IT’S Gft£ T TO LIW People may think conditions are bad now, but we have it good compared to the lives of our forefathers. They sacrificed themselves to make our lives easier by fighting to provide us with many freedoms, such as freedom of speech, press, and religion. Another very important right given to us was the right to vote. These freedoms and rights are a few of the many reasons why. .. IT’S GREAT TO BE ALIVE! Every country has its own flag. Our flag did not always look the way it does today. In the early days the colonists lived in thirteen separate colonies, each with its own flag. The first days of the Revolutionary War, the colonists carried their old flags into battle. They needed one flag to stand for all the colonies fighting together. The American flag was to have a star and a stripe for each of the thirteen colonies. The Betsy Ross Flag with the stars arranged in a circle was based on the idea that no colony should take precedence. This flag evolved into our present day flag. All other flags soon disappeared after the Stars and Stripes was adopted, yet the insignia shown on some of them appears occasionally on a state flag. Betsy Boss Flag DON'T TREAD ON ME ------------------------------ Gadsden Flag Bennington Flag I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic, a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its constitu- tion, to obey Us laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies. William Tyler Page ADMINISTRATION Be Americans. Let there be no sectionalis7n. no North, South, East or West: You are all dependent one on another and should be one in union. In one word, be a nation: be Ameri- cans, and be true to yourselves. —George Washington First President Superiijteijdeijt Raymond G. Brooks John Adams Second President Thomas Jefferson Third President James Madison Fourth President Principal D. Vincent Ford Declaration of Independence: This holy band of our Union. —Thomas Jefferson o mu ialute j9 Great Heritage Benjamin Franklin: The greatest man and ornament of the age and country in which he lived. —Thomas Jefferson When we are planning for posterity, we ought to remember that virtue is not hereditary. —Thomas Paine Today is yesterday’s pupil. — Benjamin Franklin One man with courage makes a majority. — Andrew Jackson Thomas Jefferson: A gentleman of thirty-two, who could calculate an eclipse, survey an estate, tie an artery, plan an edifice, try a case, break a horse, dance a minuet and play the violin. —James Parton National honor is national property of the highest value. We admit of no government by divine right . . .the only legitimate right to govern is an express grant of power from the governed. —William Henry Harrison —James Monroe I dont't know who my grandfather was; lam much more concerned to know who his grandson will be. —Abraham Lincoln Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, riches take wings. Only one thing endures, and that is character. — Horace Greeley Providence has showered on this land blessings without number, and has chosen you as the guardians of Freedom, to preserve it for the benefit of the human race. BOLIN KENNETH DICKEN DEBBIE GABRIEL ROBERT CURTIS GWINN LESLIE HENDERSON KEN MACE DARRELL SLONE STEVE WRIGHT No you can't borrow my leg, Susan! It’s been a big year. Our football team went 9 and 1, our basketball teams won the TVC crown, Gilders broke the state high school pole vault record, and then it was the Bicentennial year, the celebration of our nation’s 200th birthday. But to us, we seniors, it was more than all of these, it was OUR year. We are the class of ’76 and we always will be. As we grow older and look back on the things that have happened during this year, we’ll all probably realize that we should have paid a lot more attention to the happenings of the Bicentennial, especially when our children ask what happened during the nation’s 200th birthday and we have to answer “I don’t know, I was a senior that year and I didn’t much care what was happening with the Bicentennial.” We spent the year showing everyone who we thought was boss. This was going to be our last year at Alex and we thought we had to make it a good one. We wanted to make sure everyone remembered the class of ’76, and we did it! We made it a year to be remembered. Because we all realized that, IT’S GREAT TO BE ALIVE! Grateful cheerleaders. Working in the coat check. MAKING THT Bf ST Of OUfi LAST YfAft AT ALfX Seniors 59 FACES REFLECT THE EVE® CHANGING MOORS OF SENIORS The moods of students, especially seniors, at Alexander are constantly changing. The face seems to be the place where these unstable emotions make their mark. It’s been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Often it is not difficult to tell what is on one’s mind just by looking at a picture. This seems to be especially true with these pictures from the class of ’76. It's a jar for my magical snake. 