Junior class officers in 1982-83 were Steve Jury-president, Thomas Han- son- vice-president, Karen Albano-secretary, and Lena Kozloski as treasurer. They did not have a class advisor until several weeks into the year when Guidance Counselors Elaine Bellico and Jane Williams volunteered. The major highlight of the year was, of course, when the ‘‘Ring Man” came. This game the underclassmen proof that they were on their way to the top! There was also the very successful Christmas dance, held on December 17. 1982. All in all, the class of 1984 proved, that with their rowdiness and excite- ment, as well as personal motivation, this Junior class would be the best. 37 Christopher Albano Joanna Albano John Albano Karen Albano Thaisa Alechny Carlos Arbelaez Yolanda Arbelaez Ronald Augusti Glen Bailey Douglas Bailie I suppose you expect me to believe that! It is now an international organization started by World War II ambulance drivers. The Agawam chapter, of 1982-83 fostered two special students. Heidi Nachtigall from West Germany, and Mats Karlsson from Sweden. Many activities were planned including an all-day party with skating and a hay ride. Also scheduled were fund-raisers such as parking cars for the Big E. and a February dance. An AFS weekend was held at Agawam for all foreign exchange students in the surrounding area. AFS enables students of all grades to meet new people, visit other countries, learn about foreign nations, and have fun while doing it. This fine club was headed by Industrial Arts teacher Mr. David Hobson. Elected officers were President Gen Seidell. Vice-president Sharon Cestari, Secretary-Treasurer Janet Mallory, and Sergeant at Arms Hope Moore. Mr. Hobson with members of AFS. AFS hard at work. Sweden exchange student Mats Karlsson. Unicorn, under the supervision of English teacher. Mr. Law- rence O’Brien, was introduced to Agawam High students during the 1982-83 school year The purpose for the publication was to allow talented students to see their creative work in print. Voluntary applications by Agawam High School students were used as the basis for se- lection of the Unicorn staff. Judged by a sub- mission of creative work, a staff of thirteen members was chosen. Gary Rescigno was desig- nated editor-in-chief, Debbie Marai, associate editor, and Michelle Duval as art editor. Co- editors for layout were Don Lancour and Colin Wells. The eight regular staff members consist- ed of Andy Bird. Michelle Early, Joanne Ma- son. Tony Mastromatteo, Joe Maruszczak, Joe Potter, and Lynn Ziegert. This staff held meet- ings every Wednesday and successfully pro- duced winter and spring issues. This non-profit organization was aided by Mr. Collins, a graphic arts teacher, who generously printed all issues of the magazine. The success of this organization depended on the work sub- mitted to the staff by Agawam High English students. Mr. O'Brien observes the action. 47 AGAWAM The Vocal Ensemble, directed by Mr Stephen Files, underwent several changes during this past year. The group became two groups, a Jazz singing group, and a Show- choir (dancing slnging) group Whether a singer or dancer, every member of Vocal Ensemble performed in the Showcholr division, but only a few of the Showchoir members had performed in the Jazz division The Vocal Ensemble planned many competition trips which re- quired several fund-raisers. These included a summer car wash, pan- cake breakfast, calendar drive, chocolate Santa drive, and the non- stop M M drive The money raised from those fund raisers was for their trip to the University of New Hampshire, where they defended their first place title in showchoir. held for two years in a row. They also needed money for an important and exciting competition in Montreal, during the spring. The group unified their efforts on Thursday nights, under the direc- tion of choreographer Nancy Rawson. to prepare for the grueling and long awaited competitions. The Agawam Jazz band, directed by Mr. Zachary Tileston, con- sisted of many enthusiastic and talented members. The Jazz Band performed many times for the community at such places as the Holyoke Mall and Chez Josef. Because of the talent of the group, they were paid for their performances and in the future will be featured at the Chez Josef House of Banquets as a feature performing group for different functions. It was through these funds that the band was capable of planning competitions for the spring. These plans included a trip to the University of New Hampshire and a trip to Montreal. The officers of the band included David Jagadowski as President, Joe Curran as Vice-President, Kim Stoll as Treasurer, and Cheryl Przeszlo as Secretary. It was these talented officers and practicing every other day that led to the band’s success. Mr. Tileston directs the band. .