A.S.H. Band to Austria LasT year, an inviTaTion To The IsT lnTernaTional Band EesTival, in Vienna, AusTria. was exTended To The Alexandria Senior I-Iigh School Band. direcTed by Jerry Payne. Upon receipT oT This honor, The 86 band members and The Band ParenTs' Club began an inTensive eTTorT To raise The money necessary Tor The Trip. They sold pens, greeTing cards, spagheTTi and gumbo supper TickeTs, held aucTions. rummage sales and worked The concession sTand aT baskeTbaII games. They sTarTed a mile oT quarTers campaign. secured Tinancial aid Trom local merchanTs, including 55,000 Trom Governor Edwards, and disTribuTed bumper sTickers all over Town - and - They raised S78,000l The band members also pracTiced while all This was going on. During The monTh oT June, jusT prior To deparTure on July 4Th, They IiTeraIIy worked nighT and day To prepare Tor judging aT The band TesTivaI where They would be in compeTiTion with bands Trom all over The world. Their hard work and diIigenT dedicaTion paid oTT since They were aT Their peak upon arrival in Vienna, oTTen called The music capiTal oT The world. AjudicaTion concerTs Tor all bands were held in The Vienna KonzerThaus, home oT The Vienna Philharmonic OrchesTra. The A.S.i-I. Band joined The company oT musicians Trom all over Europe, pasT and presenT, in perTorming on The sTage which has been The siTe oT Tamous musical presenTaTions Tor decades. DisTinguished musicians acTing as judges Tor The evenT were Dr. William D. Revelli, music direcTor oT The lnTernaTional FesTival, AIberT Ehler- mann Trom Caviers. France, and ProTessor Leo ErTI oT Salzburg. AusTria. These judges raTed The A.S.I'I. Band superior in The concerT compeTiTion - Truly a greaT achievemenT Tor boTh The band and Mr. Payne. Judges Tor The marching presenTaTion were RoberT F. O'Brien, direcTor oT bands aT The UniversiTy of NoTre Dame, and Major I-Iarold C. Johnson, direcTor oT The UniTed STaTes Air Eorce Bands in Wiesbaden. Germany. Again our band was given a superior raTing - This Time because oT Their TanTasTic march- ing Technique. BeTore and aTTer The week oT compeTiTion in Vienna, The band Toured ThroughouT Europe giving concerTs. RequesTs Trom various ciTies Tor A.S.I'I. Band appearances were seemingly endless. While in AmsTerdam, They were requesTed To march in The parade aT TheI972 Gorinchem lnTernaTional Music EesTival. The band sTruTTed proudly down The narrow brick sTreeTs which were lined wiTh large crowds. The jazz band also presenTed a special requesi' open air concerT in The AmsTerdam Park where The people oT AmsTerdam demonsTraTed Their appreciaTion by TrequenTIy breaking inTo sponTaneous applause. Innsbruck, AusTria broughT a concerT by The band on a scenic hiIITop. In Mariazell, AusTria, The jazz band perTormed Tor a capac- iTy crowd. In Eeldkirch, AusTria, The concerT band received THREE encores aTTer a parficularly Tine presenTaTion. In Vienna, our band was one oT only Tour bands parTicipaTing in The EesTivaI asked To do a special radio show which was broadcasT ThroughouT AusTria. All members oT The band Tound plenTy oT Time To enjoy Themselves. New Toods, new Triends, and new cusToms made The Three week Trip an unTorgeT- Table experience - one ThaT will be Treasured Torever. Ask an A.S.I-I. Band member whaT made an impression on him and you will receive a varieTy oT answers - FOOD - ice cream, huhn Ichickenl. goulash. poTaTo soupl - BEAUTY - mounTains, waTerTalIs, windmillsl - PEOPLE - wonderTuI Tour guides. Tabulous bus drivers, house moThers in Innsbruck! - MUSIC - ThaT oT oTher bands, and The music oT over ThirTy bands playing TogeTher aTTer only one hour oT pracTice, Dr. Revellil - SOUVENIRS - posTcards, waTches, cuckoo clocks! - FOREIGN MONEY - Francs. shillings. groes- chenl - SWITZERLAND - snow, cable cars, sTaying aT a ski resorTI The A.S.I-I. Band had The wonderTul opporTuniTy oT observing an enTirely diTTerenT way oT liTe. They were exposed To new and diTTerenT cusToms and meT Triendly, helpTuI people wherever They wenT. IT a search Through Ian- guage books Tailed To yield an appropriaTe conversaTionaI phrase - They Tound ThaT a smile was very helpTuI. Especially, The A.S.I-I. Band bridged The language gap wiTh Their beauTiTuI music. IT became mosT evidenT ThaT music can play a large role in undersTanding and improving relaTions beTween young people oT all counTries. I-IaTs oTT To The A.S.I-I.
