Rhonda Twedt then began to play the theme song, “Nadia’s Theme,” as Mary Jane Anderson accompanied on the flute. John Bcrgdale, Master of Ceremonies, began to introduce the 1977 Sweetheart Candidates and their escorts: Serena Barnes, escorted by Brad Kleinhans, Laura Hendricks, escorted by Darrell Warner, Lori Hongslo, escorted by Gene Johnson, Shirley Johnson, escorted by Warren Johnson, and Rhonda Thompson, escorted by Jarvis Peterson. The envelope was then opened by John, and the 1976 Sweetheart Queen, Charmain Hagen, then crowned Shirley Johnson, as the 1977 Sweetheart Queen. After being crowned. Queen Shirley was presented a box of candy by Jacqueline VonWald and a bouquet of red roses by Student Body President, Evelynn Dunlap. Then the classes and organizations presented a program consisting of songs and skits. The night was then wrapped up with the “Outer Limits” playing for the dance. 15 A Dramatic Beginning This year the Juniors and Seniors were offered a one semester class known as Drama. These students studied and learned the backstage and on stage moves that go on during plays. They presented a series of one-act plays written by Edgar Allen Poe. They did “The Black Cat , “Murder of Rue Morgue and “Fall of the House of Usher . The students broadened their knowledge and took on the task of a 3 act comedy, “Everybody's Getting Married. Under the direction of Mrs. JoAnn Rozell, the Drama Class gained valuable experience. Wanda Onnen applies make-up on Heather Lusk before curtain time. 1st Row: Brian Steeneck. For the past school year 17 students and teacher, Mr. Alan Hall, have brought to the public the new school paper, called “The Bear Facts”. The students have worked hard on the stories, which they wrote for the paper, but this was not all the class did! They also learned how to write creatively in order to capture attention and hold interest. This has been a great year for the class and has given those students interests in a writing career and a chance to become involved. Laura Hendricks and Evelynn Dunlap work together to meet the deadline for the next edition of “The Bear Facts”. 1st Row Lori Hongslo, June Grage. Evelynn Dunlap, Scott Lusk. People helping to achieve this goal were Editor-Laura Hendricks, Co-Editor-Ruth Hultgren, Copy Editor-Rhonda Thompson, Business Manager-Pam Johnson, Photographer-Mary Ann Dunlap, and all the salesmen and reporters. Also, our advisor Mr. Hall helped them make their deadlines. Department Heads: Head Typist-Evelynn Dunlap, Co-Ed- Ruth Hultgren. Bus. Mgr-Pam Johnson. Head Photo- Mary Ann Dunlap. Ruth Hultgren Clubs and Organizations Add Interest Three types of organization, a specialized group, a language group, and a scholarly group, have helped AHS students channel their interests and abilities. The specialized group could be called the student council. The Student Council is special because each representative represents some organization or class. This year's Student Council under the capable direction of President Evelynn Dunlap, did a fine job of representation. The Student Council provided the Homecoming and Sweetheart bands, sold concessions, and purchased a stereo for the Study Hall. At Christmas time they provided a movie and candy for the Student Body. This group consisted of 15 juniors and seniors having maintained a minimum grade point average of 3.00. Under Brad Kleinhans, the President, the National Honor Society had a pie sale and served many nights in the concession stand, to contribute to a scholarship fund. This year's advisors for Student Council and National Honor Society were Mr. Wurtz and Mr. Zigler. The language group is the German Club. This group consisted of Monica Clark, Kay Danielson and Janet Vreugdenhil. They held regular meetings the last Wednesday of every month, under supervision of their advisor, Mr. Delmar Schnabel. In addition to these three clubs we include the Librarians Club This Club was led by President Michelle Gross, Vice President Pam Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer, Audrey Van Ballagooyen, and advisor Mrs. Diane Hanson. There were 15 librarians who worked through the year to serve as librarian and earn a library pin. Those who served as librarians during their four years in school received a special medal. These four organizations and special groups did a fine job of serving our school, participating in activities, and benefitting the school and themselves through their activities. Beloh. Seniors Have “Worlds of Fun” in Kansas City The 33 members of the “Class of 77” and advisor Mr. Hall were proud to announce their graduation on May 27, 1977, but before they reached that destiny many things had to be done. One of their first class meetings they decided to take their class trip to Kansas City's “Worlds of Fun , but one thing held them back. . MONEY! That didn't stop them, so they had a Turkey Raffle, Bake Sales, Pie Sale. Dance and ran some concession stands. Finally that long destiny was reached, and they were proud that they had made it. When they had the money they relaxed a bit, but then they had to order Graduation Announcements, picking a theme, class flowers, and class colors. That's all behind them now, but they all will remember the busy schedules, being the upperclassmen, making money, loads of tests, taking Senior pictures, and picking announcements, but above all the night of graduation, which was the last time the “Class of 77“ was together as a class. They were required to take English I, Physical Sci.,and PE. but they did have a choice between Algebra I or Gen. Math. If they could find some spare time, they could take in extra-curricular activities. Besides these requirements they did have some responsibilities. In their class meetings they found out it was probably the only place for the word Freedom. These class meetings were conducted by Pres. Joel Hagen, Vice President Paul Buum, Secretary Sandy Green, and Trcasurer Joni Johnson with helpful advice given by Advisor, Mr. Joachim. They also had a voice in Student Council, with Erin Lusk and Jamie Schempp speaking for their class. Faculty Adds Distinct Personalities Around AHS this year we, the faculty, have had many new adjustments to make, such as learning students' names, and becoming friendly with these same students, in addition to working with each other. We gained Mr David Larsen, Mrs. Dianne Hansen to the high school faculty to help us in the Music and Library departments respectively. In addition to these new faces, we have seen much more of Mrs. JoAnn Rozell, who became a classroom teacher along with her athletic duties. I guess we’ve all had our days, but totally I think the year was successful. Standards were set, goals accomplished, and as far as I know, everybody got their Lesson Plans handed in. With this in mind, I believe I’m in a position to say, “We've had a very good year! . Top Row, From Left. Delmar Schnabel. Math and German; Jerry Joachim, English; Robert Carlson.