--52L CHORALE This year, the Agawam Chorale, advised by Mr. Stephen Files, was composed of 65 talented sophomores, juniors, and seniors. This large group was guided under the direction of Dar- lene Beaulieu- President, Dan White- Vice-President, Beth Phillips-Secretary, and Bob Uschmann- Treasurer. In order to complete their competition plans, such as a trip to Montreal, the group was in need of several success- ful fund-raisers. Among these were a summer car wash, calendar drive, pancake breakfast, chocolate Santa drive, and the endless selling of M M’s. The Chorale has always been a successful group. Not only do they win awards for Agawam, (they placed first last year in Newport, Rhode Island) they are successful in pre- senting the traditional Vaudeville Show each year. This show enables many of the talented Chorale members, as well as other music students, to display their hard work and talent in the spring each year. The 1982-83 Agawam Chorale The Chorale officers: Bob Uschmann. treasurer. Beth Phillips, secretary; Dan White, vice-president; Darlene Beaulieu, president. BAND AND COLORGUARD The awesome Agawam Band and Colorguard were kept very busy during the course of the year. In mid summer, the long, grueling practices were begun in order to perfect their parade and field show routines for competition, as well as for football games. Mr. Darcy Davis, along with Drum Majors Eileen Paleologopoulos. Joanne Boucher, and Kim Stoll, worked diligently to achieve the success of a very rewarding season. Being involved in the Columbus Day Parade (once again), holding their own Band Festival, and competing in Stratford and Wakefield, kept the enthusiastic members busy throughout the year. The Agawam “Marching Mohawks were also honored when asked to perform at half time for the Basketball Hall of Fame game, which was held at the Springfield Civic Center and broadcasted nationwide. The members were looking forward to the long-awaited spring trip, which took place in Montreal. Canada. Joe Curran as President, Kim Stoll as Vice-President, Fred Harpin as Secretary, Colleen Conway as Treasurer, Merritt Hopping as Manager, and Kathy Wojcik as Librarian, all joined together in the coordination of several productive band pro- jects. These projects included a very successful dance, candy drive, and Christmas paper sale. The dedicated colorguard, with their colorful and exciting field routines added an invigorating atmosphere to the band. The rifle captains, Donna Ferraiolo and Renee Lacour guided the talent of the rifle line through their spectacular perfor- mances. Captains, Jodi Anderson and Karla Mancini produced outstanding effects with their Junior colorguard. While learning the basics of acting, the class also experimented with production, lighting, stage make up, and other facets of theater. From all of this, the theater class was able to learn the ups and downs of acting while basically having a good time. Just cloaning around. Caught in the act!!! 52 “Hey there .! FRENCH CLUB Some of the dedicated French Club members The French Club, under the supervision of Mrs. Ann Marie Gould, held their meetings after school to plan activities which would involve their knowledge of the French language. Elected as President and Secretary was Debbie White, Vice-President Nancy Rawson, and Treasurer Jean Nicole. The officers aided the other members in planning such activities as a sleigh ride and a cultural food day,” involving many French delicacies. The highlight of the club's activities this year was a planned trip to Montreal. The members planned sight-seeing tours of museums and cathe- drals, as well as a sampling of many French restaurants, where they would have a chance to employ their French vocabulary with expertise. This year also marked the first year of the French National Honor Society. French students who have maintained “A” averages in French, while keeping at least a “B average in all other majors, are eligible for membership. Although not affiliated with the French club, many dedicated French students were members of both clubs. S3 Shedding light on the subject FUTURE SECRETARY CLUB The Future Secretary Club, led by Mrs. Carol Grady, helps interested students learn more about the secretarial profession. In addition to their meet- ings, they also visited surrounding colleges such as S.T.C.C., Bay Path Junior College, and Holyoke Community College, to provide new insight in their prospective careers. The officers of the club this year were Debbie Twarog as President. Michelle Theriault as Vice- President, Lisa Laudato as Secretary, and Lisa DiTo- maso as Treasurer. The fifteen members of the club were also involved in different fund-raisers for a Sen- ior scholarship. These included a very successful bake sale and a car wash. Sheer concentration! Members pay close attention. Really, Mrs Grady?!?! You've got to be kidding'! JUNIOR CLASSICAL I