To graduate and receive a diploma from the Alexander Central School, a pupil completes the basic requirements of four units of English, three units of Social Studies, one unit of General Science, one unit of Health, a major sequence of three or more units and enough electives to make up the sixteen units. In general, a unit represents the successful completion of a subject which meets five periods a week for one school year. A pupil may receive credit for a course by satisfactorily doing the class work andfor passing the examination at the end of the course. Major fields offered in the Alexander Central School include Agriculture, Art, Industrial Arts, Home Economics, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Language either French or Latin, and Business. As well as the diploma from the Alexander Central School a State or Regents diploma may be earned. The requirements listed above the passing of regents examinations in all subjects where they'are given and specific majors in certain fields such as Business subjects. The courses and the units offered in the different fields are as follows: Agriculture has seven units. Agriculture 1 for one unit and Agriculture 2, 3, h for two units each. In Art we have General Art, Adyanced Art, and Mechanical Drawing for four units. In Industrial Arts we have General Shop, Wood Shop, Metal and Electric Shop for four units. Home Economics 1, 2, 3 for two units and two advanced courses, Advanced Cooking and Advanced Sewing. In Math matics we offer Elementary Algebra, Geometry, Intermediate Algebra, Advanced Algebra, Solid Geometry, and Trigonometry. In the field of Science there is General Science, Earth Science, Health, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. We offer in the field of Foreign Languages three years of French and three years of Latin. In Business we have Introd ction to Business, Business Mathematics, Typing, Shorthand, Transcription, Bookkeeping, Salesmanship an Business Management, and Business Law. In Social Studies the students are required to take Economics History, World History, and American History. Other courses offered are Chorus for one unit, Band for two units, Safe Driving for one-half unit, and Public Speaking for on -half unit. All children in New York State between the ages of 7 and 16 years in proper ph sical and mental condition are required to attend a public, private, or parochial school. A minor who has completed a four year high school course of stud is not required to attend. Children under or over the compulsory age need'not attend if the parents so decide but if they attend school at all, they are subject to the laws and regulations requiring regular attendance. The only legitimate absences permitted under State law are sickness or sickness or death in the family. The State Education Department requires all students to take Physical Education unless excused by written consent of the family physician. As well as courses in Guidance in the 7th and Bth grade required by the State the Guidance Counselor is available for conference with students through all the high school years. Assemblies are considered a part of the regular instructional courses and students are required to attend all regular assemblies. Some of the special assemblies through the school year of 1951-S2 are Keith Elling- wood, Beverage Alcohols, John Dallavaux, Citizenshipg C. E. Jones, Scienceg Marimba Duo, Musica Dan Chase, Good Sportsmanshipg Joel B. Guin, Americanismg the Carroll's, Masques on Parade, Dill Brothers, Archery, George Johnson, Pianist-Humoristg Earl L. Hilfiker, Idaho Pack Trip, the Phylip Young Lees, China, Shooting - Mansfields, Safety with Guns. The Alexander Parent Teacher's Association gives us an opportunity for the parents and teachers to work together in assisting the education of the children and meets the third Tuesday of each month.
