I'HngNI'FU P RESIDENT TRENHOlM . may. 1936 PRESIDENT H COUNCILL TRENHOLM C3 H: '1' NJ liq 1 -..3 .. 1939 Summer Quarter QWJ The idea of a GRADUATES BOOK was initiated upon the occasion of the 1937 Summer Quarter Commencement. 1!: represents an attempt to preserve an uflicial pictorial record Of the commencement season and to offer an appealing means of recollection in aftet-years to the graduates for whom the Occasion was of particularly momentous satis- faction at the time. With the two formal corerencemetltS of each calendar year, this hook becomes the hfth in the series of Graduates Books and the second of the two to he issued for the 1939 calendar year. The record of commencements for the State Teachers College goes back to the year of 1880 when the school was in operation at Marion as the Lincoln Normal University and when in May of that year six diplomas were awarded by the late President William Burns Paterson. There were eight gfaduating classes at Marion 11830-18871. The school was moved to Montgomery in 1887 and the htst class in Montgomery received diplomas in 1890. These graduates from the hve-year Normal course continued through 1913. after which time a high school diploma based on twe1ve grades of work was awarded. The summer quar- ter commencement has been on the calendar of the State Teachers College at Mentgomery1 since 1922 when the summer school was operated on a sixry-day basis for a second summer and when the First summer quarter graduates received Junior Ceilege diplomas from this division that had been initiated with the reorganization in 1920. The first B. S. degrees were conferred in 1931. Consequently, this commencement of 1939 is the occasion for the conferring of the B. 5. degree and the awarding of junior college and senior high school diplomas including both those completing the work on August 11 and those whe will not complete their work until August 30 at the close of the Inter-Scssion but who are participating in the commencement of August 11. With the rapid expansion of the institution and the development of the extensive in- serviee training program through summer school and extension classes, the number of gradu- ates has grown rapidly and the size of respective graduating elaSses has mounted. The fol- lowing exhibit of figures is illustrative of the increase in the number of graduates: Senior College Junior College Senior High Total 1939 Summer Quarter , . ..... 101 224 46 371 1938 Summer Quarter ........... 77 216 35 328 1937 Summer Quarter . . . . .. . . 37 138 25 250 1939 Spring and Summer ....... 136 325 110 771 1938 Spring and Summer ........ 123 316 103 542 1937 Spring and Summer. . . . .. . 72 260 112 434- Grand Total tines the hrst commencement . . . . . . . . . . . 570 2,238 2,824 5,630 To the graduates of the 1939 Summer Quarter, commendation is extended for the achievement of graduation. These graduates are we1eomec1 into the euer-widening circle of alumni of the institution. The hope is expressd that there may be the opportunity for further study and for another graduation occasion that will represent further academic achievement for each of the graduates. The State Teachers College expects of this new group of alumni a eanseientious professional service and a wholesome devotion to the worthy ideals of the institution. H.
