5 it L '-x - A The Varsity football team was led by a new coaching staff. Promoted to the Varsity program were Head Coach Bill Belcher, Defensive Coaches Bob O'Connor and Marc Berke. and Offensive line Coach Larry Blonski. The valiant Chargers had a fine season, led by a junior-dominated team, going all the way to Hrst-round C.l.F. play-offs in Paso Robles, despite being plagued by injuries, and different coaching tactics. Season highlights include defeating cross-town rival, Oak Park: crushing Calabasas at their Homecoming: and pulling through with a dramatic victory over Santa Paula at our Homecoming. Among the top players on the team were Craig Brink, Curtis Schmidtberger and Kevin Carter, who shared Co-M VP honors, as well as earning positions on the All- Frontier League team, and Cam Johnson, recipient of the Greg Cole Award. Running backs Todd Silver and Vince Shelton carried the bulk of the running attack, while Alan Lasker and Henry Gasbarri did their share of damage with the receiving attack. The defensive effort was spearheaded by Schmidtberger and Carter, as well as All-Frontier League cornerback Steve Armstrong, and tackles Rob Stilson and Gary Hougardy.