FAOI IF Say CHEESE' Under the direction of Mrs. Ann Marie Gould, the Junior Classical League held its meetings during Latin classes to discuss possible activities for the year. The group performed under the guidance of its officers: President Bev Johnson, Vice-President Mike Lemay, Secretary Lynn Fratini, and Treasurer Li2 Doran. This year the members planned on such activities as Christmas caroling at the Shriner's Hospital, where they spread good cheer to many. You're falling apart Karen “Slop moving! Mr . Gould initiating Lynn into the Junior Classical League. JL. LIBRARY STAFF The 1982-83 library staff was a very responsible group of students, who, under the direction of Mrs. Charlotte Shimel and Mrs. Catherine O’Keefe, kept account of the library’s books and magazines. These sophomores, juniors, and seniors are so dedicated that they take time away from their work to do whatever needs to be done. Whenever a crisis arose, the staff was there. With Mrs. Shimcl’s injury and with the collapse of one of the magazine book cases, the staff was once again able to show it’s reliability and dedication by pitching in at a time of crisis. Our eager personnel at work. Just ask . they know! A part of the cheerful staff. 55 AS SCHOOLS MATCH WITS The As Schools Match Wits Team of 1982-83 season met twice a week under the direction of English teacher, Mr. Lawrence O'Brien, to polish skills needed to compete on the television show, which airs every Saturday at 7:30. Senior team members included Dale Patnaudc, Colin Wells, and Don Lancour Both Dale and Don competed last year, while Colin was the team's alternate Juniors Tony Mastromatteo and Joe Marusrceak were new members of the T V. team. Acting as a junior varsity were a variety of sophomore hopefuls. By helping the team conduct matches similar to those on the actual show, these underclassmen gained the valuable experience necessary for them to make the team next year. Practices were limited to twice a week: one day for taking notes on such competition categories as General Knowledge. Literature. Sci- ence. Geography. History, and. a new category. Film and Theater; as well as another day for practice matches. Prior to actual competition, however, practices increased. These extra practices helped to prepare them for the tough matches. The 1982-83 team looked hopeful. By winning three preliminary matches, the team hoped to make the playoffs and beat last year's record Members attentively listen to Mr O'Brien NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Mr. Cavallo with the members of the Board of Directors. The 1982-83 members of the National Honor Society were guided by Mr. Paul Cavallo, President Maria Kozloski, Vice- President Mary Walsh, Treasurer Debbie White, Secretary Nancy Rawson, and the ten senior members of the NHS Board of Directors. Initiation into the society for juniors and new senior mem- bers was conducted after the third term grades of the 1982-83 year had been examined. Requirements were an average of 85 and the involvement of these students in an extra- curricular activity, such as a sport, church organization, or work. This year’s officers organized a fund raiser of pens and exacted dues of three dollars a year for all members to partial- ly subsidize a trip to New York. Also the senior members planned to dine at an elite restaurant at the end of the year, to celebrate their hard-earned academic success at Agawam High School. 57 Sure Lori, whatever you say. Members discussing possible fund raisers. Hopefully these pens will sell fast! MIRROR The 1982-83 Mirror Staff, under the direction of editor Colin Wells, created an award winning paper. Placing first in the Columbia Scholastic Press Associ- ation, the staff has kept up the paper’s reputation. At Holyoke Community College, the paper added The Outstanding Newspaper and Best Sports Story awards to their already impressive showcase. Working for much of the year without their advisor Mrs. Martin, this year’s staff has indeed accomplished many things. Its success is due to Don Lancour, Lynne Zeigert, Gary Rescigno, Michael Chagnon. Gina Lynch, and Beth Johnson, along with all other Mirror staff members. Also, to help sharpen the group’s talents, staff members attended a Press Forum at Holyoke Com- munity College and a conference at Columbia Univer- sity. This staff deserves much recognition for its news- paper. It not only entertains the reader, but it also is very informative. 