THE 1981 CUBETTE Photographs And Memories ALCESTER HIGH SCHOOL ALCESTER, SOUTH DAKOTA VOLUME 33 Editor Susan Heiman Ad Sales Carol Jensen Copy Ed LeAnne Lingert Bus. Mgr. Barb Ekanger Layout Ed Diane Ludwig Head Typist Heidi Hughes In Memory Of Kevin Peterson We, the Seniors, dedicate our annual to the memory of Kevin Lee Peterson who was killed in a car accident on May 26, 1980. He was a member of the 1980 graduating class and a friend to all of us. His parents have given the school a memorial award in his memory to be given to an outstanding student in the field of mechanics. This award will be granted annually to a graduating Senior. Kevin was known by his friends as a person you could always trust and depent on. He always had a smile on his face and a friendly word for everyone. His memory will live on in our hearts forever. You cannot say-you must not say That he is dead-He is just Away With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand, He has wandered into an unknown Land. And left us dreaming how very fair It must be, since he lingers there So think of him faring on as dear. In the love of there as the love of here. Think of him still as the same, and say. He is not dead, he is just away. (Riley) 2 Chris Embrock And Susan Heiman Reign Over Homecoming 'SO The lights dimmed, the people became silent, and the curtains opened. Homecoming 1980 was here. Master of Ceremonies Scott Livingston came on stage and accompianist Tara Sonichson began softly playing the theme song “Sailing”. Attention was then drawn to the right doorway as Freshman attendants, Paula Evanson escorted by Robbie Heiman, were announced. The Sophomore atten- dants, Lisa Klienhans escorted by Randy Honglso, came next. Following them were the Junior atten- dants, Shelley Hartman escorted by Kevin Kroger. The crown bearers then marched in. These first graders were Kimberly Keiser and Shane Talbott. Sonja Lerseth and Lance Allen were the second graders who carried in the Queen’s bouquet of yellow roses and the all-im- portant envelope. The spotlight was then focused on the senior King and Queen candidates: Jolynne Crawford es- corted by Chris Embrock, Nancy Bergdale escort- ed by Kent Anderson, and Susan Heiman escorted by Mark Fickbohm. Flashbulbs popped and everyone watched as they gathered on stage. Scott Livingston then took the envelope, grabbed the microphone, and an- nounced, “The 1980 Homecoming King and Queen are Chris Embrock and Susan Heiman!” 1 hey were crowned and robed by last year’s King ana Queen, Jaimey Schempp and Erin Lusk. Quee Susan was then given the bouquet of roses from Scnja Lerseth. Skits ai d solos were then performed as the coro- nation got nderway. The traditional bonfire was held afterwa i with Scott Kruse and Kent Ander- son giving the; own personal pep talks. The Homecoming game against Centervill was won 25- 8 and everyone danced to the sounds of “Party” afterwards. This Homecoming came and went, just like all the rest, yet there’s something special about this one that every Senior will remember It was just for them. The librarians established among themselves the study hall periods that they would be assigned as librarians. The librarians were advised by Mrs. McKellips. One of the main fund-raisers was a Sadie-Haw- kins Dance held in the fall. The staff, led by Susan Heiman and advised by Mr. Alan Hall, put in many long hours in the hopes that this book will recapture those special “Photographs and Memories” of that special year. .1981. You otten think only of athletes when you hear of sports, but behind every athlete is a cheering crowd. The cheerleaders worked hard to keep the Alcester crowd backing the Cubs with enthusiasm. In spite of their effort, the cheerleaders could have not done it without the support of the Pep Club. The Pep Club made posters and a mascot to help create an enthusias- tic crowd. This class will leave many impressions on those that they have come in touch with through the years. Many memories were created this year which re- main as symbols of the class of 1981. They did many things together as a class such as travelling to Minneapolis early one morning in May. They visited the zoo, the Southdale mall, IDS Building, and watched the Minnesota Twins play Cleveland. A car semi wash was also held to provide funds for graduation flowers. On May 28 though, the class of 1981 no longer existed. This was a sad moment as it was realized that their high school years had come to an end, hut it was also a new beginning. Senior Play One Year To Go! The Junior class had a year full of activity un- der the leadership of their President Ken Keiser, Vice Pres. Rochelle Twedt, Secretary Shelley Hartman and Treasurer Tara Sonichson. Kevin Kroger and Shelley Hartman were their choices for Homecoming attendants. They elected Rhonda Newberg, Wayne Johnson, and Jon Leaf- stedt to represent them in Student Council. Dur- ing the year, they took an active part in providing songs and skits for Homecoming and Sweethearts coronations. Later in the year they provided the Seniors with a beautiful Prom. The Seniors elect- ed four Juniors for Honor Guards for Graduation. They were: Kevin Kroger, Rochelle Twedt, Ken Keiser, and Shelley Hartman. They enjoyed their Junior year but are looking forward to becoming the next Senior class at AHS! Opposite Page (First Row) Dick Anderson, Tim Anderton. Robbie Heiman and Paula Evanson represent- ed the Freshman class in the Student Council. The Homecoming attendants they chose were also Robbie Heiman and Paula Evanson. Their advisor, Mr. Quick, helped the class of 1984 through their First year of school. Robbie Heiman and Paula Evanson take a stroll dur- ing Homecoming as they were Freshman atten- dants. Junior High Keeps Busy Besides their regular classes, the junior high stu- dents were involved in many other activities. For the First time all the girls had an opportunity to develop their cheerleading techniques. They took turns cheering for all of the junior high games. Many of the seventh and eighth graders also par- ticipated in chorus, band, art, and sports activities. Along with these activities the junior high stu- dents also had the challenge of getting used to their new surroundings at the high school. The junior high was also fortunate to have two Laotian girls in their classes. Patty Limoges and Lisa Holt were honored as outstanding students for helping Kitsana and Phouphanit Teso to ad- just to Alcester school life. Seventh Grade Below Kitsana and Phouphanit Teso came to Alcester from Laos. Besides the fundamentals which were ably taught in the Kindergarten through sixth grades classrooms, there were additional enrichment ac- tivities of physical education, art, and music. Many students were also involved in pen pal pro- jects and wrote to pen pals in other states. For a second year they participated in the Weekly Read- er balloon launch, attaching their names and ad- dresses to their balloons and looking forward to hearing from people who might find their names and get in touch with them. All grades were involved in several musical con certs during the year, and 5th and 6th graders had the opportunity to play basketball and to wrestle during half time of several high school varsity sports events.
