Mu Alpha Theta Last fall the Alexandria math department was invited to join the national Mu Alpha Theta. This was a great honor asthere are very few chapters. The local chapter was voted in by a seven member board. High scholastic rating in all subjects is required. The club was organized around Christmas, soon after it had been approved by the board. The twenty-four members, with Mrs. Halvorson as advisor, elected Keith McCoy president; Bill Unumb vice-president; and Bob Buuck secretary-treasurer. Anderson. Socratic Club After getting off to a slow start, the Socratic Club, local branch of Future Teachers of America, worked hard the rest of the year. Again the hi-lite was FTA day, when members of the club replaced the faculty for a day. Valuable experience was gained. The Banquet, held the evening of FTA Day, provided a good time to discuss the days events. A wide variety of programs were given at the semi-weekly meetings. The purpose of FTA is to acquaint prospective teachers with teaching opportunities, cultivate qualities essential to a teacher, foster development of student leadership and do teaching. Poster Club Formed last year, the Poster Club really got established this year. Although there are only eight members, the club got several requests to make posters for various school organizations. Meetings were irregular, held whenever it was seemed necessary, usually once every two months. Mr. Karl Christiansen was the faculty advisor and DuVonne Holmgren was the chairwoman. Debate Club The Debate Club was formed inOctober under the advisorship of Mr. Halvorson and Mr. Wittenberg. Officers elected were John Whalen, the president; Carol Jean Herbert, vice president; and Patti Hollingsworth, secretary-treasurer. Debate tries to improve speaking and logical thinking. The question for the year; Resolved that direct economic aid from the United States to individual countries should be limited to technical assistance and disaster aid.
