FRONT ROW (L to R): Bounthiene Moumy, Nathan Solberg, Kevin Jacob, Robbie Heiman, Kathryn Treiber, Paula Evanson, Jennifer Nelson, Angie Moore ROW 2 (L to R) Chad Wells, Dwight Gubbrud, Mike Schumacher, Todd Wells, Jill Abraham, Mary Weyen, Angie Brickhouse, Julie Moller The lights dimmed, and the audience hushed as the curtain slowly opened to reveal the stage beautifully decorated by Mr. Carlson and his art classes. The accompanist, Melanie Ronning, softly played the theme song, “Ribbon In the Sky”, as Curt Geveshausen, the Master of Ceremonies, announced the Homecoming candidates and attendants for 1983. Freshman attendants were Julie Moller and Chad Wells; sophomore attendants were Angie Brickhouse and Dwight Gubbrud; and junior attendants were Mary Weyen and Mike Schumacher. Preceding the candidates were Bounthiene Moumy, Nathan Solberg, Angie Moore, and Jennifer Nelson, who were the flower, envelope and crown bearers. The spotlight was then focused on the candidates. They were Jill Abraham and Kevin Jacob; Paula Evanson and Robbie Heiman; and Kathryn Treiber and Todd Wells. As the excitement rose, Curt opened the envelope and revealed that Jill and Todd were the 1983 Homecoming Queen and King. They were robed and crowned by the 1982 King and Queen, Shane McClara and Teresa Limoges. The royalty and the audience were entertained as the various classes and organizations performed a number of skits. Solos were sung by Ross Abraham and Gayle Van Wyk; Carl Treiber and Melanie Ronning sang a duet, and Landra Allen sang the theme song. After the coronation there was the traditional pep rally and bonfire. Did you forget your anti-perspirant, Curt? 6 Above - I can’t believe it! Above - Ha, Ha, Ha! Cubs always had it, always will! As the curtain opened, Lisa Holt played the theme song, and Curt Geveshausen introduced the candidates for the Sweetheart Queen. They were Mary Beth Newberg escorted by Todd Wells, Kathryn Treiber escorted by Tom McKee, Susan Hagen escorted by Todd Embrock, Paula Evanson escorted by Robbie Heiman, and Melanie Ronning escorted by Kevin Jacob. Curt slowly opened the envelope and announced that Melanie Ronning was the 1984 Sweetheart Queen. She was crowned by Robbie Heiman and then presented with candy by Helen Schumacher. The program continued as Curt Geveshausen, the “Wolfman”, and Tina Vanderham “Annie Lennox”, hosted Alcester’s version of “Solid Gold”. Solos were sung by Carl Treiber and Gayle Van Wyk, and Tracy Nelson and Brian Treiber sang a duet. The theme song was sung by Landra Allen and Ross Abraham, and many humorous skits were done by the classes. The highlight of the evening was when our own “Van Halen” appeared to perform the 1984 song of the year, “Jump”. Overall the evening was a big success, and the annual Sweetheart Dance followed the coronation. Gayle Sings “Almost Over You” 10 - Wolfman and Annie Lennoz co-host Gold. Above - What’s the matter? The junior class presented the seniors with a lovely prom on Sat., May 12 at 6:30 p.m. The seniors were individually escorted to their seats by the sophomore waiters and waitresses. Tamra Tucker, the junior class president welcomed everyone, and the FFA student teacher, Jim Nelson, sang the invocation. After a delicious meal, Kevin Jacob and Curt Geveshausen presented a very interesting class history. Mary Wyen and Carl Treiber then read a humorous class prophecy, followed by the waiters and waitresses singing “Candle on the Water” and “Come Sail Away”. Audiophile provided music for the dance which was from 9:00-12:00. At 12:45, we watched either “An American Werewolf in London” or “Mr. Mom” and the breakfast was served from 3:00-4:00. This year, along with their class advisor, Mr. Vissia, they chose announcements and planned graduation and their senior trip. On May 4, they traveled to Kansas City for Grad Night at Worlds of Fun. At graduation they united as one for the final time and left with many special memories and much hope for an exciting future. (L-R) Vice pres.-T. Wells, Pres.-K. Jacob, Treas.-P. Evanson, Sec.-M. Ronning 14 18 May 23 saw the senior class depart from the Alcester school system as the newest alumni. The motto they chose was “I cannot change yesterday, I can only make the most of today and look with hope toward tomorrow.” The class chose light blue and ivory as their colors, and an ivory rose tied with a light blue ribbon as their class flower. The baccalaureate service was held on May 20 with Charles Peterson officiating. The mixed chorus sang “Closing Prayer”, and soloist, Marcia Van Camp, sang “Friends.” At commencement, Robbie Heiman gave the salutatory address, and Paula Evanson and Melanie Ronning were co-valedictorians. Four seniors also gave speeches, as the class chose not to have a guest speaker. Graduation was made even more special when slides were shown during the senior song “Times of Your Life.” The 25 class members received their diplomas and departed in awe of actually being alumni. AHS students, under the direction of Larry Vissia, pooled their talents to present the all-school