Page 26 Bu iness Empha i Regardless ol' whether the graduating senior planned to make business his profession or not. those who were enrolled in the business courses were provided with the valuable training that will help them to lead more ellicient lives even il they do not continue in the chosen lield. lliversilied Occupations Club members re- ceived on-the-job training when they were em- ployed at variotts business places in town and also received payment as they gained lirst-hand experience. XVorking part ol' tlte day in school. they then journeyed to their places ol business. Valuable experience was accumulated by the student typists as they were taught the basic steps ol' setting up letters and memorandtuns. The typists strived lor speed and accuracy as they progressed in the knowledge ol' lamiliaril- ing themselves with the standard keyboard ol their machines by constant practice. Briel' forms, sounds and letters were taught to secretarial-mindecl pupils as they were tattght the main points of the art ol' stenography. Stu- dents aimed their sights on the goals ol' accuracy in the usage ol' strokes and speed ol' dictation. Second-year stenography students strived lor accuracy in the transcription ol' their short-hand notes. Alter taking letters at various speeds. the student was then required to type the let- ters and make a carbon copy that was mailable. course WORKING FOR ACCURACY and speecl, Shirley Selle and Karen Weurn are lust a 'few of the girls 'lalting practical sfenography.
