AGAWAM, MASS. 01001 created a dream in childhood world without a care; built a world in infancy astles pure and fair. outh we lived in fantasies world seemed quite complete; now we’ve outgrown these visions there are challenges we must eet. Our challenge rests upon the hill in the castle of our dreams With scattered clouds and rainbows surrounded by a stream. It represents our years of life and all that we've been through; It signifies our future and all that we must do. The castle holds the uncertainty we've felt along the way; It stores for us the strength we need to hold on one more day. This money was used to buy new uniforms which replaced the worn and out-of-date ones. Candy bars, wrapping paper, a dance, raffle tickets, and a pancake breakfast were among many fundraisers. Sponsers pledged money in a band-a-thon- twen- ty hours of continuous music played by all the bands in the school in addition to colorguard performances - which was held in February. Mr. Darcy Davis and Mr. Zachary Tileston worked hard this year to make the 84-85 Marching Mohawks one of the best Agawam bands ever. This year’s staff won first place at Columbia University, and in Holyoke, the Mirror received still more honors. These awards exemplify the hard work that goes into the Mirror. But the real accomplishment is the enjoyment that it brings to the students of Agawam High. Spot says. Mike, go to your closet.” 40 Say cheese.” Raise your hands if you’re sure. Jolece wonders. Advised by Mr. David Pulaski, the staff worked hard all year in order to meet important deadlines. Once again Mr. Pulaski’s comical personality allowed for an enjoyable year. Editor-in-Chief. Chris Burrows and Associate Editors. Sharon Kiddy and Karen Conway worked diligently to keep the staff together and under control. The Advertising Staff, under the direction of Tami Ferraiolo. did an excellent job of contacting the local businesses and encouraging them to purchase an ad in the Yearbook. Their strong motivation and forwardness helped to keep the cost of the yearbook down. The Business Staff, advised by Kelly McNamee. organized the finances along with planning the campaign for yearbook sales to underclassmen. Due to the staff's accuracy, this group proved to be very dependable. Led by director Tony Kunasek. the photographers devoted much of their time to catching the class of 'S5 in action. They took pictures of every function and activity existing at the high school. Literary and Layout staffs tackled the difficult task of choosing the appropriate pictures, words, and positions for every page of the yearbook. Directors Ed Korza and Lori Cowles kept the staffs working as a team to get the job done. The Sports Staff, led by Missy Copple. recorded statistics from every Fall. Winter, and Spring sport. They helped choose athletic pictures and wrote descriptive arti- cles about the individual teams for the yearbook. This year’s Sachem Staff had a very exciting year. Bob Wing and Al Ingham also had the honor of being chosen for All Western Mass. Although the football team had an unfortunate record, there was no lack of talent among the players. Senior Bob Wing, was the team's leading tackier from the defensive secondary, and while on offense, he acquired 1,146 yards and ten touchdowns which put him in the elite group of high school seniors attaining 1.000 yards. Junior talent included Ken Berard who gained 900 yards and quarterback Pete Saracino. The team was coached by Robert Sartwell and led by senior co-captains Ron Viens and Steve Oberle. They took their squad into every game with total confidence, determination, and enthusiasm. The soccer team suffered a loss of thirteen se- niors from last year’s team. This year, however, the Brownies will only lose three seniors: Ron Viens. Steve Oberle. and Todd Swenor. Throughout the season, the team suffered many hard knocks, in- cluding the loss of eleven seniors from last season, and the broken arm of their starting goalie. Trish Landry. The most frustrating hardship this year was that after meeting last year’s requirements for the Western Mass. Tournament, the requirements were changed. This change caused the girls to miss the tournament by one point. The team, led by senior captains Missy Sullivan and Cari Szabla. was one of the most spirited teams to have played for Agawam. The game which provided the team with their well deserved credit was the tie against West Springfield on the morning of October twentieth. With the loss of only five seniors, the squad has a hopeful outlook for next year. The team has many returning underclassmen which will provide next year's girls with strength and determination. The boys, determined to end the losing streak that was left upon them by previous seasons, practiced long and hard under second year coach Mr. Peter Kowalski. The team consisted of only one senior. SANTORE GORDON SCHEBEL KRISTEN SETTLE RALPH THARIN 127 I Mtmks As I wandered through the aging castle. I sorted my way through the dark chambers. In each passageway I was reminded of my fulfulling years at Agawam High School. The cobwebs were a symbol of the difficult, trying times; where the sun shone brightly. I drifted back to the exciting and carefree days. Enveloping memories overtook me as I was thrust under the castle's spell. We began creating