58 What do you think of this? The members review new material DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS The Dungeons and Dragons is a club advised by Mr. Wilson, which included over a dozen enthusiastic members. These members, assuming the roles of imaginary charac- ters. such as elves, thieves, wizards, and clerics adventured into the imaginary world of castles and dungeons. Dungeon Masters, with the aid of spells and swords, created imaginary worlds and went on adventures where they encountered dragons, demons, and many different evil beings. This exciting and dramatic game was held after school on Tuesdays. There were no highlights in the year, but the members, matching wits and challenging opponents, had a fun year. That's fascinating!! Tell me about your ideas, Andy! $9 MODEL CONGRESS The Model Congress is a group of students under the direction of Mr. John Ferranti that is interested in teaching students about the legislative procedures of the United States. Meeting every two or three weeks, the members studied and practiced for their annual trip to A.I.C. Under Bill Landry- Chairman, the members presented a Pac-Man Bill to show their skill in legislative procedures. Though this group was small in number, those involved in it were ready and willing to put up with the many frustrations involved in putting together a good presentation in January. Advisor. Mr. Ferranti, working with the students. OFFICE OF STUDENT AFFAIRS The Office of Student Affairs (O.S.A.) is a student organi- zation made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Under the direction of Mr. Albert Baggetta and Director Kim Drowns, the O.S.A. sponsored the annual carnation sale and Easter contest. They also organized the Winter Olympics, an activity for the entire school. With the rest of their time, this busy group also elected a state representa- tive for Student Government Day and chose the recipient of the Good Citizen Award. All money made from this beneficial organization went towards student scholarships for Agawam High students. “Boy. do I have an idea! 60 Mr Baggetta's kid ! Like I don't think o!! PROM COMMITTEE How's this sound’ The Prom Committee, under the direction of Mrs. Schil- ling-Nordal, met after school to organize this year’s Junior- Senior prom. The committee consisted of: Seniors Jodi Anderson and Debbie Beaure gard; Juniors Larry Manning and Lisa Herd; and Sophomores Gna Letel ller and Jay Duval. These six students attended school committee meetings, held every other Tuesday, to discuss important issues concerning the student body These students held meetings on their own. prior to the school committee gatherings, to discuss any proposals that would be brought forth before the board. Gina Letellier was able to attend every meeting to take notes, which would be discussed by the school advisors at a later date This type of committee was formed at the request of the State of Massachusetts to ensure that the civil rights of high school students would be protected. In order to find the complaints of the student body, the Student Advisory Committee devised a questionairc. This gave students the chance to reveal their grievances to their student representatives. The results proved that Agawam High School students in 1982-83 were a contented bunch of kids, who were satisfied that their rights were being observed by the high school administration. It did not take long before we realized that there were no elevators on board. What did the Senior crew members think? That we were naive? (So maybe we all bought one or two.) We began getting involved in everyday activities. Four of our shipmates were brave enough to venture out into the rough waters and take the helm. Navigated by Miss Mary Wolochowicz. our commanding officers were Captain Colin Wells. Co-Captain Steve Young. First Mate Debbie White, and Purser Raclene Davis. Many events and awards during our first year propelled us through the briny, turbulent waters, and inflated our pride. The As School Match Wits Team won the championship in 1981, and Model Congress was presented “Best Bill at A.I.C. Our mighty Marching Mohawks had a great season, placing first in the Columbus Day Parade, while the Vocal Ensemble and the newly created Showchoir won its first award: The 1981 Outstanding Showchoir.” If these accomplishments were not enough to heighten our school spirit, and liven our sojourn, the Cheerleaders reemphasized this aspect when they took first place in the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Cheerleading Competition. While, we as a single body, were experiencing happiness and success, the world’s affairs did not treat us as kindly. Proposition 2xh was voted in, filling many of our commanders with the uneasiness of job security, and our sports teams, and various organizations, with hesitation concerning their budgets for the upcoming season. We were forced to raise money for budget cuts by means of M M’s, Reese’s Peanut Cups, and calenders. Everywhere we turned, chocolate permeated the air. much to the dismay of figure conscious people. To add to the budget slashes, Ronald Reagan was elected as our fortieth President. There was much sorrow and shock when the shooting of John Lennon on December 8, 