... Mr. Nelson, chairman of the Speech and Drama departments, instructs two of his students on an assignment. Speech and Drama Speech is designed to help students learn that suc- cessful reading, whether silent or oral, depends upon understanding, to stimulate a student's thinking proces- ses, to enable a student to give an audience the benefit of his understanding of a selection, to bring a joy of liter- ature to a student and to further a student's develop- ment of good body, voice, and diction. Speech is designed to develop student understand- ing and appreciation of prepared and impromptu speak- ing. Emphasis is upon organized and reflective thinking in preparation and presentation. It gives the student a knowledge of how to become a more valuable citizen through interest in public questions, awareness of the value of thinkingg and recognition of logical reasoning as distinguished from inflammatory oratory. Drama includes a study of theatre history, begin- ning with a survey of the development of the physical theatre and its equipment in terms of the important theatrical periods, and ending in the study of acting techniques. It covers the principles of stagecraft in re- lationship to the total production. 26 Mr. Gale H. Nelson B.A., M.A. University of Texas, University of Cal- Mr. Wiliam H. panish Spanish enables the student to focus on the language as speech by a completely audio-lingual approach. Extensive drill, using authentic native voices, aids the student with the mastery of the sound system of Spanish before concerning him- self with the spelling of the language. Audio-lin- gual instruction in the form of dialogues and pat- tern drills built around authentic situations of in- terest to the age group is stressed. Short conversations recorded by native speak- ers of Spanish are learned through listening and repeating. These provide a background for new vocabulary, improving the rhythm of speech, and for extensive drills on grammar. Oral work is sup- plemented by written exercises and composition. Reasonable proficiency in comprehension of an execution of oral speech at native speed is expect- ed. The history and culture of Spain are studied, and reading is from a selection of short stories, es- says, drama, poetry and novels by Spanish authors.
