3lumnrmllr LARGIF PKR IX OF JLNIOR VILLI I bb HOLD PICNIC ON MFSA SI RANGE BIRD I RAPPED The Juniors held a plcnlc on the m sa e rly ths f Il The members gathered frcm all over the town at the Hrgh School After a few mlnor ac cxdents such as the strang dlsappear ance of a box of prckles the spectac ular spills of some of our promment cltlzens namely Mayor Wlllard S der and the Rlght Honorable W ammer the crowd started off It was an Ideal nlght for a plcnrc A light ram ln the early aftern on had settled the dust and cleared the alr I'he moon three quarters full shone brrghtlv hidden oc cast nally by a small gray cloud drift Ing lightly across the sky drnen by a cool fresh breeze Away across the mesa byond the scattered gleaming lights the mountams rose a huge shadowy wall whlch seemed to say Halt' Behrnd us the lrghts of the clty burned warm and friendly gradually growmg famter untrl they were envel o ed In th dark shadows of the night The alr was strll and the soft thud of the horses hoofs the distant rmgmg of a bell or the muffled roar of an en g n echoed and re echoed with startl mg clearness Silence however drd not rule the mlnds of the unrors and the alr rang wlth the harmonious or otherwise sound of our vorces The Varsity was espe cially favored wrth a serenade through which ran an obllgato of kmdly wrshes and shrill whistles Ewerythmg from the Star Spangled Banner to that stlrrmg medoly The Wild Man from Borneo was feellngly rendered or perhaps unfeellngly rended the alr Even Geraldlne Ceaser our noble camne mascot and the lnseparable com panron of the noted Mr Seder favored us with a selection or two Suddenly we left the road and went Joggmg m rrlly over the rough mesa The sudden turn and the many bumps 652122112 jarred loose several occupants of the wagon but they far from bemg drs couraged trotted garly along beside the wagon to our destrnatron A flre was quickly kmdled and as the aforementioned ram had not ralsed the temperature to any notrceable de gree we all gathered gladly around lt beveral of the gurls lmmedrately ex pressed a deslre to bag some of the smpe of wluch they had heard so much so they set out conducted by udge Chavez W W Bacon Esq and Deacon Barton to trap that Interest mg creature Snrpe according to all reports can only be trapped by one who seeks therr haunts and there neath the light of the grastly moon awaxts with open bag the arrrval of sard snrpes drrven by hrs fel low hunter As the second hunter al ways seems to have drffrculty m drlv mg them or perhaps prefers to go off and enjoy himself rt may readrly be seen that the sport IS excltmg In the meantime lunch was lard out around the camp fxre and long strmgs of weenles were held suspended on wrres or umbrella staves over the glow mg coals Of course some of the weemes xnconsrderately fell Into the frre others appeared unusually black due no doubt to the clrmate but on the whole weenres rolls pickles not to mention forty leven different krnds of sandwlches and marshmallows were not to be sneezed at And drdn t we eat them3 Lunch over the sedate mhabltants of our ancrent clty so far forgot their dlgmty as to JOIN ln such chrldlsh games as drop the handker chref and others equally surprlsmg The only sad thing about a prcmc rs that rt always msrsts on endlng as drd ours After the frre had been scren trfrcally or at least artistically extmg ulshed we piled back rnto the wagon and set out for town As we moved steadily away we looked back at a thrn gray curl of smoke whrch rose like a tall lonely prllar ln the arr Farnter and famter rt grew untrl we rounded a low hull shutting lt out of sight forever . . - V V V . 4 I ' , - .