1980, and the death of our beloved principle. Mr. David Theodorowicz in August, 1981, were made known. The nation did rejoice, however, as the fifty-two American hostages were released on January 20, 1981, after 444 days of captivity, which prompted a nation to prayers, and an expression of love through a flood of yellow ribbons. They defined and reemphasized the meaning of freedom and liberty, which we, as Americans, hold so dear. The same year saw the eyes of the nation turn to their television sets to witness the exchange of wedding vows between Prince Charles of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer in a Royal Wedding, which sparked romanticism in the hearts of many, and rekindled the traditional values of love and marriage. With all these events filling the first leg of the journey with fond memories, the year passed by in what seemed a fortnight. Relieved that we had the first, trying year behind us, we eagerly looked toward the second year of our voyage with many expectations. Our travels continued, and we as Juniors embarked on new and mysterious waters. With the onset of our eleventh year, noted to be the hardest academically, we actually saw paradise begin to materialize in front of our eyes. Our graduation was in sight, and it became less difficult to bear the stretch of academic tests, such as the PSAT’s, ASVAB’s and others, if we so chose to take them. The ringman came in October and ingrained the idea of graduation into our hopes. We had gained our sea legs, a sense of pride in our accomplishments, and importance as young adults. The end seemed so close, yet we all realized the seemingly endlessness of the path that would lead us there. We continued our navigation under the direction of Captain Boo Smith. Co-Captain Steve Young, First Mate Joanne Piliero, and Purser Colin Wells, who were guided by Mrs. Mary Charest. They organized a successful Christmas ornament sale, whose proceeds went to defray the cost of the Junior-Senior Prom of 1982. The prom, held on April 22. 1982, utilized the theme “Endless Love.” to inspire the dreams of young couples, and was again held at Chez Josef. The sports teams were extremely successful during the course of the year. Their successes included the Football Team's great victory over Westside on Thanksgiving Day, and the Boy’s Varsity Basketball Team’s claim of the B Division Championship title. On the side of entertainment, the talented Showchoir placed first at the University of New Hampshire for the second year in a row, hopefully looking to maintain their title in the future. The band and colorguard again coveted first place in the Columbus Day Parade. The month of April wreaked its vengeance upon us as we ran into troubled waters, due to a freak blizzard. For three consecutive days, activities were dampened. This unseasonal weather did not seem strange because it fit into the array of events that were happening in the world around us. The crisis occurring in Poland proved a time of tough endurance for the Polish people, for it was not stabilizing. Lech Walesa, the Polish Solidarity Union Leader, proclaimed a refusal to the subjection of martial law, imposed on his workers. The journey continued and we watched the days pass. Navigating by a seven day period and a six day week, we took orders from the many captains commanding us. The days passed by rather quickly, carrying us over gales, reefs, and other tremendous obstacles in our way. At the end of the Junior year, we set our sights on what was to come. With two-thirds of the adventure completed, the last and best part remained. We saw time pass, and as we looked into the horizon, we were anxious and curious about what we were about to endeavor. Our voyage was near completion. The fall of 1982 invigorated our lives with a sense of power. We were Seniors! Oh, the feeling of domination and invincibility were overwhelming. The school appeared different, there were no more unfamiliar classes, or underclassmen jitters. We were it, and our attitude and enthusiasm proved it. Proposition 2Vi remained a heavy burden, creating money problems, but the traditional magazine drive helped alleviate the burden. We were guided with the help of Senior officers Captain Mary Moreau. Co-Captain Richard Noyes, First Mate Linda Desmarais, and Purser Jody Dennis who filled our last leg of the voyage with many entertaining activities. Craziness arrived on certain Fridays, which were designated Senior hat. tie, and punk Days. Then silliness was introduced with the Kid Party, on December 10, 1982, our last shot to partake in childish antics. Finally, realizing we all could be sophisticated when we tried, the Valentines Day Semi-Formal held at Shaker Farms, and the Prom allowed us the perfect chance to prove this. We were on our way to becoming adults. The Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team