2 he quesrion is not: How much are going to get out of it? Nor is it: How luch are you going to put into it? But her: How much are you going to say to no matter what unpredictability, n when what happens seems to have no m to what one thought was one's mmitment? 3 John Cage Lecture on Commitment” A Year from Monday tell me some of the general things you learned in school. well, i learned that when plants and ani- mals start out, they need half the genes from each parent to make it. every growing, liv- ing thing needs a certain amount of sun and rain and night and chemicals to exist in a good state. the organs and systems in the body func- tion by a process called homeostasis; it’s sort of an automatic compensation thing, if one organ is depressed, another one will be sti- mulated and carry the load. if you add more energy to a high energy system, the system explodes and ceases to exist, once in lab. i saw a kid throw a lighted match into a sink that had ether in it. i know that overdoses of drugs always cause the wrong thing to happen, people have to be careful about the chemicals that they put in their bodies, or they’ll ruin the balance of the body processes. most of the subjects that i took reduced a lot of concepts into equations that i had to learn. H3 0+ + OH- - 2H2 O 5 what else did you learn? you mean outside of school? yeah. well, if i drink too much, i can't function, and if i stay up all night to study for an exam, i feel tired for days. and too many extra-curricular activities means i have less time to study, so my marks suffer. i think i’m learning that idealism is a good thing, but that i have to consider big bad reality too, if i want to get the picture straight. and even a life of aestheticism takes money; like you have to live with both beauty and the beast. one of the really good things i learned was that 'the love you take is equal to the love you make.’ then you mean to say that the only thing you learned is that in order for anything to work properly there has to be a balance of systems? yeah, that's it. We begin by eschewing the role as specialists who deal only in parts. Becoming deliberately expansive instead of contractive, we ask, 'How do we think in terms of wholes?’ If it is true that the bigger the thinking becomes the more lastingly effective it is, we must ask, 'How big can we think?’ R. Buckminster Fuller Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth 8 ... One must not be an expert all the twenty- four hours! One must also do something in which one is 'no-one’. One must also do something about which one knows noth- ing. Acharya Rajneesh The Vital Balance with What good docs it do to learn people after you graduate?” about machines in school when you have to deal Albert M. White 10 Washington park free medical clinic medicine to the people All universities have been progressively organized for ever-finer specialization. Society assumes that specialization is natural, inevitable and desirable. Yet in ob- serving a little child we find it is interested in everything and spontaneously appre- hends, comprehends and coordinates an ever-expanding inventory of experience . . . We had assumed the child to be an empty brain receptacle into which we could inject our methodically-gained wisdom until that child, too, became educated. In the light of modern behavioral science experiments, that was not a good working assump- tion. Inasmuch as the new life always manifests comprehensive propensities I would like to know why it is that we have disregarded all children’s significantly spontaneous and comprehensive curiosity and in our formal education have deliberately instituted processes leading only to narrow specialization. R. Buckminster Fuller Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth no matter how we arc putting our lives together or what our personal commitments in this profession are, we know it’s got a lot more to offer than dealing with commo- dities. % The lark and the eagle in their flight leave no mark; the scientist leaves a mark, as do all specialists. You can follow them step by step and add more steps to what they have found and accumulated; and you know, more or less, where their ac- cumulation is leading. But truth is not like that; it is really a pathless land; it may be at the next curve of the road, or a thousand miles away. You have to keep going and then you will find it beside you. But if you stop and trace out a way for another to follow, or a design for your own way of life ,it will never come near you.” J. Krishnamurti The Only Revolution 16 Professors The Dean’s Message To the Class of 1972: I believe the word LOVE is still an in word with your generation. I’d like to encourage you to show LOVE for your profession after graduation by continuing to LEARN, by joining your pharmacy ORGANIZATIONS, by VOLUNTEERING for community health-related projects and by EDUCATING the lay public about the proper use of drugs. The need for continuing to LEARN is self-evident since, right up to your last lectures here at the college, we have been hard pressed to bring to you the latest of the rapid changes in pharmacy and in other phases of the health care system. You must continuously keep up this learning process. Pharmacy has its best chance