Working along with Nancy were Lynn Pearson, vice president; Beth Cornell, recording secretary; Rita Goodman, financial secretary; and Cindy Powell, yell leader. Listening to the ideas of all the people of the school, no matter how much in the corners they were, had a great deal of effect on the quality of the Student Body Meetings. Having the meetings every two weeks, kept people involved in more school activities. Spirit Week this year, was again won by the Senior class, who were Patriots. The runner up Junior Juvies, ran a close second, followed by Sophomore 49er’s and Freshmen Surfers . Another well planned event was Homecoming Week. The week started off with all of the queen candidates participating in a pie eating contest which ended up in a fighting mess. Later in the week, the candidates were dressed up by the owners, who bought them the day before, only to be dragged back and forth in an ice blocking contest at noontime. Ad-Board Works Hard to Achieve Success Gs.) : I Sa ES = — = , Under the leadership of Tom Frankel, who served as Speaker, this years Fall Ad Board did most of its planning over the summer months. Lending Tom a helping hand were Greg Bongiovanni, Secretary, and Liz Everett, Vice Speaker. Ad Boards’ opening dance, “Since We're Neighbors, Let’s Dance’’. was a huge success. Letting students in free with a student body card also promoted the sales of student body cards. Even though the Bond Issue failed, Ad Board worked hard to try to pass it, and initiated the idea of noon time record dances. Besides these accomplishments, hard working Ad Board took care of the regular business which keeps student government rolling along. Right: Ad-Board speaker Tom Frankel. Above: Fall Ad-Board ‘74. SCC Funnels Student Input Into Courses _— The Student Curriculum Council serves Alameda High School by feeding students input into the courses taught in school. This year the council’s projects included: taking a position on the Bond Issue, Re- Evaluating the idea of getting advisory grades, studying what goes into a student’s permanent records, and adding to a descriptive book of classes available at Alameda High School. The council was headed by Barb Jacak; David Robinson was vice chair-person. Minutes were taken by Greg Bongiovanni. Advisor for Student Curriculum Council is Barrry Conner. Meetings are held on alternate Wednesdays. Other members included are: Judy Ballard, Debbie Barker, Sandy Blount, Nancy Brownson, Rick Cooper, Becky Corral, Joy Creese, Anne Hasegawa, Lisa Hempy, Juanita Matsuoka, Terry Millican, Keith Van Sickle, Meredith Young, Susan Young, Mel Zundel. Vocal, Instrumental, and Modern dance students performed at an 8:00 P.M. performance. The Orchestra, directed by Carlton Hansen, presented “A Christmas Festival,” “T’ll Be Home For Christmas,” and “The Christmas Song.” The choir sang ‘““Ave Maria” which was directed by Mrs. Shirley Vidal. As a change from last year, there was a brass ensemble directed by Dominic Vinceguerra. They played a variety of old and favorite Christmas carols. Participating again this year were members of the modern dance classes. Directed by Maria Molnar, they presented “Christmas in Dance.’’ As an added attraction, Patti Hanna of the San Francisco Ballet, was seen in “Variation du Ballet” from Serenade. Like always, the Christmas Pageant was a successful event, and added Christmas AHS Stage Band spirit to Alameda High, and to the public which attended. : . . =p Nikki, Dare Janet Hanly rehearse for the pageant Scott Janusch, Barb Jacak, and Emil Miland before the performance Combined Christmas Pageant Vocalists String Ensemble A.S.H. Besides performing in Christmas Pageants, the Orchestra gave its yearly presentation of yuletide classics to the Rotary Club. The traditional Christmas spirit of Alameda High School, was continued as the band played Christmas carols during noon time. Within the band, about twenty members perform in a stage band, which plays jazz and pop. Outstanding performances in band and orchestra were turned in by Nancy Brownson on cello, Emil Miland also on the cello, Scott Janusch who played the oboe, and Kendall Wilson who played the bassoon. Kim Varner served as an excellent student director, this past fall season, and also played the flute. Band and orchestra concluded their year by performing at the — graduation ceremonies. AYRES Arthur Rubinstein, the famous pianist, was asked recently the secret of his success-was it dedication, ability, discipline, hard work? . Mr. Rubinstein smiled as he remarked, “It’s hard to say, but one thing I do know; IF YOU LOVE LIFE, LIFE WILL LOVE YOU BACK”. What a wonderful insight! That philosophy explains how a man of 83 can continue to be so creative. For life is simply filled with exciting blessings for everybody. THEY’RE OURS IF WE GIVE ENOUGH OF OURSELVES TO LIFE. I believe the giving starts when we get up in the morning. One man I know begins everyday repeating some words from scriptur e such as, “WHEN I AWAKE! AM STILL WITH THEE”. Then he talks more directly with his Maker, “LORD, YOU’VE WATCHED OVER ME THROUGH THE NIGHT. NOW HELP ME DO SOMETHING REALLY GREAT WITH THIS DAY”. Watch what happens to members of your family when you begin the day with a glow of good feeling and joy. They'll catch it too. The same will hold true for the people you encounter all day long, in the office, at the restaurant, in the bus, in the elevator, at the grocery store or at your neighbors? Love life and life will love you back. Love people and they will love you back. (The preceeding is taken from an article which Mr. Ayres always carried in his wallet. This is what he lived his life by.) ° rr i There are few things as beautiful as the grace of an athlete” Mike Cildea . : = me Varsity Suffers Losing Season The Alameda Hornets disappointing season came out with an overall record of 4 wins and 6 losses, good for a third place in the A.C.A.L.
