They battled it out but were short three points from making it to the state meet. lt was somewhat disappointing, but really it was a success because every girl ran her best time of the season and l really couIdn't have , been happier with their performance, said N Coach Hawkins. This was Coach Hawkins first year teaching and coaching. She ran competitively for four years in high school but felt she wanted to start running for the fun of it. She felt that by coach- ing, she could run and enjoy it, I like the team C being small because it was easier to give them Crunnersl individual attention, Miss Hawkins said! Placing for AF were junior, Julie Levaria, ju- nior, Katy Rivera, senior, Elizabeth Reed, junior, Beth Muse, senior, Heather Pierre, and junior Colleen Adney. The boys, who were coached by Wayne lareman, easily cruised through divisionals losr eason winning by 40 srrokes wirh all players nishing in rhe rap ren. The girls, who were goached by Carol Smirh, also played well in neir srare rournamenr and finished rhe year virh a 04 record. John Burremiller was rhe Owls mosr valuable ilayer for rhe boys ar divisionals wirh rounds of 55 and 77. Durremiller, who spenr rhe majority if rhe year playing number 1 and 2, reamed ip wirh Kenr McMillan ar rhe srare rournamenr o assure 11rh place for Agua Fria. For rhe girls rearn, Shannon Wilson ended virh rhe lowest rounds of 102 and O8 ro clinch 'rh place for rhe Owls in rhe srare rournamenr. Vilson's feelings about rhe year were de- fl - scribed as being a fun season. Next year we'll have a lor of returning varsiry players and we should have a prerry good season, she said. On Nov. 18 rhe Owls rraveled ro Lalse Ha- vasu ro compete in the divisional meer, Afrer losing rheir former No. 1 runner, Dale Sheeley, rhe Owls had almosr considered rhe srare meer our of reach. They were concenrraring on plac- ing fifrh as a ream since rhe rop five reams go ro rhe srare meer. They nor only qualified for rhe srare meer, bur rhey placed fourrh in rheir division. I was delighred rhe boys qualified for srare. They wenr ro divisionals believing rhey were a long shor for rhe 5rh Clasrb qualifying posirion and ended up finishing 4rh.
