Albany, Georgia: Albany, Georgia, was named after the town of Albany, New York, probably for the reason that each city is located at the head of a navigable river. Though the town was located on the West bank of the Flint River by Alexander Shotwell, Nelson Tift is reputed to be its founder. In addition to approximately forty-five white churches, three radio stations, a TV station, and two newspapers, Albany boasts two points of interest, Radium Springs and Chehaw Park. Also, Turner Air Force Base and the Marine Supply Center are located here. Albany is considered the world's largest producer of paper-shelled pecans.
