av v f ! - -112.4 TORPEDO N i' YE CLASSE HISTORIE ln the eventful year of nineteen hundred and twenty, a class thirty strong marched into the halls of Akron High School, planning to take it by storm, yet when it came down to the real facts we were timid and shy, but willing to learn the ways and means of this great institution of knowledge. The first few months of that first year was spent getting twisted about, losing our way to different class rooms and finding out that the four subjects that were selected for us were somewhat harder than the eight or nine that we had been taking in the grades. That was the debut of the present class of 1924. Since the time of our first entrance to the present time the num- ber has dwindled down to nineteen. Since the advent of our entrance many familiar faces have disappeared. however many new ones have entered. The class of '24 has always held a prominent place in all lligh School activities throughout its career. In ath- letics we always had our share of men on the team. The girls of the class won the lnterclass Basketball champion- ship for both 19.23 and 1924. The boys captured the Inter- class Tournament in their junior year. In 1923 they took the lnterclass Track Meet by a large margin. ln socal activities the class of '24 has held a prominent place. They were always original in their entertainments and parties. In llramatics and Declamatory they have always been well represented, making up about two thirds of the cast of lligh School plays and taking first in Declamatory con- tests. tlur lligh School career has been a most pleasant one. No matter in what direction we may take after graduation we can never forget the good times we have had in Arkon lligh School, and it is not without regret that we take our leave. 1'A0V f ! f'T 15.4 T ORPE D0 Q PU l LOOKING INTO THE CRYSTAL There appears a slight mistg it gradually grows darker. Something seems to be darting across the sphere. It is everywhere at once. It upsets everything else. Upon looking closer it reveals itself: Donald Cross, ath- letic coach, dictator of sports, Ruble Iowa. Far up the street a resturant, Alma Anderson and Mable Kjose, pro- prietors, home made pastry. Next door is the office of the VVeekly Disturber, Bartley Ogden, editor. Above the office a beauty parlor, Mlle. Desia VVallin, proprietress. Cliart has a real permanent wave.j ln the same building, that terrific brunette stenog, Caryl McCorkle, the terror of many a business man's wife. g A little farther down the street, Gerald Smith, commercial operator. CgSlasher of many a concert.j The scene shifts to a dark overcrowded district of tenement and board- ing houses. Looking into the window of the upper story the living Iidgar Allen Poe sits in the form of Harold Clark, a genius, struggling with his art and five cats CPoe used the family cat for a foot warmerj. This scene fades, Iowa City hoves into view, Richard Klauer has at last realized his life's ambition-college-after patiently teaching for the past fifteen years. Also, Bessie Bennett is a modest principal of one of the city's schools. Bobbed hair intact, Dorothy johnson, fast star in the All State basketball team, now instructor in girl's athletics, University of Iowa. Hilda Hoschler, Iowa City's heart smashing nurse. Bad business except for Dick Hauck, furniture dealer and undertaker. On the beach, a vast expanse of water, Spike Brown and Spuds An- derson, life savers, My Hero, Oh Boys. The Great Out Doors: Peg Burke, foreman on the ranch of Runt Ross, a three powder-puff woman and a two gun man. Back to habitation, Genevieve Christenson has successfully run a coun- try school without the demerit system. Somewhere this side of the Rockiesg Ruth Brown, authoress of the world famous Roughing It on Mars is making coffee over an open fire on the plains of Canada. Pierpont Morgan's bankg Edith Johnson has won, through the co-operation of VV. I.. Conder, world renowned agriculturist, and is depositing the 310,000 cash prize offered by the Department of the Interior for answering the question, Why do you feed beef cattle ? Again the scene shifts backs to little old Akron and what have we here? An addition to the original Dahl store conducted by the honorable Norman, minety stories have made almost a skyscraper. But, listen, Doc Fletcher has made his air castles a reality, he has constructed the City above the Clouds. 1975. -Ruth Brown.