to make itself heard through strong ORGANIZATIONS. Join your local, state, national and specialty groups to make them strong. You can contribute to your community by VOLUNTEERING to serve on narcotic control guidance committees, sanitation boards and the like. Through speaking to groups of students from elementary to college level and to community groups such as the PTA and the Rotary and Lions Clubs you can be helping in EDUCATING the general public about health matters. WHITE Dear Editor: Fire and Christmas are two seemingly opposite ideas, but have combined to produce disastrous re- sults in past holiday seasons. I refer directly to the fire hazard that can be produced by the Christmas Tree in your home. A dried-out Christmas tree in a home is like a bomb waiting for an opportunity to endanger your fam- ily and home. A few simple iedas to remember when placing your Christmas tree i. in your home: harmacy Keep tree indoors only as long iablish a as absolutely necessary. duration Cut the trunk on an angle at i to up- least 1 inch above the original lew role ontinues n each e made Whitney has on Director il Serv- nmunity ry spon- elinical r a clin- ected to of the ig to an mester” duration the co- Imogene erstown clinical ny Col- s to ad- pace, in cut end. Keep the angle cut end stand- ing in water as long as tree is kept in house. Place tree away from any source of heat. Check all electrical items to be used on or near the tree. Borax-and-boric acid water solu- tions that are used to treat Christ- mas trees are ineffective as flame- retardants. This solution is made effective only by increasing its vis- cosity with CMC to lOOOcps. CMC is available at any pharmacy. This solution only will slow down the rate at which the tree will burn. It is sprayed onto the surface of the tree. The best defense to prevent en- dangerment of family and home is to remove the Christmas Tree be- fore it dries out. Sincerely, MICHAEL E. KRUGMAN Don't Surrender Your Rights DR. ANDIC There are new winds—new health reforms—in the air that will affect you as members of the Pharmacy Community, whatever position you find yourself in within it. It is for that reason that I welcome an op- portunity—your invitation—to write this short article to stress your sacred duties as well as rights, both as pharmacists and as citi- zens. You have an inalienable right, (1) to participate in a decision-making process when your own future is at stake; (2) to know how to exercise your profession in the most honor- able and expert manner for which you are trained; (3) to continue your education as professional health experts after you graduate from college, so that you will not be left behind others in health pro- fessions or even those in your own field nor be prevented from making meaningful contributions to your profession, occupying increasingly more distinguished positions in the area of health services. As citizens just as much as pro- fessional pharmacists, you have a status in society that implies a vital role you are to play in society in the shaping of health programs for the persent generation as well as generations to follow. Don’t you think you are at least as well qualified, if not better, than any other citizen, to voice an opinion and assist in developing a public policy which you yourself will be asked to execute? You have got to know what are the stakes for your own future and for those who are to be protected from the rav- ages of illness and are seeking help before a policy is instituted rather than after. Moreover, the very freedom of your own, that of the profession and indeed of all of us, may depend on what you will do or not do. We live in an era where the right to know is being stressed, and rightly so. But is it not your right to know all there is to know about your own field as well as to know how to act in your re- spective towns in dealing with citi- zens who may not understand your problems but have the power to decide issues that clearly fall into your area of competency? It is in this connection that I point to an article, Socio-economics: Its Im- portance to Pharmacy, by E. Lou N. Larson in the Drake Post-Scalp, Drake University College of Phar- macy, (Vol. 20, No. 1, Spring 1971, p. 18), where we read among others about the pharmacist’s role in the field of drug abuse, venereal diseases, and other health prob- lems, including care in psychology and socio-economic aspects of these problems. May I quote: “Several of the major problems facing the health science profes- sions are basically socio-economic in nature and therefore must be (continued on page 6, col. 1) 105 Student Christian Organization Camera Club 106 107 jack nicolais. president, national student apha I Yearbook Staff editor ............. assistant editor . media specialist . business manager sports editor margaret eaton . . robert locke sheila brennan .. lorraine dye .......al hess 108 this is an alembic 109 110 Interfraternity Council Ill union athletes 112 Varsity Sports cross country howling 113 Basketball 1971-72 114 11 albert white athletic director ACP Panthers 116 coach wi Ison 117 118 At ACT -'wnwrTT 119 120 maura o’brien homecoming queen 1971 121 122 wm. £1 i ••• m VA. fH syyyyS.','?' mflgSPm KWjj National Pharmacy Week .ysyy .' ,?
