Wkffhe ALE CK0 JUNIORS AND SENIORS PARTICIPATE IN ORATORICAL CONTEST HE Oratorlcal Contest was held on the nlght of Marclu 18 xn the Hugh School Audi torlum at 8 P M After Mr Moncure and the five speakers took their places a group of Hlgh School Cadets under the leadershxp of Cadet Captam Wells entered wxth the flag and led the audience ln the pledge of allegxance Selectlons on the plano were presented by Mr Gene Stuart of Washmgton D C and trombone solos were gtven bv Mr Wlllxam E Raymond of the U S Army Band Mr Moncure explalned the orlgln of these contests He lnformed the audlence that they had orlgxnated m Calxfornxa but were now Natlonal and Internatlonal The subjects of these OYACIODS must deal ln some manner wlth the COHSIIIUIIOU m the preparatlon of whrch If was hoped that the student mlght learn a lxttle more about hls government These con tests were sponsored by the leadmg newspapers of varxous dxstrlcts The dxstrlct wlnners were to be entered ln the Natxonal Contest and the wmners of thls IH the Internatlonal Contest The judges were Professors Warren West and Elmer Haynes of George Washxngton Unlverslty and Attorney Lmdsey Carne of Alexandrla George Duffey the hrst speaker was unable to complete hxs speech however he retlred wlth some grace and ln a manner whxch requxred courage a fact whlch the audlence ap precrated mg of the nxght though paradoxlcally speaklng hls oratlon mlght be said to have been weakened by overemphasts The next orator was Haywood Davis Hls subject The Constltutlon a Guarantee of Llberty to the Indxvxdual was ldentlcal wlth that of Mr Luckett but was treated ln a far dlfferent manner FFRUCIS Rosenberger gate an account of the case McCulloch vs Maryland and 1ts bearmg on the Constltutxon Thxs oratxon was of pecuhar lnterest because of IIS rather umque choxce of toplc and method of treatment xmmy Luckett s speech was the clxmax of the evenmg He spoke on The Constltutlon a Guarantee of Lxberty to the Indlvldual Hts oratton was faultless ln every way accordxng to the declslon of the judges who llkewxse recommended that Francls Rosenberger be con sxdered as holder of second place The enthuslasm forcefulness and lnterest ln the work of all contestants attested to ex cellent tramtng recelved at the hands of thexr coach Mxss Eleanor Applch March Z3 1931 The announcement was made that ames Luckett our oratorlcal wlnner through a mlsunderstandlng regardlng the age limit would be unable to represent Alexandrla Hlgh School The alternate Francxs Rosenberger automatically became our representative with Haw wood Davls second Aprxl 8 Latest news-Our oratorlcal candldate Haywood DAVIS won hrst place m the COITIPCIIIIVC contest wxth George Mason Hrgh School Success to our vxctor m all future un dertakmgs G 42 ffl Ex' f . 14 ft fc, X ' u ' 1 F ll - , . . 7 . 7 7 . , . .. , ' , .
