MGR.: Greg Jolley AD EDITOR: Nancy Hare AS YOU LOOK THROUGH THE PAGES OF THIS BOOK Think back ... Now what comes to mind? Diaper rash, Gerbers strained carrots, and Cap- tain Kangaroo?! Hold it! I didn’t mean that far back. I meant last year at Alexander. It was great wasn’t it? Just think of all of the times you had your locker stacked and all the lockers you stacked in return. And is there any- one who wasn’t involved with a food fight? Think of all the romances you would have missed if you hadn’t read the restroom walls at least once a week. And how could you forget the last day of school before Christmas vacation. How everyone (including the teachers) got into The Fonz of Alex? the action. Doing one thing or another (usually it was the other!!!). Skipping as many classes as mmmm mmmm -mmm mmm mmm mmm mom possible and know that they’ll never catch you because there are too many other kids skipping classes too!! Yes it was a great year! And I don’t think anyone will ever stop REMINISCING!!! Is this how you do it Don? AND REMEMBER THE VARIOUS EVENTS . . . THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THE YEAR OF Under the right arm we have Right Guard, under the left ... John spells it all out for us!!! What are you guys playing with? What is this? A lineup for the most photogenic? Keep your hands on the table, Bobo. 4 Reminiscing 1978-79 YOU WILL REMEMBER THE HAPPY TIMES THE SAD TIMES, EVEN THE CRAZY TIMES 6 Reminiscing AND YOU WILL REMEMBER THAT EACH AND I’m really a very interesting guy. O.K. girls, highschoolers don’t play duck, duck, goose. Not now Sam, everyone’s looking!!! EVERYONE OF US WAS A PART OF THOSE TIMES 8 Reminiscing A sandwhich, for a half a cookie and two peaches? FF space, dd, space THESE ARE SOME REASONS WHY Reminiscing 9 WE WILL ALL REMEMBER THE kPAflWjy SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF ’79! Reminiscing 11 12 Reminiscing Mr. B. these Govn't notes are obscene!!! Future President!?! What happened? They’re all wrinkled! 14 Reminiscing Such enthusiasm!!! Reminiscing 15 Jay, are you telling me there's no Santa (Claus?) Sophomore rah. You’re gonna regret that. — 16 Reminiscing SENIORS ’79 Seniors 17 “Hot Blooded” Seniors” “HOT BLOODED”, that’s us. The class of ’79. But to clear up any confusion, “Hot Blooded” does not mean we all have high blood pres- sure. We might be a little Hyper ac- tive now and then but what do you expect from SENIORS?!? Besides we’re allowed. Merriam-Webster’s definition of a senior is someone who is more ad- vanced in dignity. Imagine that!! I wonder if they’d rewrite the book if they saw OUR class!?! Mike, you sure look comfortable! RIFE Graduation ... soppy eyes, runny noses, caps that won’t stay on (with or without bobby pins), and pro- grams being used for fans. Flash- bulbs going off everywhere. It’s Graduation. A time of mixed emo- tions. A time when everyone is hug- ging everyone else. It’s a time to say good-bye to friends and promise to keep in touch. Then there’s that one special friend that is always the hardest to say good-bye to. Even though it might be easier just to avoid it, you can’t, because the friend is always there. It’s the friend you've loved and defended for four years and probably will the rest of your life. No you’ll never forget this friend. It’s Alexander. A Graduation to remem- ber and a school to remember. That’s what 1979 will always mean to us! Seniors 41 SENIORS ARE “REUNITED44 AGAIN A beautiful song. A beautiful feeling. “REUNITED”. A time to realize that this will be the last time we will be “Reunited” in this way as the Class of ’79. On that day there was a muted feeling among us all. We were confident, happy, and full of unsurmounted joy. We were classmates and we were “REUNIT- ED”!!! 44 Seniors Hey Joe, what happened to your clothes? What’s so funny Diane? The Junior operated candy store once again this year was a home away from home for 30,000 mice. Somehow, even with our well fed furry friends, we managed to make a small profit. In November Mrs. Peyton converted 24 of us into “actors.” But the play would not have been possible without the stage crew, who designed a beautiful set for the great performance. After everyone memorized their lines, the play, “Prime Time Crime”, was a huge success. With December came basketball games and all of the headaches that come with them. Have you ever tried to sell 2 reese cups and a snickers to a 5 year old with 25 pennies and a marble? All in all it was a lot of fun, and we managed to make quite a bit of money. And then, what everyone had been waiting for all year. The Prom. A lot of people worked hard for it. Then finally it was here with lots of fun and laughs, and maybe a tear. And the first Prom for most of