Athletic A wards Over 50 awards, were presented last night at the sixth annual Alamosa High School Athletic Awards banquet. Denver Nugget Dave Robisch was the featured speaker. Robisch related off-the-cuff expereinces of being a professional athlete to a crowd of around 500 athletes and parents at AHS auditorium. Girls coach Char Cary received a box of bananas and then roses and other flowers from her cheer- leaders and track team. The bananas matched the girls track uniforms-bright yellow. Athletes in all nine sports offered at Alamosa were recognized, team trophies presented to the school and all conference certificates given to winners. Besides MVP awards, praises and palques, support awards, the Manchester Award for scholastic and athletic achievement and the prized Alamosa A- Club medalion were given. Barney McLean received the MANCHESTER AWARD for his Work in cross country, track, being a basketball statistics man and maintaining a 3. 7 grade point average. MEDALLION AWARD winners were Tim Hellwig, baseball, Barney McLean, cross country, Chris Hunter, basketball, Terry Haynie, golf, Oren Wright, coach. Eddie Kollasch and Jim Fallis were tied for OUTSTANDING FRESHMAN ATHLETE. The MOST VALUABLE ATHLETE award was given Tim Hellwig. OUTSTANDING SENIOR GIRL ATHLETE award was given to Evelyn Oba. Toni Bowers received the OUTSTANDING SUP- PORT AWARD. OUTSATNDING CHEERLEADER was given to Tita Martinez. OUTSTANDING OFFENSIVE FOOTBALL player was Tim Hellwig and OUTSTANDING DEFENSIVE FOOTBALL player was James Noriega. MOST VALUABLE RUNNER and ALL-CONFER- ENCE for cross country was Barney McLean. Golf awards went to Mike Achatz, MOST VALUABLE PLAYER, Bobby Smith, GENERAL EX- CELLENCE, Kevin Leniz and Terry Haynie also GENERAL EXCELLENCE. Anthony Bernard was the MOST IMPROVED WRESTLER. Darrel Yohn, MOST VALUABLE AND OUTSTANDING WRESTLER. Both reveived con- ference plaques. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER In Girls Basketball was Kim Griffee. Basketball awards were OUTSTANDING FRESH- MEN, Tom Motz. OUTSTANDING SOPI-IOMORE, Mike Morgan. BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER, Tim Hellwig. Second Team All-CONFERENCE, Todd Cotton. First team ALL-CONFERENCE, Brian Garcia. AHS SWEAT AWARD, Tim Hellwig. First Team ALL- CONFERENCE, NORTH-SOUTH ALL- STATE GAME, MOST INSPIRATIONAL PLAYER, Chris Hunter. ALL-STATE GAME, AHS MVP, FIRST TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE, Loren Lutz. High Point person in Girls Track was Brenda Wilson. MOST VALUABLE MEMBER, Natalie Motz. Baseball awards were OUTSTANDING FRESH- MAN, jim Fallis, ALL-CONFERENCE HONORABLE MENTION, Frank 'Boogie' Romero, Steve Cavalier, Ion Rowley, Mitch Rosacker, James Noriega. OUT- STANDING PLAYER, Iames Noreiga. MOST VALU- ABLE PLAYER, ALL-CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM, Tim Hellwig. High Point Man for Boys Track was Chris Hunter. OUTSTANDING FRESHMAN, HIGH POINT, Eddie Kollasch.
