“These Are The Times Of Our Lives’' THE 1978 CUBETTE Alcester High School Alcester, South Dakota Editor—Ruth Hultgren Jr. Eds.—Charlotte Leafstedt Audrey VanBallegooyen Layout Ed.—Dianna Crawford Bus. Manager—Gail Jacob Copy Editor—Kristi Lingert Typing Editor—Trudy Holtkamp Photographer—Mary Ann Dunlap In Memory DUANE ONNEN April 18, 1963-July 5, 1977 WHEN MY TIME HAS COME by Marie Knott When my time has come, and my spirit is free. Just to roam the universe would be heaven for me. I'd ride the white waters, go to the core of the earth, Learn the great mystery of this planet's birth. I'd seek all the places no man has ever seen, Follow the course of a small hidden stream, Climb the highest mountain, probe the depths of the sea, Stroll through the forests, wander over meadow and lea. I'd speak with the animals, fly with birds on the wing, Soar to the stars, see many strange things. When my time has come, and my spirit is free, To do all these things would be heaven for me. rri ACTIVITIES Clockwise From Right to Left: Todd Merrick gets a surprise. Autumn Odyssey Highlights Homecoming Left: Shell! Newberg and Charlotte Leafttedt teach ut tome new old cheers. Right: Mary Ann Dunlap boosts our Homecoming spirit at the bonfire. The Homecoming Festivities of 1977 began with curtains rising to Autumn , played by Audrey Van Ballegooyen. The master of ceremonies, Todd Merrick, then intro- duced the attendants and our new king and queen, Ed and Dianna. The royalty and audience then were entertained by various skits and musical numbers. The bonfire was held outside, between showers of rain. Friday evening, the Cubs hosted the Tri-Valley Mustangs in a victorious football game of 26-6, the Cubs leading the entire game. The Homecoming dance was then held in the gym. Music was provided by Main Street . All tied together, this Home- coming weekend proved successful and was enjoyed by all. Edge Of The Universe Sparkles In “78” Excitement built as the lights went out, the spot- light was flicked on, and Charlotte Leafstedt, Wanda Onnen, and Audrey Van- Ballegooyen sang the theme song Edge of the Universe , accompanied by Audrey on the guitar and Kay Lapour on the piano. Master of Ceremonies, Ed McNeill, announced the candidates and their es- courts, Cherie Sorlie, escorted by Tony McNeill; Gail Jacob, escorted by John Bergdale; Ruth Hult- gren, escorted by Lars Kjerstadius; and Rhonda Ryken, escorted by Paul Twedt. Excitement reached a climax as Ed opened the envelope and announced the 1978 Sweetheart Queen, Gail Jacob. She was crown crowned by 1977 Sweetheart Queen, Shirley Johnson and was presented with a box of candy by Kristi Limoges. Then Queen Gail sat on her throne amidst a galaxie of streamers and stars. She and her court were entertained with skits by various classes and organi- zations. The ole' time favorite band, The Outer Limits, returned to provide music for the dance following the Coronation. 12 The Juniors And Seniors Are ‘Absolutely Murder” The curtains dropped and the tension rose as the Juniors and Seniors combined to perform Absolutely Murder , on March 17. Fourteen actors and actresses parti- cipated, plus an active stage crew. Dead bodies walked, as a knife murderer stalked the living. There was plenty of action, and the production proved excellent. Above, Below, and Right, Scenes and Actors from year's productions. The second year of the new drama department surprised us all with only eight students participating. Despite their lack of numbers, the class was quite suc- cessful. Through hard work and a few kicks from Mrs. Rozell, 3 one-act plays and a single 3 act play were presented. The Birthmark, The Minister’s Black Veil and David Swan were attempted in the fall. Our Gal Sal gave a final touch of finesse, with eight people playing nine parts. Although this was a handicap, the class pulled through. The experience of acting and a knowledge of the hard work involved gave an education to all. Cheerleaders And Pep Club Create Enthusiasm You often think only of athletes when you hear of sports, but behind every athlete is a cheering crowd. National Honor Society, and the Librarians made up three important groups in school life. The Student Council, under the fine direction of John Bergdale and Mr. Zingler and Mr. Wurtz, sponsored a 50's Day and Dance and contributed money to the Cubette and football grandstand fund. The National Honor Society, advised by Mr. Wurtz and Mr. Zingler. sold popcorn to build up their scholarship fund. Bryan and Dianna Crawford were awarded these scholarships. The Librarians were led by President Mary Ann Dunlap, Vice President, Sheryl Gabel. Secretary Heidi Hughes, and Treasurer Nancy Bergdale. They worked hard during the year keeping the library y in order and by assisting students in finding reference materials. They were advised by Brenda Pfeiffer. Creative Writing was a Senior Class that provided the town with the events surrounding school activities. The Bear Facts came out in print once a month for all to read and enjoy. This newspaper publication featured a front page, an editorial column for various students to let their thoughts be known, senior interviews, and a sports page, that covered each individual sports event. The Cubette, our annual, was created by students from freshman through seniors. Officers were elected to head the various departments. Everyone worked hard to take pictures, write stories, and meet deadlines. The publications of a school are most schools' pride and joy. Ours is no exception. c u Below: Where's that picture! t t 20 The Bear Facts staff- front to back: Advisor- Mr. Hall, Ruth Hultgren, Dianna Zingler, Tony McNeill, Tom Zingler, Ed McNeill, Bergdale, Jeff Hall, Patti McKee, Cherie Scrlie, Kay Danielson, Rhonda Ryken, Wendy Schempp, Trudy Holtkamp, Rodd Hakl, Kriai Lingert, Bryan Crawford, Randy Ronning, Adrian Ludwig, Mike Lappegard, Randy Schoellerman, Wanda Onnen.
