Among Miss Brown’s extra tasks at Ahoskie High is that of yearbook adviser. She is con¬ stantly putting aside her classwork to give any needed assistance on this publication. The staff of The Chief would be lost without the careful proofreading and copy alterations that Miss Deborah is responsible for. 6 Miss Brown labors over pages of copy for the annual. » ay f » p. n cmnrrr t

Tribute to a Martyr The staff of THE CHIEF has seen it fitting and ap¬ propriate that a tribute to John Fitzgerald Kennedy, our late President, be included in this issue for the year 1964. He was a young man, alive with an intense love of living, and possessing a keen, understanding interest in, and concern for, the problems of the young people of our time. In words far more eloquent than ours could ever be, Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. in the edition of the SATURDAY EVENING POST for December 14, 1963, has presented a moving eulogy to the President. From this beautiful tribute we present the following excerpt: ' . . . But overriding everything else, he had a vision of America, of what this country might do and might be, and he had a vision of the world. He saw this nation as a noble nation, raising the standards of existence and opportunity for all its citizens. He was always receptive to new experience, and new experi¬ ence steadily deepened his sense of what America must do to fulfill the vision . . . And so a crazed political fanatic shot him down. With this act of violence, and with the violence that followed, the idea of America as a civilized nation - the idea which John F. Kennedy so supremely embodied - suffered a grievous blow. The best way to serve his memory is to redeem and revindi¬ cate the values of decency, of rationality, of civility, of honor - those values for which he stood through his life and to which in the end he gave his life. And so we, as those upon whom the future fate of America depends, can best serve the memory of this great and good man by committing ourselves to the ideals for which he lived so valiantly. In the words of another great American, we can ... Dedicate our¬ selves to the unfinished task remaining before us.” We can, indeed, present such profiles in courage as will best serve our day and generation. The flag on the front AHS campus hovers at half mast against a mourn¬ ful grey sky on the day of the tragic murder. As a token of respect and love, Ahoskie High School suspended classes for the day and television sets were installed at various vantage points throughout the build¬ ing on November 22, 1963, on the occasion of the fu¬ neral of President Kennedy. Many pupils gathered in the auditorium and followed reverently and quietly the details of this deeply moving ceremony. Thus they were privileged to see and hear history in the making as the humbled world paid homage to the memory of our great President. 8