play, “Get Smart”. The play had a fast paced plot revolving around the clumsy antics of Maxwell Smart, played by Robbie Heiman. Smart was called upon by the organization of good, called Control, to save the world from KAOS, the organization of evil. KAOS was scheming to blow up Washington, D.C. with professor Dante’s inthermo. Needless to say, Smart came through again and saved the world from evil. The students time and talent combined to make this year's play a fun experience for everyone involved and a big success at AHS. Above - Professor Dante tries to explain the inthermo to Smart. The GAL Club continued the sale of stadium cushions to help defray the cost of the locker room hairdryers, under their advisor, Mrs. Johannsen. The A-Club, under Mr. Joachim’s supervision, held meetings during the year to discuss their activities. The members also combined to have an evening of fun at the rollerskating rink in Sioux Falls. The main activity of the chapter is to raise money for scholarships which are given to three senior members. They again sold candy this year to raise money, with the top salesman receiving a hundred dollar scholarship. This year’s top candy salesman was Susan Hagen. Others receiving scholarships were Mary Beth Newberg, Todd Embrock, Robbie Heiman, and Jill Abraham was the alternate. Mr. Zingler was the chapter’s advisor. Above - NHS Officers (L-R) Sec.-P. Each sporting event was worth a certain number of points toward a member’s pin is they attended. This helped to bring attendance up, and the spectators had an added incentive to cheer the team on to victory. The cheerleaders really appreciated having such an enthusiastic crowd to work with. Mrs. Johannsen guided them throughout the year by serving as the Pep Club’s advisor. Above - Student Librarian M. B. Newberg LIBRARIAN ASSISTS STUDENTS This year there was only one student librarian, Mary Beth Newberg, to help Mrs. McKellips locate books and magazines for students during their study halls. Some of their activities were: National FFA Convention, State FFA Convention, State FFA Leadership Camp, Parent-Member Banquet, and to do some repair work on the Union County Fair Grounds. Erik Johnson, President, did an outstanding job of leading our chapter to a very successful year. The chapter placed very well in all the state activities that it participated in. All these activities were led by the local officers and their advisor, Mr. Quick. Above - FFA Members (Bottom L-R) K. Johnson, C. Nygard, S. Peck, B. Johnson, C. Treiber, C. Johnson, T. This year the FHA promoted the theme “Families and Futures.” Two of the biggest events FHA held were Daddy Date Night and the Mother-Daughter Banquet. They both were a big success. Many of the members went to the regional meeting and did very well. Fourteen members from Alcester went on to the state meeting. Another highlight of this year was FHA week. The week was filled with many activities in which the members participated in. Jeff Schumacher is awarded “AHS Mr., Valentine” by Mrs. Larsen and M. B. Newberg FHA Members (Bottom L-R) T. Tucker, M. As the editor of the 1984 Cubette I have learned more that I can express. It wasn’t very easy to take over as senior editor since we started with a little more than $1000 in the hole. However, I feel thankful for that. It taught me to work hard for what I want. I didn’t do all this work alone: lots of people helped me and deserve a pat on the back. First of all, I would like to thank the AHS administration and school board for setting guidelines. They set the Cubette on fire to get enough money to have a yearbook. I would like to thank our advisor, Mr. Hall, for being so patient with us and encouraging us. Mr. Larsen, our school photographer, also deserves a very big pat on the back. He worked with us in a very pleasant manner, even during his summer vacation. It wouldn’t have been possible without him. Thanks to Erik Johnson and Todd Embrock. who weren’t on the staff, but willingly helped. I would also like to thank the rest of the Cubette Staff. Last but not least, I have one person who deserves a very special thanks. That person is Paula Evanson, my assistant editor. Besides myself, Paula worked the hardest and longest on this book. She was always there to help me and encourage me. Thanks so very much, Paula! They spent many hot days practicing for their halftime show and the parades that they would attend. The work and sweat was all made worthwhile when they got fourth place at the USD Dakota Days Parade and a third place trophy at the Tulip Festival in Orange City, Iowa. During the year the students attended the Augustana Band Festival, tried out for All-State Band, and took many ensembles and solos to contest in Vermillion. The jazz band also performed well this year. They attended a jazz contest and had their annual concert together with the swing choir. To end the year, the band used their money they earned selling pizzas to take a trip. They journeyed to Omaha, and, after enjoying themselves all day, performed at an Omaha Royals game.
