in U.S.S. AG ERHOLM, the first ship of the line to bear the name, was named for PFC Harold C. Agerholm USMCR, who gave his life so that others might live, during the battle of Saipan in 1944. PFC Agerholm was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for conspicous galantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life,above and beyond the call of duty , and was further honored when DD 826 was named after him. The U.S.S. AGERHOLM was built in 1946 at the Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine and was commissioned 20 June 1946. This year marks her twentieth anlversary of ser- vice with the fleet. ' AGERHOLM was originally intended for use as a multi-purpose destroyer with both 5 inch and 3 inch gun batteries and an ASW battery of torpedoes and depth charges. AGERHOLM operated in the waters of both the Eastern and Western Pacific from the time of her commissioning untilthe out- break of the Korean Conflict in 1950. In February 1951 , AGERHOLM sailed from her home port of San Diego and joined the famous Task Force 77, operating off Korea. During the next two years AGERHCLM , ,. ,-.N--Q A-mn WMA, ,Nl Y i - f-lf run: 'f made a second tour of duty off Korea and sustained minor damage from Communist fire. For her action during the Korean War AGERHOLM received four battle stars. AGERHOLM continued as an active member of the U.S. Pacific Fleetuntil May 1960 when she entered the Mare Island Naval Shipyard for a FRAM fFleet Rehabili- tation and Modernizationl overhaul. Emerg- ing from the yards in March 1961, AGERHOLM sported the new DASHXASROC configuration and possessed new electronic, radar and sonar devices, making her atruly versatile ship. After extensive training, in May 1962, AGERHOLM was given the distinction of being the first to fire a nuclear antisub- marine rocket during operation DOMINIC. Since that time AGERHOLM has made three deployments to the Western Pacific, this last one being her fourteenth. During this cruise she visited the famous Navy towns of West Pac-Yokosuka, Kaohsiung, Subic Bay and Hong Kong. She conducted extensive operations off the Vietnamese coast and earned the respect and praise of all those with whom she came in contact, for her EXPERTUS performance.
