austrian peas- ant, a fruitmonger from Brazil, a Chinese ambassa- dor, and a doctor from Madagascar, and said, Unite these people! , what would you do? To get them on the same wavelength, turn on a stereo or show them a painting. To tones and colors they'll respond as one, for the arts join people as nothing else does. Thus ASH's fine arts department is a great asset to the school: through exciting individ- ual projects, it lends unity to a diverse student body. Another Mona Lisa? CLAUDE D. ANDREWS . . .
