V. . . . .' . . rv . f lf was ALECKO ALEXANDRIA HIGH SCHOOL LI-XANDRIA HIGH SKHOOL How mam ttmes have we shouted that name on the athlenc held' We have c me to love our school durmg our too brtef sojourn under 1ts reg1me yet I wonder how many ol us lcnow 1ts hlstory a IIIQYOIW as mterestmg as our own experlence here has been? 1'or m ny years there had been ag1tat1on lor the LSf2ll'5llSl1f1lt.1'lI uf a publlc htgh school 111 the ctty of Alexandrla Some protested this btcause of the ncarncss to the large lugh schools of Washlngton and others because lugh school subjects were belng taught tn the elghth nlnth and tenth grades Ftnally those hghttng for the school won and a htgh school w as establ1shed at Lee School all grades above the seventh bemg el1m1nated Iess than a hun movement for a htgh school bulldmg was started resultlng 1n the present Alexandria High School ln 1915 After 1ts meager begmnmg the school grew rapldly Nme members composed the hrst graduatlng class whlle the present class w1ll number about nlncty hve The growth of our school IS remarkable 1n compar1son wxth the rather sl1ght growth of other Alexandrta enter prlses Its pertod of greatest expansxon was 1mmed1ately after the World War when a strong appeal was made to the masses for educat1on The present attendance IS now about SIX hundred and fifty It 1s rumored that George Mason I-hgh S hool w1ll shortly be con soltdated wlth us a movement wlnch 1f carrled through wtll brmg the enrollment to approx mmarely one thousand Ot course the teachlng staff has had to expand along w1th the student body At nrst there were s1x teachers now we have twenty sxx There have been etght prmcxpals Mr W A Anderson Major Conrad ohnson Major Stanley G Blanton Mr Brandon Trussell Mr Wood Mr Madlson Ray Mr R C Haydon and our good frlend Mr Henry T Moncure The Cadet Corps was hrst orgamzed by Major ohnson and proved of great beneht to the bows After the war tt w as not rcorgamzed untxl 1979 The Alexandr1a High School has advanced scholastlcally also Its standards have been raxsed and new methods of pedagogy xntroduced It was made an accredlted school by the Southern Assoclatlon of Schools and Colleges tn 1923 At that tlme there were about three hundred students Now the condmons are somewhat adverse to the best development of the school bulldlngs are overcrowded and equxpment 15 1nsulI1c1ent Let us hope that our parent learn the secret whlch those of 1914 lcnew and that we may soon see that long loolced forward to and much talked about new buxldmg E A 3
