'l'he term ol' IS59-till was held in the ladies parlor of the Webber House con site ol St. Paul Clothingj. .-Xdrian K. Norton of' Alden was the teacher. The sum- tner ol' I860 saw school held in a small shoe shop way out on tI1e prairie where the l'rc-sbyterian Church now stands. Mrs. lViIliam Lowe handled the class. It seems she was very eflicient and experienced in the scientific: use ol' a ruler, as ntany ol' her pupils have related. By far the tlltlsl memorable of old school years was the year of' IS60-til. M. Y. Kellar, a pupil in the first schools, wrote in a historical paper on .-Xlbert Lea schools. .-X Miss Rice was teacher and though a most estimable young Iacly she had no more cotttrol over a nuntber ol the very large boys than we farmers have over a pen of hungry pigs. No one building could take the vandalism very long. 'I'he school Sl.2'1l'lCCl Olll in a stnall oflice near the Barlow- Spicer Drug Store. After a short while it was moved across the alley to a two-story store. Both stories were used attcl ruined. Soon the owner recognized the de- struction and evicted the vandals. School was moved to a vacant building at Broadway and Main. 'l'hen one INfonday morning, a note was Iouncl at the door saying that the students' books could be picked up at the XVebber House. However, with this school year came the slogan-School House. Since almost everyone in town wanted his children to get a better education, S-100 was appropriated for a new school house. Commerce Center Albert l.ea's now tremendous school building system started with this building built on the present junior high site. 'l'he building. completed October I, I8tiI, saw John l.. Gibbs as the first teacher. Church and Sabbath Day school were also held in tltis recently erected building. Other teachers to use this building were Lucy lVatkins, IS. XV. l'ritchard, Nelson Lanard, F. M. McRey- nolds, S. S. Sutten and Henry 'l'hurston. The building was much criticized because it was lo- cated so far out on the prairie. It was suggested in tlte Freeborn County Standard that a bridge should be built over the low spot on the corner ol' St. Mary Avenue attcl Clark Street so students migln be able to cross the street easier in inclement weather. For the winter term of ISISS-till. the lmilcling was Ulll- grown ancl a wagon shop on the present post oflice site was rented. Henry lhurston taught the older pupils in the old building while his most excellent wife taught the younger pupils at the other building. 'l'hus began graded schools in Albert Lea. On the high school block in I870, a two story frame building was built. It had our first bell tower. In IS72, a two-room building was built on the school block to acconnnodate more students. 'I'his begins the era of rapid increases in enrollment. The trustees ol' I872 had a real task on their hands. Any little thing that had to be purchased had to be okayed by them. 'l'hey Iistenecl to complaints about salaries paid, repair of buildings and mainly the schooling of the school-agers. N, . . t,,y , I. The manual fraining building, on Ihe righf, was erected in I895 ai the tremendous expendifure of SI4.000. 1--. BECAUSE OF NEED for space, the presenl junior high building was builf in I9II around Ihe IBBI school, af' a cosf' of SI00,000. if - slijg ' b- in AN ARCHITECTS CONCEPTION of 'Ihe remodeled high school which was finished in l929. Since if would noi have been pracficel fo fear down the old building, Ihe confracfors built around if. Wiih Ihis plan, any addifions could be annexed very easily. Page 5