our memories in the Fall of 1982 when we entered the castle as sophomores. High school life brought upon us many changes and adjustments. We were the newcomers and the upperclassmen made that known to us. A Career Day was held to help us prepare for our future lives. Suddenly, we had to decide what we wanted to be. because we were finally growing up. Ordering our class rings gave us a flicker of hope-were we really a part of this school? Maybe we just needed the security of knowing we would soon be more important. With the help of our classmates, we elected the Knights of the Round Table. Dan Christian was President; Jeff Wands was Vice President. Michelle Gray was Secretary; Chris Burrows was Treasurer, and Miss Mary Wolochowicz was our Class Advisor. With the help of these people, we began our mysterious quest in earnest. Participating in our first rally presented us with an opportunity to show the upper- classmen that we really had spirit after all. The Winter Olympics was an exciting new adventure which added to our growing enthusiasm. Attending our classmates' battles brought to us a feeling of honor as we cheered endlessly. The Girls Varsity Soccer Team delighted the fans by winning the Western Mass. Title. Following the girls’ victory was the Boys Track Team with their own Western Mass. Title. In the Pioneer Valley Cheerleading Tournament, the cheerleaders took first place, proving their enthusiasm for our castle. The Varsity Hockey Team showed their determination by winning their way to the finals, only to be defeated by Cathedral. Members of the Ski Team produced a second place win in the C Division. The Marching Band. Agawam’s own Court Pipers, earned first place at a musical band competition. The Jazz Band earned a Western Mass. Title, and the Show Choir and Jazz Rock Group took second place in the Court Entertainment Festivities in Montreal. The Mirror, due to the hard work of the staff, had another successful year; while the Unicorn, a literary magazine, began it’s first year of publication. During our first year in the castle, there were many world events that gave us feelings of both joy and sorrow. Barney Clark received the first artificial heart, an important step in medical history. Prince William, a new heir to the British throne, was born to Prince Charles and Princess Diana, while the war continued to rage in the Falkland Islands, taking many lives. The American film industry suffered a great loss with the death of Henry Fonda. The Tylenol murderer cast a shadow of fear over the American consumer. As our first year in the castle came to a close, we left the darkest and most difficult chambers behind us. and walked forward into the remaining passageways anticipating the adventures that were waiting for us in the upcoming years. We entered our junior year with an air of confidence, although still unsure of the secrets the castle held. Having been told of the difficulties of the upcoming year, we set our dreams within reach of our capabilities. If we made it through this year, we would be the one and only senior CLASS OF ’85. To guide us through our triumphs and failures, we selected Steven Oberle. President. Mike Lemay, Vice-presidents Michele Gray. Secretary! Ray Stillwell. Treasurer: and Mrs. Hamilton assumed the position of our class advisor. With the influence of these officers, we completed a successful and memorable year. In the hopes of attaining a more positive attendance record, a new system was created, causing much resentment among the students. We were only allowed nine absences per half- year. If we chose to exceed our limits, we were faced with loss of credit. Although this system proved to be undoubtedly successful, we students would have preferred a less harsh system. Responsibility for our actions was the lesson to be learned. Receiving our class rings inspired us to believe that graduation was a reality and not just a figment of our imaginations. We actually held a place in our noble castle. Excitement flourished as our football team presented their classmates with its first evening game. This seemed to add to the contentment of acceptance within our towering castle. In November, we experienced our first attempt at standardized testing. By taking the PSAT's. we were better prepared for the SAT's. whose results would later influence our college acceptances. Although the tests seemed intolerable, our efforts would pay off in the future. Along with the glitter came the calamities. We were faced with one of the worst floods in the history of Agawam. As the endless rains added to the intensity of the flood, panic spread rapidly and more and more people were forced to leave their homes. Millions of Americans tuned in to the television movie The Day After. It portrayed the realities of the aftermath of nuclear war. Would we be the victims of this man’s inhumanity to man? Across the seas. U.S. Marines were stationed in Beirut to help control unrest in the city within Lebanon. The morning of Sunday. October 3.1983. would never be forgotten in the minds of those who experienced the sorrow of the loss of our fellow Americans. Cabbage Patch Kids were born to the world, bringing out the gentleness in each of our hearts. Coleco’s real-to-life. dimpled dolls were the smile-spreaders” of the year. For the movie