During the year some of the members went to the Kansas City Convention, a livestock judging contest at Sioux Falls, a convention and judging contest at Brookings and a crop and weed seed judging contest. Some of the work shop projects were hay racks, wagon boxes, feed bunks, picnic tables and chairs, hog brooders, trailers, motor overhauling and machinery repair. Each boy that studies agriculture is required to complete at least one livestock or grain project. This gives the individual real experience in farming. The Alcester football squad had a good season for the year 1949- Four victories, two losses and one tie was marked down in the records. Opening the season, the Alcester Six traveled to Ireton and encountered a stronger and more ex- perienced team. Ireton took the win but the Cubs played very good ball considering they had but three scrimmages previously. The Cubs then traveled to Salem and met the St. Mary’s team on the gridiron there. Both teams were tough and equally matched; thus, the game ended in a tie. The next encounter marked the initial home game of the season. The Wakonda Six were the guests and proved to be more experienced as they grabbed a conference win from the Blue and Gold. Viborg played host to the Alcester Cubs and bowed before them for Alcester s first win. The Cubs then became determined to win another conference game and in so doing they defeated the Irene Six in the Homecoming encounter. Gayville fell before the Alcester Griders on latter’s gridiron and this victory marked the Cubs third win in succession. The last game of the season also proved victorious to the Cubs as they over- powered the Hudson squad. Gene Larson and Wayne Warner were selected as Alcester’s All-Stars for the All-Conference football “A team. The Cub squad loses four boys by graduation, namely: Gene Larson, Don Nolan, Vern Hagen, and Keith-Anderberg. Courtesy of ALCESTER STATE BANK SPONSORED BY...