62 Seniors Always preparing food. Give me the mirror. I want to see what I look like with my eyes closed. THE SENIORS’ LAST ©AY Bonnie and Clyde As the last day of school arrives - A day many thought would be filled with a twinge of sadness - everyone is too busy either directing or dodging blasts of water to even give a thought to the fact it’s their last day of school. It seems everyone has to get into the act in one way or another as squirt guns begin to appear in the hands of the most unlikely people. Even those mild mannered students who never cause trouble can be seen toting squirt guns or paint bottles from the art room filled with water. By the end of this rather soggy day, it is easy to see that even though many people were drenched some good things came of the day. The seniors forgot to be sad and, well - the deans walked off with some specimens to add to their squirt gun collections. On target. A shot in the eye. There are now three yeart offered. The third year is mostly a practical experience of dissecting and going on field trips. Most everyone who struggles through the first two yeart takes the third year and enjoys it. Biology is just plain good fun. Better watch your fingers! The Vocational Department, made up of home ec., shop, and vo ag. is where you learn the practical things in school. How to make a bookshelf, a pie, and how to make your garden look great. Something for everyone. There are four years in each area to take. So if this is your thing, enjoy. Hope it keeps running! V0C TI(mL Leaming 91 MATH There are all kinds of Math courses offered at Alexander. One year is required, but after that, you’re free. That is if you want to be. If not, believe me, there’s enough for you to choose from. There are two years of algebra, a year of geometry, a year of business math, and for the real brave a year of senior advanced math. They’re really fun??!! Are you sure this is math? It's not that difficult, Susan! Teachers? Leaders? or??? Must study in the hall to get it done. Barnhill.. .Wood. . . Houdasheldt. . .can you guess what this is? History! the place where things and people come back to life?? In Barnhill’s class you’ll learn about the Salem Witch Trials [you won’t sleep for nights]. Wood’s class will be filled with all the Presidents, and modern times. In Houdy’s class you’ll find out how Mexico City got its name. Sound exciting, take the classes and see! HISTORY Leaming 93 Typical senior attitude. • Do you hear anything? The Language department is a very good one. There, of course, is Latin, French, and Spanish. In French and Spanish you learn to speak the languages, you’re able, if you want, to take four years of each one. Latin is an unspoken language now, but that doesn’t mean it’s a waste of time. It helps you a great deal with your English. ENGLISH English is one of the main courses at Alexander. Most of us have it for three years. Then there are those fortunate, who have it for four years. English is now more interesting then it was in the past. Freshmen and Sophomores have to take the basics, but then when you are juniors and seniors there are a variety of courses to take which makes them seem not so bad at all. Group discussion or gossip session? Concentration? ART Probably the most colorful, exciting, and fun place is the art room. There is activity in every corner from painting, perspective, crafts, sculpture, and creation to playing and pushing. There’s a splash of something for everyone to promote appreciation of the beauty of the world in which we live. Practice makes perfect. Must be prepared to play anytime, anywhere. BA1V© The Band class at Alexander meets five times a week, an hour each day. Meeting in the band room consists of woodwind, brass, and percussion sections. The students work on sectionals and sight reading pieces. This class enables some of the students to participate in solo ensembles at Ohio University. Leaming 97 HOME EU'RIVISHI'NG This year from what is observed in the Home Furnishing class, there seems to be much scraping, sanding, and refinishing taking place. Girls and boys alike manage to restore many beautiful pieces of antique furniture. For a large number of students, it is a labor of love. A major result from the class work is the appearance of an article written by Mrs. Tevis and illustrated by Mr. Barnhill in a nationally publicized magazine. A hundred year old chair needs alot of work! Do it right, Phil! FAMILY Good class if you like