LETTER T0 THE CLASS or 1959 Mrs. Verna Rolf Director of Health Services Dear Graduates of 1959, Each of you has so much behind you during these last few years-tears, laughter, apprehension, criticism, and most of all-many, many days filled to overflowing with busy duties on your flo0I'S and many cram packed hours with last minute preparation for papers and examinations. i No longer will you be told when to come in, when to sign in and out-when to be quiet. You are now professional young women chosen above all others. You must give of yourselves because that 15 what nursing means. It is not for the selfish person. You belong to an outstanding profession honored and revered by all. 'Who else sees life in all its stark reality-from the miracle moment of birth to the sad but beautiful peacefulness of death? You've been discouraged many times and certainly will be again but a little magic formula, Called the Golden Rule does wonders. Apply it when you feel like losing your temper in front a doctor Wl'10 seems unreasonable, when a patientis demand seems out of proportion to his illness, when the task assigned you seems impossible to accomplish. By remembering this-you will find that life seems to treat you a little more kindly-what you do for others comes back to you a thousand fold. There is just one other word that I hope and pray none of you ever forget and that is the word Hcompassionf' ltls meaning should remain with us for no other word can describe nursing so C0mPletely' To be compassionate doesfnot mean that you are sentimental or weak, but rather that you are strong- Compassion means you understand and accept yourself and others . . . that you judge not too harshly. Compassion, above all, means never forgetting the little kindnesses, both in word and deed. You Wlll find you like yourself a little better too. Never forget, you are caring for human beings who have heartS and souls, as Well as sick bodies. The key to the future is in your hands-use it wisely.
