This may be partly due to the fact lllfll Offer The Second World War the governing military forces did not play the part of dominating conquerOrS- GUY occupation forces made a sincere effort to understand the Japanese. To these people, a kind or a polite word or gesture is of utmost worth. The variance in customs and traditions of the Japanese people are readily apparent. A great west- ernization trend has been sweeping Japan at an ever-increasing rate. An example of this may be seen in the younger generation of the Japanese people. Their taste in wearing apparel has changed from The traditional Getas lwooden shoesl and Kimonos to pedal pushers and bobby SOX. Japanese people are very hard working, and necessarily so, because of the fairly inhospitable land in which they live. Centuries of feudalistic life have linked them to land or sea, and every available foot of land is under cultivation. Japanese people are traders, too. Because Japan has always had TO SUI'VlVe, shrewdness is another of their ingrained qualities. The hard lives the people lead has never kept their spirits down, and it seems that they are the happiest people in the Grient. Perhaps 't is because the simplicity of their lives has made it possible for them to enioy to the utmost the pleasures 'c' ' f land.
