Ann Wood; Editor Janet Van Dyke; Assistant editor Virginia Jordan; Ad editor Joie Shingler; Business manager We, the staff, hope you enjoy this book, as much as we “enjoyed” putting it together! Reflections J Mrs. Ball Mrs. Blickle; advisors The Annual Staffs work is never done! (until June if we’re lucky.) We work, hope, and mainly pray for the book to be good. This year, as always we have two patient advisors; Mrs. Ball and Mrs. Blickle. Thank goodness they’re around, because the entire staff has problems remembering things — like deadlines! And what would we do without Mr. Barnhill?! There wouldn’t be any of these fabulous color pictures this year. REFLECTIONS OF SENIORS ... See, I got a Ragedy Ann for Christmas! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s a flag! Reflections of the way we once were. Can you believe it — Seniors at last. Do you believe that when we were taking milk breaks in kindergarten Mr. Barnhill was appearing in a senior section of a yearbook at Shade? On to high school! Terrorized on opening day. School’s been a second home for us for the last twelve years. Where’s the elevator to get to the Biology It’s been fun, exciting, sad, boring, and valuable. There’s room? Boy, were we taken advantage of! been Biddy Basketball, the graduation dance in Jr. High Sophomores — only three more years to go. when you had to suffer the embarrassment of being seen by English, World History, Home Ec II, Vo Ag. your friends with a girl. Juniors — candy at last — dances — prom decorating — tuxes and long dresses. May 30 — Seniors, at last!! 4 Reflection Let’s see, you spell go, G-O-E, don’t you: Another great year in football. Then someone turned off the gas. No school during January — would you believe — bored at home! Spring was great, flowers, fresh air, the prom as a BIG senior. Graduation — joy, sadness, memories, and expectations. Thanks Alex you’re a part of us, we’ll never forget you ... Reflections 5 “Actually, Mary, I don’t see what you see in him! ■ Underclassmen — Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen — These are the people who are looked down upon by seniors, but who, believe me, do not look up at them. Most come to school with only one thing in mind: GET ROWDY! The freshmen TRY to ACT like everything is under control. Sophomores have to keep up to the standards set by the last sophs. The teacher’s lounge gossip centers around the Juniors, who just keep finding new ways to cause trouble. The UNDERCLASSMEN!!! OF UNDERCLASSMEN That’s not what I said! Alright Bobo, off with your shirt! Reflections 7 Don’t worry Kel, they’re all there! Tom South Lynn Hart: Homecoming King Queen. Unknown to most people, school life at Alex begins in July with cheerleading camp, two-a-day football practices, and band camp. We planned on having pictures of cheerleading camp this year, but they haven’t passed the sensors yet! For more info contact any Alexander cheerleader. We’re afraid no comments were received from band members about camp, and two-a-days must have been well worth the effort, because the Alexander Black Pack had another terrific season! The Alexander Golf team was next to deserve recognition as they ended their season with a trip to Groveport. School life was slightly interrupted after Christmas vacation ... H Reflections OF SCHOOL LIFE?? ... due to the unbelievable wintery weather, which did our basketball teams no justice ... ... We’ve always considered ourselves ‘cool’ at Alexander, but 40 degrees in Dunfee’s room is going alittle too far! It got so cold that some male students and faculty decided to grow ‘facial fur’, while the other half ‘grinned and bared’ it! Coach Barnhill was truly an inspiring asset to our school at this time, starting baseball practices even before the snow had a chance to depart! This will be a year to remember! Well, here we go again! On the ?!?, Milligan!!! Reflections 9 nex ico. I Future Home wreckers of America. Most students would have to agree that school here at Alex is pretty special. The main reason we feel this way is because of the organizations. There is a place for everyone in the clubs, be it one of the foreign languages, FHA, FFA, GAA, or Pep Club. Last but not least is the Annual Staff. Thqre are still those who happen to be there when needed. So if you feel left out yell and someone will let you in! 10 Reflections Where did everybody go? Here comes the other band. Let’s get out of here! 76- 77! Reflections 11 m % REFLECTIONS OF SPORTS 76- 77 Night life at Alex. ' m—m That was a low blow, Green! Alexander athletics — definitely the place to be, whether you want to actively participate or just be Joe Superfan. You can play or back football and golf in the fall, basketball and volleyball in the winter and baseball, softball and track in the spring. There’s