us was over. Now as we promote to Seniors and look forward to our next Prom, we will definitely keep ... If it weren’t for them we’d probably all be anemic. They really picked the right profession because everyone knows that the way to a Spartan’s heart is through his Tum-Tum. Then there are the janitors. They see to it that we don’t pick up any kind of disease by keeping the school clean. Everyone loves them and would like to have a few at home to keep things from growing in the dust bunnies under their beds. The bus drivers are those guardian angels who see that we get to school and back home all right. They also clean up lost breakfasts and keep you from getting something important torn off by not letting you hang out the windows. 84 Faculty Bus Driver Linda Allman Bill Barringer William Carter Rex Cheadle, Sr. Rex Cheadle, Jr. Arnold Clark June Gambill Malcolm Grueser David Harner Earlene Hawk Library Martha Bitters Librarian William Sfakianos Guidance Counselor VoAg Industrial Arts Guidance Don Van Nostran Greg Gilders Vocational Agriculture Industrial Arts How do you decide whether to take VoAg and or Industrial Arts? Third you go Sally Fcallock Psychologist see Mrs. Feallock have her analyze your psychological need for these classes. Last but not least you find out if your wanted in these classes. Assignment sheet? What assignment sheet? You mean that paper that I used for spitwads? “Is this French or Spanish? French? It’s no wonder I couldn’t follow in this Spanish book.” Besides French and Spanish we also have Latin. If your really into languages you can take all three. Even if you only take 1 of these three you’ll still be a POLY- GLOT!! “Hey, who threw that paperwad?” “Oh ? !? , I’ve got a math test next period!” “What a rush!” “One more paperwad and someone’s getting their face rearranged.” “What a rush!” “I wrecked the old man’s car last night. Somehow I got into a cow pasture ran over a cow.” So goes an everyday study hall. “What a rush!” English Janet Peyton English We learnt a lot in Englush. We were learnt adjecktives nouns herbs. Adjecktives are things you put in front of nouns to make look strange. Herbs don’t have anything to do with Englush. They chust taught them ‘cause it might help when we have to eat. Now for a look at the exciting world of music at Alex ... Band is an O.K. class. It is more re- laxed, generally, than most classes. It also is good for the imagination ... “Why wasn’t I here for rehearsal? Oh yeah! My pet hamster’s aunt died, wouldn’t you go to her funeral?” One of band’s main advantages is you can sneak off to the bus early. Notice we said “can” since no band member would want to do that and miss after- noon announcements. The one drawback to band is when you’re supposed to practice music at home that’s 95% rests! The answer is easy, our three intelligent, stimulating, invi- gorating, thought provoking, history teachers, (that ought to get me at least a B + ). Government is a required subject, so even if you think it’s boring you’ll have to grin and bare it, but only for only for one year! But trust me, with our teach- ers it’s not boring! Science Gary Dunfee General Science, Chemistry, Physics I didn’t want this picture in here! If you’re looking for a really memorable class, I have just the thing for you. Science. First let’s take a look at Mrs. Ball’s class. It’s just the thing for people who like learning about living things and cutting up dead ones. And if you’re lucky, Mrs. Ball might whip some humor on you now and then. The idea sort of boggles the mind, doesn’t it? Now picture this ... while taking one of Mrs. Ball’s quizes that only she can do so well, the silence is broken by some sort of sonic boom across the hall, that’s Mr. Dunfee’s class. The only class that turns everyone into a regular little Albert Einstein. Some of them may be “clumsy” Albert Einsteins or “slow” Albert Einsteins, but why get technical? Mr. Dunfee’s classes are always so enlightening. You discuss things like, liquids, solids, and what happened on Saturday Night Live. I guess you could say he has a double job. Watching the kids and watching what the kids watch. 