industry. Bill Murray led the Ghostbusters to ease our terrestrial fears. Gizmo and Billy of Gremlins brought happiness to all those who believed eating after midnight was dangerous. Yes. the pleasantries seemed endless. As our junior year came to a close, we discovered not only to celebrate our victories but also to learn from our defeats. We needed our past to continue our future. The thought of finally being dubbed SENIORS lit the torch that would shine us through our final tunnel. As we stepped into the light, we became heirs to the throne of our Castle. Now we were the Royalty and our superiority reigned. We knew that at the end of this year, a chapter of our lives would be coming to a close. There would be a new beginning and we were determined to make this our best year ever. Once again we appointed leaders, the last leaders of our class as a whole. We chose Bill Fortier, Presidenti Patti O'Donnell. Vice President; Angela Christy. Treasurer; and Missy Copple. Secretary. With the guidance of these people and our faithful class advisor. Mr. White, our final year at Agawam High created memories that would never be forgotten. These memories, perhaps, one day would be remembered with a tear as we reflected back to the carefree times within our Castle. Although we were the Royalty, we found that many responsibilities came with the possesion of our crowns. In October, we held a successful magazine drive which gave us the wealth needed to support the year’s activities. Along with making other important future decisions, having our Senior portraits taken made it official. Pulling together as a class we were invincible. Our Court Pipers really showed their talent as they placed first in a competition at Trumbull. Conn, and in the Columbus Day Parade. They also held a twenty hour Band-a-thon in order to raise funds for new uniforms. Their confidence and determination gave us the feeling that we were number one. and that we would never abdicate our thrones. Adding to the growing excitement, the wrestling team placed second in the Western Mass. Tournament hosted by Agawam. It seemed as though we were soaring higher and higher, and there was nothing that could stop us. The field hockey team made its debut in Agawam's sports scene in 1984. and added a new dimension to girls’ sports. As the year progressed, we attended our Kid Party. Semi-Formal, and Prom. These few hours were times for us to enjoy ourselves without having to worry about pressures of homework, filling out college applications, and scholarship deadlines. We were like the athletes at the 1984 summer Olympics. We were fighting our way to that gold medal, that final day of glory, graduation-a day when all eyes would be on us. if only for a moment, as we relished in our achievements. As we continued in our castle, the outside world was changing too. Ronald Reagan was re- elected as our President, break dancing had become more popular than ever, punk” seemed to be everywhere. Prince propelled himself to stardom in the Purple Rain , and the world cried for Ethiopia. Yes, the world was changing rapidly, but we were more concerned with ourselves as the drawbridge began to open to that final day. And then it was herel Graduation! The day we had spent twelve years of our lives working for had arrived. And yet it seemed to come too quickly. There was still so much more to be done and to be learned. We knew not what lay beyond the horizon of our futures, but we would learn in the years to come, just as we had done in the past. It seemed like an eternity had elapsed since we first entered our castle. But that was behind us. We now had a much larger castle to explore. We were all going in different directions. We knew that one day we would return together for a little while. Until then we must rely merely on memories, and only remain there in spirit, as we continue on with our lives knowing that a small part of us will always be in our castle. Agawam High School. Are we really the Class of '85. the people to whom this yearbook is dedicated, and who will soon go on our own separate ways to begin new lives? It seems like time is going by too fast, our drawbridge” is about to close, and soon the Class of '85 will be nothing more than a cherished memory. Through this yearbook, the 1985 Sachem staff has hoped to capture some of these memories, so in years to come, we can relive the days when we were Seniors. I would now like to take the opportunity to thank some very special people whose help was instrumental in creating the I9S5 Sachem. First of all. I would like to thank my two associate editors. Karen Conway and Sharon Kiddy, whose guidance, creativity, and hard work helped soothe my yearbook hangovers”. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the Sachem staff, especially those members who devoted the extra hours necessary to meet important deadlines. Our yearbook representative. Don Lendry. deserves much gratitude for always being willing to lend a helping hand. Most of all. I send sincere thanks to Mr. David Pulaski, whose expertise, sense of humor, and dedication have gained my com- plete admiration and praise. Thank you. Pulaski . To the Class of '85. may you succeed in all you strive for. and may you reach the happiness you undeniably deserve. With the very best of wishes. CJlAUltuM.
