Reaney Mrs. Thelma Lamb Montellano Spanish Spanish FOREIGN LANGUAGE An extensive study of two foreign languages, Latin and Spanish, is offered to all students. Latin gives a fundamental understanding of the literary back- ground of English and affords an appreciation of a civilization which has contributed greatly to our own language and culture. Basic grammar, vocabu- lary, history, and the translation of simple Latin in the first year progresses to the reading of Caesar's Gallic Wars in the original fonn in the second year. Spanish classes stress the three-Way approach-reading, Writing, and speaking- and include materials and activities aimed at developing a real appreciation for the Hispanic peoples, their language and their cultures. In the advanced courses Spanish magazines, recordings, and movies supplement the study of the novel Jose and an intensive grammar review in the third year, and basic training in commercial Spanish in the senior year. 23
