TINY HEROINE — Eighteen -month-old Jessica McClure held on for two and a half days until rescuers freed her from the 22-foot abandoned well in Midland, Texas. FAREWELL FINAL BOW — Fred Astaire, 88, was called the greatest dancer in the world. His innovative, elegant style graced the screen with many partners, including Ginger Rogers and Rita Hayworth. SHOWBIZ —The consummate showman, Liberate, 67, was famous the world over for glitzmg up his concerts with furs, rhinestones and glowing candelabras. As the lights dimmed and the curtains parted, the theme song of Homecoming 1987, Somewhere, Out There, was played by Kristi Nygard. MC Renee Bouth- illier then introduced the candidates and attendants. Soon it was announced that Kathie Brady and Dave Stuart were Homecoming Queen and King. After they were crowned and robed, the classes and organiza- tions presented many entertaining skits. Homecoming activities ended on Friday with the downtown pep rally. The burning of the A was held before the Homecoming football game versus the Irene Cardinals. The Cubs were victorious over the Cardinals with the final score of 14-8. The Homecom- ing victory was celebrated at the dance which ended a Homecoming week that will be remembered for many years to come. Jeremy Solberg gives Calhoun Carlisle a free ride to the trash. Me Tobin welcomes the audience to Sweetheart 1988- She's Like the Wind Father Time (alias Mr. Kroger) makes an appear- ance at AHS. The lights dimmed, the curtains slowly parted and Sweetheart 1988 began. As Kristi Nygard played the theme song She's Like the Wind, MC Tobin DeBondt came on stage to announce the candidates and their escorts: Renee Bouthillier and Jason Johnson, Kate Buum and Mike Embrock, Mi- chelle Hongslo and Joe VanBallegooyen, Jill Lundberg and Dave Stuart, and Lisa Peter- son and Kim Wegner. Tobin opened the en- velope and announced that Kate Buum was the new Sweetheart Queen. Student Body President Mike Embrock crowned the queen and Sarah Nuss-Warren presented her with a box of candy. David Stuart and Jason Johnson played co-hosts for the En- tertainment Tonight skits. The evening was topped off by a dance with music by the KG-95 Hitmen. Mr. Bauer plays “the bad guy in the teachers' skit An Old, old Melodrama. Dr Red Duke delivers a public service announcement about moon- burns. The moment everyone is wait- ing for . Doc St. Pierre and his Tonight Show Band perform at AHS. Joe and Mike work on pumpin' up the crowd Eddie the Eagle Williams tells his fans of his skiing exploits. Live from Alcester High School, it's the Backfield performing their number one hit. Splish Splash. Seniors Told To Never Say Goodbye Karla Schumacher and Renee Bouthillier relate the history of the Class of '88. Senior class president Dave Stuart thanks the juniors for Prom. The theme song Never Say Goodbye set the mood for Prom 1988. The seniors were escorted in by the sophomores and Mr. Hall began the meal by giving the Invo- cation. The class' futures were predicted and the class history was given. The sopho- mores gave out certificates of achieve- ment to each senior for excelling in a cer- tain area. The year's special moments were remembered in a slide show, A duet about friends was sung in honor of the seniors. The music for the dance was provided by Powershift. The musical-comedy, Bye, Bye Birdie, was presented April 15 and 16 by twenty-nine high school stu- dents. After many weeks of hard practices, the cast was able to per- form a very memorable show which was enjoyed by all. Leading men and women were Joe VanBalle- gooyen as Albert, Kate Buum as Ro- sie, Jolene Osterkamp as Kim, and Matt Newberg as Conrad. Directors were Mrs. Horst and Mrs. Connie Lar- sen, with Ginger Waddell and Miss Ites as accompanists. 14 Sweet Apple teens take pledges for Conrad Birdie Telethon??? Class Of '88 Departs With Many Memories ft uie have grown together toward this moment; now we depart as better individuals because of the experiences we've shared The Class of '88 unites as one a final time. The moment the Class of '88 had been building towards for thirteen years arrived on May 29 as the twenty-six class members became alumni. With the stage decorated in the class colors of burgundy and silver, the senior speakers, Salutatori- an Jill Lundberg. Co-Valedictorians Gretchen Lutt- mann and Kim Rogness, and Kristin Seivert, talked of the many memories and events leading up to Com- mencement, along with hopes of the future. Principal Jerry Joachim presented the class as School Board President Jerry Kratochvil awarded the diplomas. As the Class of '88 said their final goodbyes, they knew the memories they have will never fade. The Senior Choir sang Something Special”. We have grown together towards this mo- ment; now, we depart as better individuals because of the experiences we've shared. -Class of '88 Jason Harlow Johnson receives his diplo- ma!!! The Alcester High Student Council, made up of elected representatives from the classes and organizations, worked very hard this year to raise school spirit and pride. The council started a Student of the Week program which recognized outstanding students for various accomplishments. With Mr. Joachim's guidance, the student council members also planned Homecoming Week and Sweetheart activities. The Student Council did a good job of both representing and recognizing AHS students. The National Honor Society, made up of those juniors and seniors with a grade point average of 3.0 and above, was busy raising money for scholarships and graduation honor cords. Through candy sales, the NHS awarded three $100 scholarships to seniors. The group voted on who would receive the scholarships. Selecting pictures, laying out pages, and writing stories are just a few of the many jobs the Cubette staff undertakes in order to com- plete the yearbook. Many people are needed to help make the Cubette a success. Co-edi- tors Gretchen Luttmann and Kim Rogness worked with many seniors and advisor Mr. Hall