5 CTI118 ALE 1,140 ' THE CORPS OF CADETS HE CORPS OF CADETS of the Alexandrla Hngh S hool has completed the thtrd year of tt progress Let us talce a remmlscent glance at those years The campalgn for the organ1zat1on of a Corps of Cadets ln the Alexandrxa Hlgh School began m September 1928 The Corps was defrnxtely organized by February 1979 wlth an enrollment of one hundred forty cadets under the supervlslon of Major Chauncey McNe11l the first Federal Instructor for the Corps Three companles were formed wxth a Cadet Cap ta1n 1n charge of each All permanent officers were appomted with the exceptlon of Cad t Major The flrst Cadet Captalns were Captam Hancock Captaln Smlth and Captaln V10 lette Drill was conducted three afternoons each weelc after school hours Colonel Clarence Deems r was ass1gned by the War Department to the Alexandrta 1-11gh School as Professor of Mtlltary Sclence and Tactlcs tn uly 1929 Colonel Deems who comes from a famlly that for Eve generat ons has been represented 1n the Army of the Umted States IS a Vxrgxman and a graduate of West Point He 1S a veteran of the Phlllppme Insurrectxon and of the World War Durlng the World War he was 1n the battles of the Argonne St Mthlel and Chateau Thlerry he was awarded the Dxstmgulshed SCFVICB Medal for exceptlonally merxtorxous and dlstlngulshed servlces 1n the Held Durlng the four years rmmedrarely prlor to hls assignment to the Alexandrla 1-11gh School he was the Federal Supervlsor of all R O T C worlc ln Pennsylvama Maryland Vrrgtnta and the D1str1ct of Columbla The Cadets of the Alexandrla Htgh School are partlcularly fortu nate ln havmg as thelr commander a man of the exper1ence and ab111ty of Colonel Deems and are learnmg to apprectate more and more the character and callbre of such a leader Durlng the school year 1929 1930 the Corps made excellent progress under the mstruc tnon of Colonel Deems The Cadets were reorganlzed xnto three platoons composxng one company wlth Gorman Rldgely as Cadet Captam Dr1ll was conducted each school day dur mg school hours Rifles were lssued to the Corps by the Unlted States Government A Rlfle Team organlzed ln conjunctton wlth the Corps entered both the Third Corps Area and the Hearst Matches In May 1930 the Alexandrxa Corps of Cadets won second place mthxn four poxnts of Hrst place xn the mllttary tournament mn whlch four compantes of Cadets Company A Washlngton Lee Hlgh School Company B Washlngton Lee 1-llgh School Company D George Mason 1-hgh School and Company A Alewtandrla 1-lxgh School contested Early rn 1931 Captam Rldgelx recetved a commxsston as Cadet Major Lteutenant Wells was made Cadet Captaln The other ofhcers received thexr respectlve commissions or war rants The year 1930 31 has seen the completlon of another step toward the ultlmate goal, for vsh1ch the Corp IS strxvxng PBYTCCIIOI1 R 85 .23 fla- as - g-A ------ A.
