4 httnrmla lo the students who have so wlllmglv contributed to the success ol tlns boo to the members of the Lommercral Department who have so courteouslv typed the materral for the press to the members of the Mech xnrcal Drxwmg Department w ho have so farthfully lettered and made drawmgs for us to tht l acultv who have en couraged and aided us to the advertrsers who by therr advertrsements have made tlre book possrble and to you who have rn erest enough rn the A H .S to read thus artrcle we the members of La Reata Staff extend our heartrcst thanks One of the edrtors ot this book started to wntt tn clnton xl concerning the de mrse of our lately beloved frlend Pep From lndrcatrons rt seemed that Pep hxd succumbed to the unlrlendly blasts of a cold world About Aprll Z4 however there seemed to be a slrght disturbance III the depths of the student body l rrday Aprll 25 there was a drstrnct upheaval and Saturday April 29 Pep rmperson ated by yellow and whlte bedecked Hrgh School gurls awoke from hrs hlbernatmg and won the lnterscholastrc Track Meet for us We beheve that he rs ahve to stay and rf he does stay ahve as he must A H S will teach New Nrexxco hugh schools how to come out on top IHIL Y M C A AND IHL HICJH bCHOOL One of the greatest accomplishments rn Albuquerque durrng the last vear was the establrshment of a Y M C A and the erectron at Prrst and Central of a splendid home for the organrzatlon The assoctatron which extends tts work to all parts ot the world arms to develop men physrcally mentallv and sprrltually lnhe physical side IS tramed rn the gymnaslum rn the different classes planned to improve the bodily condrtron the pool where every man and boy may learn to swlm rn basketball and srmrlar games whrch are popular ln the Y M C A The l-hgh School wrll receive dlrect benefrt from thrs phase of the work for her boys wrll be rn better condxtron to enter into chool athletrcs and wlll have an added enthusrasm for them As the Y M C, A takes the boys as young as elght years of age by the trme they are ready for Hugh School the athletic spmt rs well rnfused into their verns 'lhrough the lec tures and practrcal talks the boys wall come rn contact wrth men of hrgh mental calibre and by takrng advantage of the lrterature rn the readmg rooms they wrll be come famlhar wrth wrrters for boys Naturally the more the mmd IS used the more alert rt becomes and thrs wrll show tn our scholarship The moral tramrng comes almost unconsciously wlth the Brble classes other meetings and through personal contact wrth Chrlstlan men Recognrzrng the rmportance of thrs work the Hugh School has taken an actrve part rn rt smce the very begrnnmg of the campaign for rarsrng funds started rn No vember l9I4 Durrng the preparations for Campalgn Week a number of the commercral students helped rn the clerrcal work and when the actual task of col lectmg funds had begun the gurls were pressed into service as wartresses at the luncheons gtven to encourage the teams The Boys Team composed of Hugh School students drd good service and through therr efforts materlally swelled the fund In September l9l5 the cornerstone was lard and the burldlng was ready for furmshmg rn Aprrl of l9l6 At thrs trme tne burldmg was thrown open for the mspectxon of the public and among the thousands of Interested vrsrtors the l-hgh School was well represented The Y M Q A was the beglnnmg of the fmest team work the crty has ever seen and the get together spmt which was aroused durrng the campaign of l9I4 set a standard of co operatxon that has been of the greatest help to the clty ln sev eral undertakings that have been started SIHLC then chlefly the State Farr the funds I0 - 0 Q . , n r , , - tt, I V I . . z 2' , f V .. . ., , , , ., - v . Maybe thrs school IS not ready for student governm nt but rf the next Vear s faculty should decrde to grve the matter a trv out we belreve they would have the hearts co operatron of the student bodv In the I9I5 edrtron of La Reata an edrtorral appeared drscussrng the great extent of the crgarette habrt among the boys of thrs school Ir rs wrth great pleasure that we announce to the frrends of the school the remarkable decrease of thrs habrt durrng the past year At a banquet tendered the basketball and track men by the Domestrc Scrence grrls May 5 Mr Repp the coach made the statement that to hrs knowledge only one man rn athletrcs had used crgarettes durrng the school year It thrs record rs kept up for another frve vears, as rt surelv wrll be, the crga It rr V 1' ' , ' .