throughout 1987-1988. With the help and advice of their advisor, Mrs. Wensing, the members individual- ly worked on their declam pieces and pre- pared for contest. The members, competing in three different categories, participated in the Alcester Meet at which three members earned the right to continue on. The annual fruit sales helped them earn money for their various activities throughout the year. Two F.F.A.er's, Joe VanBallegooyen and Ed Wil- liams, attended the national convention in Kansas City, and two judging teams earned the right to participate in the state contest which was held in April. Starting out the year by playing pep band music at games and pep rallies, the band also worked on some serious playing, The concert band performed at three con- certs throughout the year. They attended the region music contest at which three groups brought home l-ratings. They marched at Homecoming and also at the USD parade. The group made appearances at the Veteran's Day and Memorial Day programs and at Graduation. The jazz band performed well at both concerts and con- tests. Robert Kezar The Alcester High School chorus had a very busy year preparing for their concerts, the regional music contest, and the musical, Bye, Bye Birdie. Mrs. Connie Larsen, along with Karen Ites, a student teacher from USD, helped twelve soloists and six vocal groups prepare for the contest held at USD. Several groups brought home superior ratings, along with the Swing Choir which performed a medley called Surfin' USA. Many of the chorus members were also involved in the musical Bye, Bye Birdie which was put on in April. - ♦ 1987-88 was a very productive and fun-filled year for the chorus members and much was accom- plished. Ordering and receiving their class rings, participation in the Homecoming and Sweetheart programs, decorating tables for dances, serving as prom waiters and wait- resses, earning money by working in conces- sion stands and decorating the stage for graduation highlighted the sophomores' schedule. Not only was history made when the team won the Dis- trict 6 Title, but many individual and school records were broken along the way. With a season record of 11-11 and a conference record of 3-4, the girls' hard work really paid off. Besides winning districts, the Cubs also won the Consolation Cham- pionship in the Conference for the third straight year, advanced to re- gions and broke twenty-six old re- cords. All of these added up to an unforgettable year for the coaches, the players and the fans. Leading the team spirit this year were the senior tri-captains Kate Buum, Karla Schumacher and Kristin Seivert, Named to the Tri-Valley All Conference Team was Kristin Sei- vert; Tricia Treiber received Honor- able Mention. The season ended with a re- cord of 4-4, and many records were shattered throughout the football season. Also contributing to the success of the year was the naming of Mike Embrock, Robert Kezar, and Kim Wegner to C'mon Kim, let's do the twist! the all-conference team, with Craig Treiber receiving Honorable Mention. Kim Wegner was also named to the Coaches' Associ- ation All-State team and to the Argus Leaders' Elite-45, to which Mike Embrock was named Honor- able Mention. The Alcester Cubs 1987-1988 basketball team had a very suc- cessful season, finishing with a 15-6 record, including a perfect 7-0 in Tri-Valley Conference play. This was the first time that the Cubs have taken the title. The Cubs placed five squad members on the All-Conference team. Shane takes a moment to figure out his strategy. 57 Volleyball Team Sets Up For A Great Year! The 1987-1988 Cub volleyball team set, bumped, and spiked their way to a successful season. Under the leader- ship of Head Coach Karen Bossman and Assistant Coach Pat Thompson, the Lady Cubs worked very hard dur- ing their practices and matches. The girls constantly learned new skills and improved on old ones. The team was led by four seniors, Michele Hongslo, Patti Jensen, Lisa Pe- terson, and Kristin Seivert. They were joined by four other varsity players and eleven junior varsity players. 1988 was a very fun-filled and suc- cessful year for the Cub volleyball team! Jon St.Pierre was the only trackster to qualify for the State Meet held in Flandreau. Jon ran the 200 meter dash at the meet and he should be very proud of his accomplish- ments. Most valuable player awards were given to Jon St.Pierre, sprinter and most improved; Kim Wegner, field events; and Todd Chance, distance events. Whether it was field events, relays, or dis- tance events, the girls track team excelled during the 1988 season. Coach Bossman led the girls to a second place finish in the Tri-Valley Conference meet. The freshmen girls team placed first in their conference meet. The three senior tracksters, Lisa Peterson, Karla Schumacher, and Kristin Seivert, pro- vided leadership for the younger team members. Most Valuable Player awards were given at the end of the season. Field event MVP was Kristin Seivert; Distance MVP was Karla Schumacher; Tami Dominisse received Sprint MVP and Most Improved. The girls worked very hard in their prac- tices throughout the year, and their efforts paid off as 1988 proved to be a successful year for the Lady Cubs. With the help of Mrs. Burke, the new cheerleading advisor, the cheerleaders had a great year adding pep and spirit to the games. The cheerleaders were very busy making post- ers, leading pep rallies, and sparking the crowd's enthusi- asm for the games. A new way of selecting the cheerleaders was used this year. Senior team. Although the 1987 Cross Country team was small in numbers, that did not stop the members from working hard and doing their best. The five mem- bers, under coach Glenn Kroger, attend- ed eight meets during David Saugstad led the '87 the season. The team brought home a 1st at the Canton meet where Wade was 2nd and Jeff was 4th. They placed 4th at the Al- cester, Baltic and Bon- Homme meets. David Saugstad qualified to advance to regions.
