History Twelve long years ago we, sixty-six bright eyed boys and girls, under the guidance of Mrs. Vance Garrett and Miss Carolyn Crowell, began a most exciting phase of our lives, obtaining an educa- tion. We were thrilled at the thoughts of the many good times we were to have and we soon felt'that our little heads were beginning to swell with knowledge. As our first year came to a close, we could look back and recall the many friends we had made and the wonderful guidance and counseling our teachers had given us. Before we realized it, we were eighth graders and anxiously awaiting graduation. Many students had joined us in previous years and our group had increased considerably. To us the memory will always linger of the night when we, dressed in white, marched down the long auditorium aisle to receive our eighth grade certificates. In the fall of '51 a group of sixty-nine uncertain students began their long journey through high school as freshmen. Mrs. S. C. Burke and Mr. Rufus Abernathy were chosen to guide us and keep us from straying from our path. We chose Billie Ann Atkinson and Barbara Justice as lead- ers of Section I and Section A, respectively, Sara Mann and Marco Mora, assistants: Rebecca Hedgepeth and Mary Cates, recorders, and Jimmy Clark and Margaret Marshall, accountants. Judy Bowman and Margaret Crawford represented us in the Student Council. We returned in September 1952, after a sum- mer's rest, ready to resume our studies. Mrs. Robert Scott and Mr. Rufus Abernathy were our advisors. Jimmy Clark and Marco Mora were elected Presidents, Bill Guthrie and Clendell Holt, Vice Presidents, Sandra Whittemore and Kenneth Dilks, Secretaries, and Judy Loy and Billy Cheek, Treasurers. Margaret Marshall and George Bason were sent to the Student Council. ln May we faced regents for the second time, and after some worry, we managed to pass them. We were then ready to 'enjoy a long awaited vacation. We came back to school in 1953 as a combined group of Juniors, realizing we had a big year ahead of us. This year we had Mrs. G. B. Robbins as our advisor. Recognizing the importance of capable leaders, we chose Judy Bowman, Presi- dent, Mary Cates, Vice President, Gail Cox, Sec- retary, and Lucille Draughn, Treasurer. To rep- resent us in Student Council we chose Buddy Phillips, Billy Cheek. and Sara Lane Wells. We had the thrill of choosing our class rings, class colors, and our motto. Our rings possessed blue stones and a mount which featured the book of knowledge and service on one side and the North Carolina seal on the other. ln May the long awaited Junior-Senior banquet took place at the Alamance Hotel. For the theme we chose L'Maytime. The tables were decorated with small white picket fences on which were perched tiny bird houses and various types of birds. Each table was centered with a miniature maypole with the streamers leading to the individual places where favors of little birds and candy eggs were found. With eager anticipation, we assembled for our final year in 1954. As class officers for the last time we elected George Bason, President, Bill Guthrie, Vice President, Billie A11n Atkinson, Secretary, and Margaret Marshall, Treasurer. Billy Cheek. Gail Cox, and Judy Loy represented us in Student Council, with Billy as President and Judy as Secretary. We began the tremendous task of producing the Wilsonian. Margaret Crawford was selected Editor-in-Chief of this project. With our eyes toward graduation, we chose Candy Phillips and Therman Clark as our mascots. Another event which we are looking forward to is our trip to Washington, D.C. We are ex- tremely anxious to visit the many historical places and to learn more about how our government operates. We leave our high school days behind, our motto, 6'Not at the Top, But Climbing uppermost in our minds. Although each of us goes his own way, we will often think fondly of one another and of our memorable experiences at Alexander Wilson High. MARGARET ANNE CRAWFORD Class Historian iii.
