Activities 6 Homecoming 1986 As 7:30 drew near, the lights dimmed and the audience watched anxiously as the curtains slowly parted to reveal the 1986 Homecoming theme “Dreams”. The spotlight soon shifted from the stage to the doorway as accom- panists Mary Johnson and Renee Pederson softly played the theme song. The master of ceremonies, Jason Fickbohm, then announced the attendants, freshmen Darcie Webster and Jeff Smith; sophomores Julie Torkelson and Jon St. Pierre; juniors Lisa Peter- son and Joe V.B. Below (Left to Right): Vem, played by Karla Schumacher, pleads his case to an unidentified bag lady. The Homecoming activities have affected AHS students in many strange ways. Homecoming Court 1986: (Row 1) Jeff Smith, Jon St. Pierre, Joe V.B., Scott Em- brock, Joshua Hofer, Kama Johnson, Abby Peterson, Lisa Peterson, Julie Torkelson, and Darcie Webster; (Row 2) Jeff Schumacher, Randy Anderton, King Steve Torkelson, Queen Tricia Satter, Angie Havelaar, and Julie Moller. Steve And Tricia Reign Over A Night Of “Dreams” Following the attendants were crown bearers Scott Embrock and Kama Johnson, flower girl Abby Peterson, and envelope bearer Joshua Hofer. The senior candidates were Angie Havelaar and Randy Anderton, Julie Moller and Jeff Schumacher, Tricia Satter and Steve Torkelson. Jason then announced that the 1986 Homecoming King and Queen were Steve Torkelson and Tricia Satter. To entertain the royalty, the classes presented a variety of skits and musical selections. Right: The Backfield (Matt, Chad, Doug, Shane, Mike, and Kim) provide the Queen and her court with some fine musical entertainment. Alcester High Shows Its “True Colors” At Sweetheart As Kristi N. played the theme song, Joe V.B., the M.C. announced the candidates and their escorts: Angie H. and Steve T.; Shari E. and Jamie J.; Julie M. and Shane C.; Marie S. and Gavin C.; and Margaret L. and Randy A. Joe then announced, “The 1987 Sweetheart Queen is Angie Havelaar!” Jason F. crowned the new queen, and Kristen Peterson presented her with a box of candy. Everyone was then entertained by various skits and musical selections. The program ended with Renee P. singing the theme song, followed by a dance with the music by “Hitmenn”. 8 Angie Reigns As AHS Queen Top Left: Shari Erickson congratulates Queen Angie. In The Air Tonight As the 1987 Jr.-Sr. Prom theme, “In the Air Tonight,” was being played, the seniors were escorted into the banquet by the sophomores. After the welcome and response, Central Cater- ing served the meal. The class history was given and futures predicted. A slide show and music provided entertainment. The lead parts were played by Renee Bouthillier and Joe VanBallegooyen. Other cast members included R. Pederson, M. Lind, S. Lappegard, J. Moller, T. Satter, L. Peterson, T. DeBondt, M. Hongslo, K. Schumacher, D. Stuart, B. Kezar, M. Embrock, J. St. Pierre, M. Newberg, T. Long, and C. Treiber. The lights were run by Lisa Ronning and Paula Wiberg. The play was under Mrs. Anne Petersen’s direction. 13 Student Life Shane, what are you looking at? Do you have these attacks often, Wade? Who stole that car? Organizations 9 8 Getting The Job Done Under the guidance of Mr. Joachim, the student coun- cil worked hard to reach their goals. The long awaited pop machine finally arrived thanks to the efforts of the members. Along with working on Homecoming and Sweetheart, they also succeeded in boosting school spirit and pride. To contribute to the community, they donated money to the Senior Citizen’s Thanksgiving dinner and to the pool fund. The student council should be commended for all of their efforts this year. The twenty-two members of the National Honor Society, under the supervision of Mr. Zingler, were kept busy early in the year by selling candy bars. The money raised was used for scholarships and honor cords for the seniors. GAL Club The GAL Club, which is made up of female letter win- ners, had another successful year under their advisor, Miss Karen Boss man. The girls worked hard to raise money through conces- sion stands and other fundraisers. A-Club The A-Club is made up of the male letter winners. Mr. Mike Seivert was their marvelous leader this year. The boys spent the year raising money through work in con- cession stands. 17 FHA Raises Money The FHA Project this year was “Building A Better Alcester” and the girls were very busy with many pro- jects. They earned enough money to donate over $1000 to the swimming pool fund. Some of the other major pro- jects included the Hoop Shoot Contest and the FHA Carnival. The FHA held its annual ice cream social for eighth graders and its member picnic at Newton Hills. They also held the Dad’s Night Out Banquet and the Mother-Member Banquet. FFA Shows Strength This year the Alcester FFA chapter raised a lot of money for the swimming pool renovation and for many other improvements around Alcester. Bottom Right: Joe, who helped you with your make-up today? 28 Vv Classes 1 19 8 7 Class Of 87 Unite As One For Final Time! On May 31, 1987, excitement, happiness, and even sadness filled the Alcester Gym, as the class of 1987 joined together for the last time. After the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” by the band, Rev. Doug Olson opened with an invocation followed by a hymn led by Alan Hall. The rest of the program consisted of music and speeches. The Swing Choir sang “Friends” and the seniors sang “A Closing Prayer.” The class of thirty students left the gym as thirty individuals ready to go their separate ways. T T f f f rf r i i; Memories were then expressed by class members through their thoughts, with words and poetry. The valedictorian address was given by Kirsten Anderson and the salutatorian address was given by Anthony Anderson. The senior class also presented Marie Solheim with an engraved picture of the class. The ivory rose was the class flower and royal blue and ivory were the class colors. Cubs Make Playoffs And Tie For Second In Conference! With the experience of 7 seniors behind them, the Cubs recorded a 5-4 record for the season. The team worked hard and brought down eleven former team records. The team was proud to say that they were only the second team in Alcester history to make the state playoffs. The three people chosen to the All-Conference team were Jason Fickbohm, Steve Torkelson, and Chad Wells. Honorable Mention went to Doug Medema and Kim Wegner. Chad Wells was also named All-State honorable mention. The team was coached by Jerry Joachim and Mike Seivert. The team also won the KDLT team of the week award for beating Irene. 51 Cubs Pride Shines Through On Aug. 21, twenty girls showed up for their first practice of a brand new year with brand new coaches. The new head coach was Mr. Bill Koenig and he was assisted by Karen Bossman. They finished the season with a 10-12 record. The team also broke many team and individual records this year. One of the records they set was the most 20 match winners in one season, set by Jared St. Pierre, David Saugstad, and Jason Fickbohm. Volleyball: A New Tradition This year marked the beginning of a new sport at AHS, and even though volleyball was new to everyone, the Cubs had a good season finishing with 4 wins and 11 losses.
