Freshman En lish English 1 and 2 are designed to give the student definite, concrete language skills which he will need throughout his high school career. Basic grammar concepts are reviewed with special emphasis on important details of sentence struc- ture and correct usage. Stress is also placed on correct manu- script form, spelling, and punctuation. Practice is given in the development of the paragraph, the thesis sentence outline, the precis, and the whole theme. Logic and clarity are emphasized in all oral and written composition. Reading is an important part of this course. Biographies, articles, essays, drama, mythology, short stories, poetry, and at least one novel are studied. Literary- terms used to discuss the various literary forms are introduced, and conscious vo- cabulary enrichment is accomplished by study of words in context taken from material read. Frequent and systematic use of the library is followed during the year as an additional stimulation to develop a permanent reading habit by learning to read with pleasure and understanding.
