She was the victim of Muscular Dystrophy and battled the disease all of her life. The 1987 Sachem staff dedicates this page in memory of Angela Amellin. Angela would have graduated with the class of '87. Angela lived a lifetime in her very short 15 years. She loved life and she did many things that a person with her disability could not always do. Angela was my sister and my best friend. To all Angela's friends our family is passing on this message, THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND. Angie spoke so often of her friends. Angie was not shy around her family and friends. She would perform with her hands and feet and mime songs. She did all this while sitting in her wheel chair or from a stool or sofa. I miss my sister very much and my parents still feel the pain of Angela's death. They like to remember the good times and they never hesi- tate to talk about her to anyone. Talking about the good and bad times she had, seems to keep her close to us. I wrote this dedication for you Angie with lots of love from the whole family. Mom, Dad, Richard, Terry, and especially myself. A lot of love from all your Aunts, Uncles, cousins and from your two Grandmothers, Grammie and Nanny. They all miss you very much. -Laura Amellin Olivia Newton John . .. No Can Do ... New York, New York . .. Grease ... Annie ... Of the Brownies' six losses, four were by one touchdown or less. The Brownies, led by Coach Modzelewski, had an outstanding de- fensive team, coached by Cary Geiger. The defense was ranked third in the conference. The Senior muscle on the squad includ- ed outside linebackers Tom King and John Cappuccilli, strong safety Joe Antico, and inside linebackers Rob Longo and co- captain Jeff O'Keefe. The other two strong linemen were tackle Bob Altobelli, and nose guard Vinnie Pallotta, also co-captain. As the season progressed, the Brownies upset the strongest team in Western Mass, Westfield, with a 21-0 win. That victory proved to be the highlight for the Brownies. Key performers in the game were Sophomore quarterback John Serra and Senior running backs Todd Godek and Dan DeMatos. Receivers Jim Lockwood, a Junior, and Senior Paul Scibelli, also played key roles in the victory. The last game against Agawam's arch rival West Springfield ended in a 21-0 victory for Agawam. Three outstanding special team players in the victory were seniors Larry Eldridge, Evan Humphries and Steve Jarvis. Tom plans for a Brownie win CELEBRATE!! BOYS SOCCER Boys Soccer Conquers Western Mass Agawam's outstanding Boys' Soccer team be- gan the season with one of their best opening day performances ever - a victory over Amherst 8- 1. Varsity Coach Dick Cowles saw the fewest losses in the teams history with a final record of 10-3-8. Senior Tri-Captains Dave Szabla, Frank Evangelista, and Jeff Martin led the team to many record breaking wins. Junior Ricky Parolo holds the Western Mass, record for most goals in a season with 27. Senior goalies David Andry and Jeff Barker produced the record for the fewest goals allowed. Tom Sullivan showed powerful control as a sweeper as did Sophomore Chad Alechny. Senior Brian Nicole was also a strong asset for the Brownies defense. The talents of Seniors Mike Malinoski, John Martin, and Tony Young led the team to their success. Senior Matt Bogacz was injured but remained an enthusiastic member of the team. Frank Evangelista was voted MVP for the Western Mass. Tournament. All in all the team effort paid off as they finished the season with a Western Mass, title under their belt. The memory of the final shutout over Lud- low 2-0 to capture the title will remain with the players and fans forever. The JV Boys soccer team The season ends in success GIRLS SOCCER Girls Booters Look Good Again The Agawam High School girls soccer Varsity- Soccer Team finished with a record of 11-3-3, one of the best Agawam Girls Soccer has seen. Under the coaching talents of Bill O'Brien, seven of the last nine games were wins, the other two were ties. The girls were seeded fifth in the Western Mass tournament and ended up in fourth place in Division I, with 25 points. Senior tri-captains Sue Girard, Lynne Waryasz and Leigh Whittaker led the team on the defen- sive, while Senior striker Sue Fassnacht along with Junior Kelly Sullivan and Freshman Karen Patter- son exploded on the front line. Expertly securing the net was All Western Mass goalie Patricia Landry. Seniors Tricia Longo, Rebecca Ludemann and Cindy Roy added the final touch needed on the Brownies’ roster. Senior Tina Forgues, be- cause of injury, was not on the field, but contin- ued to be a part of the team. Although the loss of nine Seniors might affect next year's team, a lot of the new talent has ar- rived to spark the Brownie soccer tradition. Spirits Rising Throughout the year the 1986-87 Varsity Cheer- leaders, under the supervision of newly appointed Coach Gina Failed, showed great spirit and enthusiasm. The Senior tri-captains, Jennifer Brantley, Linda Cosby, and Bridget Crean guided the squad with their experi- ence and dedication. During the summer, the twelve members of the Var- sity team attended the NCA Cheerleading Camp at Camp Idyl wold. They received four superior ribbons and one excellent. The talented squad placed second out of approximately twenty squads in the Tournament of Excellence. They were also awarded with an NCA spirit stick, the greatest achievement a squad can re- ceive. Along with competitions, the girls continued to cheer in support of the various teams. The young team, consisting mostly of second year players, ended their division with a record of 9 7-1. The highlight of the season was the long awaited victory, 4-0, over East Longmeadow. The team was coached by Cindy Grieve and led by Senior Captains Judi Pignatare and Sa- mantha Doran. They took their squad into West- ern Mass, with total confidence, determination, and enthusiasm. The team consisted mostly of underclassmen including juniors Linda