one thing that all these sports have in common and in the following two pages you’ll see the coaches, players, cheerleaders, band members and fans that make that one thing happen. That one particular thing spanning from our Black Pack to our track team is SPARTAN PRIDE! Reflections 13 Well now for the truth about them. We probably wouldn’t know what to do without them but couldn’t they do something besides giving us homework, tests, and detentions. HOW’S A PERSON SUPPOSED TO HAVE ANY FUN IF Teachers should be held in the highest honor. They are the allies of legislators; they have agency in the prevention of crime; they aid in regulating the atmosphere, whose incessant action and pressure cause the life-blood to circulate, and to return pure to the heart of the nation.” Mrs. Sigourney “Chicago?? YOU’RE ALWAYS BUSY? 14 Reflections SENIORS . . . ‘THE CLASS OF ’77” OFFICERS: Byron Green — President, Jeannie Boggs — Secretary, Gil Elmore — Vice President, Teresa Walsh — Treasurer. Gone are the seniors from the Class of ’77. With them they have taken many fond memories. Those that began four seemingly short years ago, as they look back at them during their last days at Alex- ander. The struggling freshmen who once fought and fended for themselves against the harassment of the upper classmen. Today the seniors who fight to cause the freshmen class to struggle and fend for themselves. This is just one memory out of so many fabulous events from over the years. There were many others; freshmen class play, sophomore slave day, jr. class play, jr.-sr. proms, ballgames, dances, senior skip day, and the all-night party, and just plain everyday school life. All of these things just seem yesterdays away as that final commencement day draws closer. After- wards the memories may fade quickly at first with the many new adventures they have to face. Many years from now the Class of ’77 will look back at all these high school memories and realize the true and lasting importance of them ... REFLEC- TIONS ... 18 Seniors Mike ... Seniors 21 GRADUATION “77” m Early in 1977 we heard this strange announcement on the intercom: would Seniors please stop by the guidance room before school to be measured for caps and gowns and fill out your name the way you would like to have it on your diploma.” In May we got those caps and gowns and boy did they fit good. Good for nothing! The only thing those things were good for were to keep things hot. They were great for that! Why am I so perfect? And our next Talent Search contestants are ... The Four Seniors! The height of confusion. A time of indecision. “Yes, you may kiss my hand!” Seniors 23 SENIORS OF 77 Bonnie Lou Allen French Club 9, 10, 11, 12; F.H.A. 9, 10, 11, 12; Pep Club 9, 10, 11, 12; Style Show 9; Chess Club 10; Beta Club 10, 11, 12; Hon- or Roll 10, 11, 12; Prom Committee 11; Jr. Gradu- ation Attendant; Who’s Who Among American High School Students 12 Kenneth Randall Allen F.F.A. I hope he doesn’t call on me. Late August, swimming at the pool in the afternoon, going to the drive-in at night, living the good life. Then all of a sudden its up at 6:45 A.M. stumbling sleepy-eyed out to the bus. Its the first day of school! Got to check out those new foxy ladies and guys. Looking up homeroom assignments — lockers — would you believe I’ve been here 4 years and I’ve never had a locker that both doors worked. Homeroom, get that class schedule. But Mr. Sfa- kianos, I only have six conflicts. Eventually we did get schedules and did make it to class. Seniors 43 44 Seniors ‘Kenny, the woods are back that way!’ Warm days, crystal blue skies and football. The Spartan Black Pack is successful again. Tunnels, hot dogs, hot chocolate and after game dances. Midnight flicks, harrassing the students, McDonalds. Winter finally arrived and we were looking forward to Christmas vacation. Only trouble with SE Ohio during the winter is that its so ugly and gray — it never snows. January 7 to February 14 it snowed and snowed and snowed some more. No school! Finally we started to worry about make up days. Would we graduate on time? Brace yourself! Tami’s typical senior attitude. Seniors 45 Spring finally came and we were so glad to be able to get outside again. It was baseball, softball, and track. Dates, cutting out of school early, getting ready for our party. The party was great — picnic at Lake Snowden, movie at the high school, all night at Baker Center. It was the first time in my life I ever went to sleep in a bowling alley. Just a few more days to go. We picked up our caps and gowns and the reality of the situation finally hit us. Practice, pictures and all of a sudden it was 7:30 P.M., May 22. Boy was it hot! We marched in and took our seats. Speeches, Mr. Brooks said his farewells, finally it was time to take that brief walk across the stage to get that little piece of paper we spent 12 years of our life to get. Seniors 47 REFLECTIONS OF SENIORS No, I’m not doing anything tonight. 