Barnes was born in Berkeley, California. l-le attended Sacra- mento College in Sacramento, California and the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California. Commissioned an Ensign in October l95O, he first served aboard the USS SEMINOLE KAKA-lO4j. Other duty assignments included Executive Officer of the USS OILLISSO CAMCU-l3l, Air Defense Officer of the USS ST. PAUL QCA-735, Shipping Security Officer, FIFTEENTH Naval District and Personnel Officer of the U.S. Naval Station, Rodman, Canal Zone. LCDR Barnes also attended General Line School in Monterey, California, Prior to reporting as Executive Officer of the AGERHOLM, LCDR Barnes was the Executive Officer of the USS PICTOR lAF-545.
