U. S. S. ALABAMA «0? -{X -U -Or -{X -Or -Or The U.S.S. ALABAMA (BB60), fourth vessel of her class, was commissioned August 16, 1942, and joined th e fleet early in 1943. Since that time she has logged many a mile, and compiled a combat record of day to day excellence in performance of duty, while participating in each phase of the war, that every man aboard may well be proud of. The Mighty A has been with naval forces participating in— 1943 Spring and Summer — Operations protecting NORTH ATLANTIC supply routes. Operations with the BRITISH HOME FLEET, including — The NORWAY Invasion Feint. Fall— Operations protecfing and supporting SOUTH PACIFIC supply routes and operations. November — Operations in support of the occupation and capture of the GILBERT ISLANDS. December — Bombardment of NAURU ISLAND. 1944 January— Bombardment of Jap-held islands of KWAJALEIN ATOLL in the MARSHALLS. February — Operations in support of the occupation and capture of the MARSHALL ISLANDS. The First TRUK Raid. The raid on SAIPAN and TINIAN, in the MARIANAS, including — A thirteen-hour ship vs plane battle in which a sustained Jap air attack was repelled without damage to our forces. March — Strikes on PALAU, YAP, and WOLEAI, in the western CAROLINES.
