Band members also took part in perform- ing in a Christmas concert on December 10, Spring Concert on April 19, and the Pops Concert on May 10. Each FHA member adopted a grandmother. The girls helped their adopted grandmothers individually throughout the years by helping her, running errands, or by just visiting with her. FHA ers also cooperated with the FFA in a paper drive. The girls raised money for their organization by selling concessions at football games. A white elephant silent auction was held to make money for the scholarship fund. Dakota Tells the News Each month news of Alcester High School activities was published in the school paper, the DAKOTA. A student staff consisting of editors, art editors, feature editors, sports editors, typists, and a production manager worked hard to get the publication out on time. The DAKOTA included coverage of special events and meetings, sports stories, editorials, interviews, and a little humor. Randy Medema, editor, assisted by Becky Cooper and Mr. Melvin Ptak, advisor, had the task of getting the paper out at the end of each month. Each month reporters checked the beat sheet” to see what stories they had to write. Once these stories were turned in typists typed the rough drafts so that the editors could plan out the pages. These pages had to be typed on stencils. From here art editors took care of headlines and drew in original sketches. Feature editors were responsible for feature pages which included such articles as senior interviews, coming events, and the school grapevine. Sports editors took care of Cub's corner and some sports stories. A production editor had the final job of running off all the pages. Jr. Varsity Gain Experience The junior varsity football team consisted of an equal number of freshmen and sopho- mores. They gained valuable experience as they played together throughout their seven- game season. The team’s record was 1-6 with many close games. The final game was a convincing 26-12 victory. In that game against Lennox, the young Cubs scored with ease. The B-basketball team began the season with high hopes. Due to lack of experience, it took awhile for the team to get going, but as the year progressed the self-confidence and skills of the players improved; and, they racked up an 8-10 record. The team consisted of seven sophomores and five freshman. None of these players had ever played in a varsity or B-team game because of the old policy of past years only allowed sophomores and juniors on the B-team. Both the junior varsity football and B-basketball teams were coached by Mr. Joachim. The New School Students at Alcester from kinder- garten through the 6th grade have the privilege of attending classes in a new building this year. The open class concept is classes with only moveable partitions, bulletin boards, tables, etc. to divide the rooms. The kindergarten is separated by a move- able folding wall. The library is the center area of the open classroom. All students join in the library area each morning for announce- ments, flag pledge and each month a new patriotic song is learned. At various times during the day during reading, science, or if certain teachers exchange classes for teaching something specific to another group as they do in Social Studies and other classes, the students go to dif- ferent areas. Some students are also allowed in the library area for study. Several high school students serve as cross-age peer helpers and four teachers' aids also assist. The students have hot lunch served in the commons at noon. It is brought over to the grade school from the high school. The grade stu- dents also have use of the new gym and locker facilities for their P.E. program.
