Many people also watched the Democratic and Republi- can conventions to see pom-poms and balloons engulf the delegates. A lot of Heightsters had cosmopolitan experiences at the World's Fair in New Orleans, While other people discovered the wonders of Europe through AIFS or on their own. In August, freshmen attend- ed orientation to find out where their classes were, and to familiarize themselves with a high school atmosphere. Hoards of Heightsters also in- vaded the movie houses. When students came back from vacation, they were concerned about their grades, the new 70 passing grade, limitations on absences and ABX's, and more stringent requirements for extra- curricular activities. During the first few weeks of school, Princi- pal Barney Newton spoke to students in special assemblies to explain the changes. While San Antonio remained fairly dry, up to 20 inches of rain fell in Brownsville, causing extensive flood- ing.
