Rose Zobe! lang James Marmar The waters of the Hudson have torne witness to many faces of the city of Albany —periods of transition. Progress, in the form of concrete castings, has demanded the destruction of a relic. Old Albany, the stockaded city of the Revolution, has given rise to new dimensions. As our environment daily changes about us, we realize that as students Albany has become an integral part of our lives. It is the focal point of our education, the site of our own college and other insti- tutes upon whose educational facilities we depend. It is, for many of us, our permanent home; for others, only a temporary residence. Yet we all draw upon the city and its resources to provide our way of life. It is the site of activities apart from our academic endeavors, providing intellectual and social entertainment and relaxation. It is the seat of power in our state, imparting upon us a political awareness of the critical issues of our times and the significant role which our generation must fulfill. It is a city reflecting our own spirits—alive and growing, being and becoming— yet steeped in the memories of college life. % 41 U Si iv ti msm Hw s iimm t •ISP WSt. Dean's Message To the Members of the Class of 1969: Each of you is graduating because you have satisfied the demands of the rigorous professional curriculum of this College. By passing the required examinations, by com- pleting the scheduled laboratory work and by maintaining a suitable attendance record you have demonstrated your ability and desire to the satisfaction of the faculty. So now we let you go taking with you our sign of approval, the diploma. There are, however, factors that you take along with you that are not easily measured at this point in time. We, the faculty, have tried by teaching, and by example, to develop and to strengthen in you an idealistic approach to the practice of your profession. Very gradually, perhaps only after many years, will we learn of our successes and failures in this part of the curriculum. The measure will not be financial success; anyone who wishes to make money in today’s economy can do so. Our criteria are much more demanding. How vigorously will you seek out opportunities to apply concepts you have learned? Will you fight for your ideals or will you capitulate into acceptance of practice suitable for past generations but not for yours? Will you devote the time and energy required for continuous study of the professional and ethical developments within your field of practice? Will you be ready to push forward the frontiers of your profession as society makes available the opportunities for greater responsibilities? Or will you seek refuge in maintenance of the stams quo because you have destroyed your own capabilities to advance? Graduates of the Class of 1969, you have the intellectual power and the numerical strength to move your profession perceptibly in the direction in which you want it to go. Only if you move your profession forward will your educational experience here have been truly successful in the most complete sense. I have confidence in you. 6 Walter Singer, Dean 7 Biology Department William R. Stoll, B.S., Ph.D., Eugene A. Lentini, A.B., M.A., Ph.D. Charles H. Huppert, B.S., M.S., Ph.D., John E. Tennyson The climate of our times — our adolescent years, our college years — has been and continues to be one in which human dignity is stripped away exposing the bareness of man’s existance. In the name of justice and freedom a crescendo of violence is digging at the roots of our national morality. Action is in the form of irrational destruction rather than construction; hysteria rather than sane rationale. Change must come and protests sounded, but the bridge between justice and law must be swept clean of violence and recemented with reason and compassion. To this we dedicate ourselves. The war — the controversy of our times. The late Senator Robert Kennedy said: Still even though we must know as a nation what it is necessary to do, we must also feel as men the anguish of what it is we are doing.ā€ We are not only witness, but parti- cipants in the agony of children who have never known peace. And the heartache be- comes more familiar as we send our young men out to die. To question this we dedicate ourselves. So in the face of the brutality, bitterness, and pain, we maintain our pride in mankind; commit ourselves and dedicate the ALEMBIC PHARMAKON to peace among men. Impossible? But... Perhaps we cannot prevent this world from being a world in which children are tortured. But we can reduce the number of tortured children. And if you don’t help us, who else in the world can help us do this? Albert Camus Lynne K. Cotich Editor-in-Chief Seniors The sounds from the Bridge Empty upon the rippled lake.