made us beam with pride and patriotism when they beat Chicopee High School to win their first Western Mass. Title. The boys' team successfully maintained our spirit when they took the championship for their division. The transitional move from B Division Basketball Champs to A Division obscurity was a tough move, but one we could withstand. In winter, our Hockey Team kept us winners. They maintained their status in two exciting games with Cathedral. They won one, and tied the second, all while fighting to maintain their first place standing. Along with these successes, the Varsity Cheerleaders again placed first in the Pioneer Valley Competition in January. The journey became tough as we underwent strenuous testing, for instance, the SAT’s, ACH’s, etc., which would decide our next adventure. Still undecided concerning our careers, the choice emphasized our insecurity. We thought high school was forever. We were soon to realize otherwise, when Collegiate Cap and Gown Co. arrived to take our measurements for our graduation cap and gowns. We broke from the traditional colors of orange and brown to elevate us to a more formal look with white and brown. Graduation was so close, but yet so far. As we prepared to fully enter into it. the world around us was falling apart. Gloom had replaced optimism as unemployment neared 11%, as the recession deepened, and as businesses and banks failed. Wars filled the TV screens of our last summer vacation, first in the Falkland’s, later in the Middle East. The gloom was briefly broken by the captivation of the world with E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial. Still, we had cause to worry about the future. Tragedies seemed to hit us close at home when we lost a beloved American Princess, Grace of Monaco, and American film actor Henry Fonda. We realized our mortality and life seemed more dear. The tragic Tylenol murders, motivated by a senseless killer, stunned the nation in a new and peculiar fashion. Life, we realized, was precious. We became more cautious, and learned to enjoy the life we were living. As we were preparing to board for our voyage through life, we couldn’t help but feel that our excursion through high school had ended all too soon. Those three years were the most difficult yet and most exciting years of our life. Where did they go? They were locked inside many memories which we will cherish forever. i %, «-rs ' m %u ' JrQv ,'M' L cyi' 4 8up fedujt a. 9° a 3 S uo , i V ft C 3yo _X ' fJ OMJUX rfs iuLt A? 9 ?%€o r A- . „CT , , f?kr,rJU All w) JJCH_6 7ty°' Su£ fea tatHXX. 9° 2 . v 3 w w -• . There is a peaceful spot in the woods where I go to unwind and relax. I follow a meandering path through the thickly settled forest until I find my special spot in a clearing under a sweet-smelling pine tree. As I sink on the spongy earth below me. I feel the slight prickle of the fallen pine needles. I listen to the crackle of the cool stream flowing near by and the high- pitched songs of the wild birds over head. Almost tasting the bittersweet, fresh air I think to myself, “I really can’t find anything more relaxing or satisfying than Nature.” Lisa Bardsley MEMORIES Lisa, only yesterday we laughed. As in our theme, we sailed through our high school years. On our voyage throughout Agawam High School, we hit many rough waters but these were soon forgotten among the memorable events and happenings. The Seniors of ’83 proved themselves to be a class of total distinction, creating valuable memories to be cherished forever. In composing this year's Sachem, our main objective was to capture lasting impressions of those moments we will soon wish to relive. I would like to commend the entire Sachem staff on their hard work and dedication, which allowed the Sachem yearbook to contain for the first time, a color senior section. They continued to work diligently, always being prepared for pressuring deadlines. Special thanks also go to my Associate Editors, Jodi Anderson, Linda Desmarais, and Richard Noyes, for their exceptional assistance. I would also like to express my appreciation for the help given us by Mr. Don Lendry, our yearbook representative. Most importantly, I find myself at a loss for words with which to extend my deepest appreciation to Mr. David Pulaski. His inner strength, advice, and understanding are a constant source of motivation. To describe this man in one word, that word would be dedicated.” Thank you, Mr. P. To the class of '83, best wishes for a successful life, and through happiness, may you achieve all your goals. With hopes for a new beginning, Diane Palazzi Editor-inChief 208 Mr P and Di - in the beginning it seemed so easy. But, little did I know of the trials and tribulations of being a yearbook staff editor. AGAWAM PUBLIC LIBRARY 3 8120 0009 5503 1 For Reference Not to be taken from this library