Porowski, Becky Runshaw, and Katie Wright. Sophomore contributors were Cindy Jochim, Shelly Morris, Karen McCarthy, Amy Schroeder, Tracy Scripo and Christina Morassi. With the return of numerous talented under- classmen, the 1987 Agawam Field Hockey team appears to be quite promising. just 2 more Kim Back Row L to R - Coach Grieve, Linda Porowski, Missy Barr, Kelli Trudel, Becki Runshaw, judi Pignatare, Katie Wright, Karen McCarthy. Nicole LaPalme, Coach Bruso The Glory of Tumbling The 1987 gymnastics team had a rough year. The team consisted of only seven members, making a high point gain difficult. Through a zealous effort, the scores increased as the season progressed. Coach Laura Bruso feels that considering the team size, they did well, although only winning one meet. They achieved 80 points, which is taken from the girls top four events. These are the balance beam, uneven bars, floor exercise, and the vault. Senior captain Maureen Burns, one of the top competitors, qualified for Western Mass. She agrees that they experienced a successful season. CROSS COUNTRY Going the Distance This year, the Agawam High School Boys's Cross Country team, led by Coach Young, had an overall record of 4-6. Their season was inspiring considering the number of mem- bers was low. Every runner came through during crucial mo- ments. Senior Co-Captains jon Corso and Nick Paquette led the team to outstanding victories. Jon Corso achieved suc- cess in setting four course records this year. He came in third in Western Mass, and upon qualifying for the State Meet he placed and outstanding fifteenth, which made him an all- stater. Junior contributors Joe Kosinski and Ralph Esempio and Sophomores Adam Moylan, Scott McCrystal and Jeremy Doran all demonstrated their running ability throughout the season. With the return of many excellent running talent, next years boys' Cross Country team has a promising outlook. One highlight of the season included a win over top ranked Commerce. But the teams win- ning streak was unfortunately ended when the Brownies were beaten by Putnum. Led by Senior co-captains Jim Hanson and Rob Vandergrift, the boys expect a good season. Strong performances and abilities were displayed by Nick Carra and Juniors Jeff Peterson, Jeff Reece, and Jim Lockwood. Sophomores John Serra and Chris Ollari also contributed greatly to the team. With strong co-captains Tricia Landry and Carolyn Jochim, the team feels ready for the Western Mass. Tournament. Leading the grapplers were Senior tri-captains Bob Altobelli, Tom King, and Bob Beaulieu. Other talented seniors included Jim Frasco, Cary Cerpovicz, Vin Pallotta, Rob Morassi, Joe Barrett, Mike Pedro, and Jeff O'Keefe. With guidance from coach Len Bruso and assistant Pete Sibilia, this season proved to be a successful one. The scoring talents of Seniors Dan Bryden, Jim Laudato, Lee Chrisanthopou- los and Junior Ricky Parolo helped decide the fate of the team. While sharing the goal tending duties with Tom Mesick, starting Sophomore goalie David Laudato led the Brownies' shutouts, against teams such as Westside and Longmeadow. Seniors Tony Young, Scott Pearson and Junior Denis Punch cut down the defensive angle to provide the Brownie line with opportunities to score. The loss of its Senior members may hurt the club, but things are looking bright for the quick and talented underclass- men. 134 Don't Trip! Agawam checks the opponent into the boards Good Job!!! Talented underclassmen were Juniors Shea Charles, John Welch, and Steve Hershowilz. Sophomore Michael Robbins and Freshmen Brian Shameklis helped the team rise above its competitors. Even with the lack of depth, the team spirit was high, and the future of the team looks very hopeful. 136 Jason eyes the finish. Jeff Smith goes for a 10. GIRLS SWIM TEAM Swimmers Ride the Waves The 1986-87 Girls' Swim Team opened their season under a newly appointed coach Laureen .Mahoney. The team experienced a frustrating start with a record at midseason of 1-4. Leading the team were Junior captains Anne Llewellyn and Chris David. Junior Anne Llewellyn and Sophomore Jennifer Scalise ranked All-Western Mass last year and with their performance this season they hope to capture the title once again. At midseason two records have been broken: Anne in the 100 yard back stroke and Junior Beth Maranzo in diving. The team consisted of eighteen members. On the girls side of the ski team in the top three slots were Senior Captain Lynne Waryasz and Seniors Leigh Whittaker, and Holly Lewis. The teams overall standing was improved by Seniors Jill Goss and Kim Ferris. Dave Pemberton, Don Hume, Jerry Allen, and Steve Milliken also contributed to the Brownies 10 victories. Sophomore Chris Ollari dominated his sec- ond singles slot, as did doubles teams consist- ing of co-captain Bob Coelin and Junior Jeff Dietschler and Seniors John Kovalsky and Cur- tis Wu. Senior co-captain Mike Jemiolo en- countered a rocky season, but continued to play his best throughout. After a long struggle the team made it to the WMASS semi-finals. Unfortunately, they were defeated by East Longmeadow. Returning Sophomores and Juniors are expected to strengthen the team for the upcoming season. 146 Taste good? Jay slices another one. GIRLS TENNIS It's a Tough Racquet The Agawam High School girls tennis team had a very competitive 1986 season. Mary Wolochowicz coached the girls who ended with a record of 4-8. The girls had some strong singles, such as Cindy Slate, who had gone undefeated since losing her first match of her Sophomore year. First singles Kathy Jemiolo ended her season 8- 4. She was defeated at the Western Mass Tournament by the number one seed from Palmer. Senior Joelle Dion held her own in sin- gles, and together with Anade Long in doubles they defeated Palmer in a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Even though they finished as the Division II runners-up they unfortunately didn't make the Western Mass Tournament.
