Brown Physics General Science Nelson SCIENCE The main purpose of General Science is to develop scientific attitudes and to create scientific thinking. The course touches the fields of biology, chemistry, and physics. Biology, offered to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, is the study of the plant and animal kingdoms, the physiology of the human being, heredity, and conservation. Chemistry involves considera- tion of the metric system and its application to science, the properties of various elements and techniques for identifying these elements, and the application of industrial processes in pre aration of more im ortant chem- icals. Physics covers elementary principlles of mechanics ang liquids, ele- ments of electricity, and introduction to heat, sound, and light. Mr. james B. No student is penalized because of lack of skill provided that he has tried to develop the skill, taken part in class work, and hlas shown proper cooperation and good sportsman- s lp. INDUSTRIAL ARTS The main purpose of the Industrial Arts Depart- ment is to teach students the characteristics of such materials as wood, metal, leather, plastics, and fundamental electricity. A knowledge of both hand tools and machine tools is also important. The courses of study are planned so as to have an avocational ap eal. Some students will, and have acquired sufficient interest in Industrial Arts to lead them to their life's work. 25

The guidance department is based on the principal that every person is an individual of worth. It strives to meet the needs of the student in educational, vocational, and personal fields. Mrs. Grace Sheffield Nurse Miss Dorothy Bunyan Director of Guidance Our school nurse has many jobs which occupy her time. Keepingg health records of each student and taking care of illnesses which occur during school hours are two of her principal jobs. She also assists with dental and physical examinations and does the screening of vision and hearing defects. The library in Alamo Heights is a constant source of pride and pleasure to students and faculty as well as to members of the com- munity, who often use it. It is the one school area which touches everyone, regardless of his age level or interest. Its prime purpose is to provide a laboratory of information and research. ,,....- Miss Mary B.