talking. LIVING During the past year in Family Living the juniors and seniors have learned much about life and living it. Because of the friendly nature of the class we have come to the conclusion that the course name should be changed to “Family Lovin’ Is this what you create in shorthand class? Happy Birthday! TYPING SHOSYHAM) Don't look at the keys! Typing and Shorthand classes at Alexander are very practical courses, that are much fun. Probably the main reason they’re so great is because of our “super” teacher, Mrs. Stroth- er. These classes are very useful, because learned skills are carried over into all other classes. The typing is helpful in classes where reports are required. Shorthand is handy for taking notes. So. . .if you want to have some fun and learn something too, go to room 101 and enjoy! 100 Leaming FHA.. .FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA FRONT ROW: Jeannie Allman, Andria Goldsberry, Christy Allman, Patsy Dearth, Mary Love, Peggy Russ. Those dumb kids missed their cue again and I’m the one who looks silly just sitting here. “THU f £«f£CT IDIOT” You just have to help Puff pass his exams! The high school gang hates the boy-wonder Dan. They despise his Smart me, Dumb-you” attitude. Then the star athlete, Puff, is disqualified from all athletic events and someone has to tutor him. There isn’t anybody to do it but Dan. But Dan has a big problem of his own. His parents won’t let him take the college entrance exams as long as he’s so unpopular in school. So Dan offers a trade: he’ll tutor Puff if the gang will rally around him and act like friends even if they’re not. Reluctantly they agree. Fiery Linda likes the agreement least of all, for she’s detailed to go steady with Dan as long as he tutors Puff. Meanwhile Dan has invented a hypnotic box and with it he’s making Puff into a straight A” student! A big soap manufacturer gets interest- ed in the box. Everything is rolling smoothly for Dan until some wild mishap’s upset the applecart. There are scenes of charming relief - as when Linda teaches Dan exactly how to say goodnight after a date. In the center of the ballroom was a huge Tiki God made of crepe paper and chicken wire with eyes that light up. This is THE JARV! Candids 225 Wat'ch ya cooking? k H V We, the editors of the 1976 Spartan Shield, wish to express our appreciation and thanks to all those who helped make publication of this book possible. First, we would like to thank those who placed ads in our book, without them it would have been impossible to even think about having a yearbook. [Please help us show our appreciation by patronizing these businesses.] A real special thanks goes to our photographers Terry Barnhill and Keith Hare. This yearbook would not be too much to look at if it were not for the work of these two. We would like to thank Mr. Lamborn for his photography work too. Thanks also goes to Mrs. Ball and Mrs. Blickle our advisors for all the work they helped with, for worrying about meeting deadlines, and most of all for keeping us straight. Thanks. Last but not least, we wish to thank our yearbook representative from Shaw-Barton, Mr. John McPeek, who encouraged us to meet our deadlines and was always ready to help if we needed it, and all those behind the scene workers who do not get much credit for the work they do especially for the mistakes they had to correct because one of the editors, and it was not Tammy, was not thinking too clearly when she made up the table of contents and sent it to the company, minus the organization section. 1 J As far as the yearbook is concernedllt’s been a long year filled with mistakes, frustrations, and harjd hours of work trying to meet deadlines. At times we have both felt like giving up. We often wondered if it was really worth all of the hours after school we have spent working on this book. But when the new book arrives and we take the first look at the work we have done, i altogether in one piece instead of in over 400 separate phges, it seems all worthwhile. As the editors we have tried to portray the higHpoints of school life in a way that will bring back memories that sjeem to bje alive. This has been an important year in many ways especially, for the J everyone else. seniors. We hope in years to come as they, an look back at the 1976 annual, they will be able events of this school year as if they happened y that we have succeeded in maki pleasure to it’s readers not only come. remember the rday. We hope this book one that will bring he present but in years to THANKS, EDITORS Autograph Autographs 227 228 Auto graphs “nnrWr K AM csv'%;? f %:; ito «I-MS ?: Autographs 229 230 Auto graphs Autographs 231 i ? 5SS •ai ssfaM !