91 Faculty Home Economics Lcsa McDaniel Home Ec Jamie Tevis Family Living, Home Ec Cooking, Sewing,' Home Furnishings, Family Living are all part of the Home Ec. Most people get the wrong idea when they hear the word Latin! The first thought is always, “Wow a dead language,” but if everyone could have seen our Latin I, II III classes they would know we’re crazy. This years’ activities included Pumpkin Carving in Oct. Here everyone tried to carve theirs the fastest, afterwards we sent them to all three of the grade schools. In Dec. we had our famous Christmas Dance. We took time to set up a light show decorate cupcakes to sell. The dance was a success! The Latin Club also discussed having a Toga Party”, which will be held in the next two years (hopefully). The Latin Club of Alex knows how to have fun, we won the volleyball game between the clubs, but most of all we worked hard all year in class to have our other activities as well (Even if we gave Mrs. Kaldis a hard time)! If anyone has a question about joining Latin Club, ask anyone who is in the club or knows someone in the club, they will tell you it’s worth the time. Organizations 129 G R E A S E FHA Hero had it’s usual active year participat- ing in school, community and state activities. School activities included a Craft Fair, money making projects, refreshments for the annual Open House and the preparation of dinner that evening for the teachers. Community projects included the March of Dimes, Children’s Hospital and Beacon School where we contributed in both service and money. With this busy schedule we still found time to work on our State Degrees. Here we must show growth in school, community and personal levels of achievement. Although we worked hard there was still much fun and social interaction as well as the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Officers: J. Green, Rec.; J. Thomas, Rec.; P. Next came Parlimentary Procedure Public Speaking in which we won a 1st, 2nd a honorable mention. In the winter months we sponsored a basketball tour between local FFA Chapters of which we took 1st place. We also had a sleigh riding party where much food was consumed. Then came the busy part of the year. Awards were to be applied for and many weeks of work were ahead. The long hours trying times give much pleasure come award time. At the district banquet we won five 1st place proficiency awards, one 2nd one 3rd along with sec. treas. books and a district officer, we also received a superior chapter award again this year. In April we attended the State Convention. There the chapter was recognized by receiving its 1st State Farmer Degree, being awarded to Kim Kyle. This is the first State Farmer Degree awarded since consolidation of the three schools. Our awards banquet was held in May at the Extension Office. There several students were recognized for their accomplishments in the chapter. At the end of the school year the chapter held a pit roast to finish the year. But do you know Who’s responsible for it? The Spartan Times Club of course. An organization for people who like to write and draw. One that brings a lot of people a lot of enjoyment (and some- thing to do at lunch). Keep up the good work Spartan Times. Organizations 133 s A R G E N T P E P P E R S L H C B A N D This, the section on the band, unlike most of the articals in a yearbook is not the least bit humorous. It is down right impossible to find something funny about getting up at 6:00 a.m. and walking onto the middle of a cold wet foot- ball field (before breakfast)! This is what every member of the Alexander band did for 5 days during band camp. Fine you say ... then what? I’ll tell you. When football season comes along, it rains, and when concert time rolls around and you need practice, school is out because of snow, and when you go to a marching contest it rains again. This is most definitely not funny. The most unfunny thing that happened all year, though, was when the band had to march in a Halloween parade and everyone complemented Mr. Lindsay on his costume. (He wasn’t wearing one.) This was definitely not funny! If they ever find out I’m faking ... This year along with going to band camp, at Rio Grande College, they also went to flag and ma- jorette camp. The week is solely de- voted to the flag or ba- ton. I’ve discovered that a “dummy” isn’t an unintelligent person, a “master” isn’t the boss, or that “copy” doesn’t mean that you are going to rewrite something. There are a great deal of words that have double meanings when working on the yearbook, but when we record “The Times of OUR Lives” that is exactly what we mean. We, the Staff, hope that this recording will provide everyone that reads this book a chance to view “The Times of OUR Lives” 138 Organizations Seated: Deadre Weiss, Jennifer Brooks, Siri Kuhre, Tara Standing: Jackie Cline, Greg Jolley: Business Manager, Theresa French, Cathy Coen. Oh don’t get me wrong, there was a large amount of ex- citement along with hopes and fears, anticipation, and relief. The gals checking to make sure ever- ything is okay, the guys making sure everything is just so-so. But then it happened. It started to RAIN!!! No one faired well. By the time the ceremonies were over everyone was drenched. But this makes the Homecoming of ’78- ’79 unique in its’ own way.