48 Seniors Roses and tears, family, friends and farewells. Suddenly we were alone in an empty hall with only the echo of past memories in our minds. Not much time for sadness — too many parties to go to. Could you tell me how to get to Haseley’s again? A few friends, talking, drinking and eating. See you again! It seemed more a hope than a statement. REFLECTIONS OF SENIORS Please, could you tell me what class this is? I’m only resting my eyes Mrs. Rauschenberg. Now I know that one is a fastball, two is curve but what is seven fingers and three toes. This year’s juniors will be the most talked about class for years to come. This year’s juniors are making sure that no juniors in the future, or those of the past, will ever be able to keep pace and set the standards as they have done. It may have seemed to the rest of the school that we had never seen a lunch line before, but little did they know we were training for the Olympics. A break in our class schedule came the day we took the GATB test. We soon discovered our peg days hadn’t ended when we left kindergarten. Then came a winter break, five weeks of it. Spring came and so did the end of the year. It hardly seemed possible our freshmen year was over and we would soon be sophomores. Robert Frost 83 LIFE Feeding two?!? The end of August came and once again the school was alive. Old and new faces were seen. In a couple of days we were settled into a routine. Pep Rallies, Homecoming week, Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track all added enjoyment to our dull schedule of classes. With the Spring came a new disease called Spring Fever, the urge to be outside instead of in school learning. Then came graduation and the heartbreak of seeing the seniors leave. With the last day of school came the excitement of three month vacation but also a twinge of sadness for never again would there be a year like 76-77. We’ve had some really good times in band this year. It all started when band camp rolled around, from 9:00 to 3:00 p.m. the week before school. (Those weren't exactly the good times we remember!) Anyway, getting back to the good times (GOOD TIMES? WE HAD GOOD TIMES IN THE BAND?) Oh well, I guess a few white lies never hurt anyone, right? Anyway, we did have fun during football season. The band went to every game and performed at half-time and the victory marches when we won, which was most of the time. We usually went to McDonalds after the away games. We went to a band contest in Athens and won second place!! (Of course there were only two bands in our category?) We had a Christmas concert and a Spring Concert, which both went pretty well. We had a band banquet which was nice also. To top if all off, at the beginning of autumn, the band went to Kings Island for a day. We left early in the morning on Saturday and got back around midnight. It was a lot of FUN! : - 3. ■ —ULV 1 Field Commander: Karen Strausbaugh 116 DRILL TEAM, MAJORETTES, AND ... Sports 125 As they move across the dark field, one terrific mass, glowing in white jerseys, the tension seems to build to an unbearable point. The strength and power burning inside this pack is felt by all. The pride of these players is shared by all of Alexander. The long hours of grinding, pushing, demanding practices is about to be put to the test as two teams battle for a victory. And, for an instant, as the Black Pack slowly begins to pick up their pace — like a locomotive increasing its speed — surely and steadily — you can feel that excitement and tension, the tremendous ambition and courage, the energy and strength. All at once, the moment is here, you feel a tingle go up your spine as the mighty Spartans burst onto the field once again! — Kizzi Elmore 126 Sports VARSITY BASKETBALL 76-77 SEATED: Blaine Gabriel, Curtis Wooten, David Reed, Roger Williams, Tim Wooten, Jim King. They’ve got a better than half chance! It seems that seniors always work four times harder than they did their freshmen year. You ask why? “O.K., why?” It could be that they figure if they’re going to try something new, they might as well go all out and get a little recognition! Well, that’s what this whole section is about! We, the staff of the Spartan Shield, agree that this might be their last chance, too. Actually we’re all terribly proud of our seniors, and why not? They all deserve a little recognition for the special things they do. Your senior year is the last year to achieve greatness ... in high school that is ... and many of our seniors have! But what drives these individuals? Is it selfsatisfaction? Honor? or just a last all-out try and actually being good at something!
