The existence of Alabama Slate University is likr: a jigsaw puzzleh constantly perplexing those forces which seek to Oblitcraic the institution. An ancient reminder is how opponents fiied suit in 1887 when the institution nmvcd :15 Lincoln Normal School in Marion, Alaq and opened in Monlgomery as the Alabama Colored Peoples Universily. Com- ing as no surprise, the Supreme Cou r1 of Alabama in 1888 declared unconstitutional ccrlnin sections of the Act which created the university. Consequently legislative Funding for lhc sch0ul was out off in an attemp: lo paralyze Lhc instilulion. This would have engendered the demise of the insti- tution were it not for President William Burns Pa- terson and friends who kept the university operating from tuition and voluntary contributions. Today, however. Alabama State University is no longer ' battling to exist but ufighting to continue as a viable institulion. For instance. in a display of acute cultural myopia, Gov. Fob James rccentty conjured up a proposal which seeks to merge Alabama State Univcrsiayh Troy State University at Montgomery and Auburn University in Montgomery under one imitulion to be dubbed the University of Montgom- cry. The proposal first surfaced when Dr. Levi Wm- kins was 1hr, presidenl of this institution. But now that Dr. Watkins has passed lhc administrative mantle to Dr. Robert L.
