Text from Pages 1 - 240 of the 1982 volume:

The day breaks. The sun moves over the horizon. School begins The bell is heard. And there; moving slowly. Is a man and his horse So alone, in a place unknown to him. And we, the civilized ones. Enter new classes, unknown to us. But we know, as the cowboy knows That at the end of this new experience Will be an understanding Perhaps an accomplishment. The participation and enthusiasm of the members can account for the success of the club. Agawam High has had the honor of hosting three foreign exchange students this year. The friendly smiles and warm personalities of Peter Lindsay (New Zealand), Toshiaki Goscki (Japan), and Amelia Ri- quclmc (Paraguay) brightened the halls of the school. Robin Vogel, the club’s President, with the assistance of Vice- President Heather Roberts, and Secretary Martha Leary, organized various parties and the activities for the weekend and short-term exchanges. The club scheduled fund raisers such as a school dance, parking cars for the Big E. and a Pancake Breakfast under the super- vision of the advisor, Mr. Hobson. Three returnees who lived and studied abroad this past year were David Jenks (Colombia), Susan Conway (Spain), and Kathy Curran (Belgium). AFS ... an international organization enabling students to make new friends, learn about foreign countries, and provide memorable and exciting experiences abroad. Heather Roberts. Martha Leary. Mr. Dave Hobson, and Robin Vogel Peter, Amelia, and Toshiaki AUDIO VISUAL AIDES The Audio Visual Club, under the guidance of Mr. L'Hcurcux, aided many teachers with AVA equipment. The AVA equipment was used to en- hance classroom curriculum. The students did not meet as a group, but on a scheduled basis each day. According to advisor. Mr. L’Heurcux. “This organization is successful and well worth all that we pul into it.” Senior members this year included Scott Rain- villc. Donald Webb. Mary Arsenault. Jeff White. Bryan Kinsley, and Mike Flood. Where do you warn this? l.'Hcurcux Crew. ART CLUB The Art Club met twice a month with advisor. Miss Drewnowski. to give the members opportuni- ties to experiment in various art mediums. There were four active members in the club Rhonda Martineau, Laurie Montefusco. Justine Chriscola, and Kris Lctcndre. The casual atmosphere enabled the girls to better develop their art skills. Mrs. Drew- nowski planned trips to different art galleries and shows so the girls could view many different artists’ work. An artist's tool — her hands AS SCHOOLS MATCH WITS The 1981-82 season marked Mr. Lawrence O'Brien's sixth year of advising the As Schools Match Wits Team. He was assisted by Mr. Joseph Zabielski. who aided the team in its study of history and philosophy. The team practiced twice a week to prepare for the As Schools Match Wits” television program. One practice consisted of gathering knowledge in academic areas and different aspects of trivia, the other was a practice match, imitating the confrontations that take place on the show. Tim Ryan led the impressive panel which consisted of senior. Chuck Hastings, juniors. Dale Patnaude and Don Lancour. and alternate Colin Wells. Defending the 1981 As Schools Match Wits Cham- pionship proved to be very difficult for the team. The Agawam Squad suffered a disappointing loss to Chicopee High School in the first match of the season. The team is now preparing underclassmen hopefuls for next year. Promising members include Tony Mastromatteo. Joe Maruszczak, and Steve Fisher. The experience of return- ing juniors and sophomores make Agawam very optimis- tic for the 1982-83 season. Chuck and Don wait for the next question. 40 Captain Tim Ryan Is he serious? BUSINESS CLUB The Business Club, also known as the Student Store, had a very successful year. Under their new advisor. Mr. Altobclli, the members promoted many new items. Hooded sweatshirts, school supplies, baseball shirts, pens, pencils, and plenty of food were sold before school and during lunches. The officers of the Business Club were: president. Dede Moore; vice-president. Kris Riblett; secretary, Beth Johnson; and treasurer, Michelle Mills. Many people found the Student Store was a great conve- nience to them whenever they needed school supplies. With its added variety of munchics. a daily trip to the Student Store became a habit for many. Mr. White Supcrlcacher!! Mary is swarmed with customers. CHORALE The Agawam High School Chorale, under the direction of Mr. Stephen Files, was composed of 82 members who were chosen for their vocal ability. These arc a few of the popular cries the 120 members of the AHS Band and Colorguard heard from their Drum Majors Alisa LaFrancis and Anna Greguoli. The band, led by Mr. Darcy Davis and Mr. Zachary Tilcston. had a very successful 1981 fall season. Faced with tough competition from their arch-rivals Chico- pee Camp and Chicopee High School, our “Marching Mo- hawks placed first in the Columbus Day Parade for the sixth consecutive year! The band practiced for many long hours throughout the fall in order to perfect the field show that won them a third place trophy in the second annual Music Bowl at UMass. Andy Lester, band president, coordinated many band activi- ties. With assistance from Ellen Fanning; vice-president. Joe Curran; secretary. Alisa LaFrancis; treasurer, and Barry Wu; manager. Andy set up a special Band and Colorguard Dance. The Colorguard also added its spirit and talent to help make the season successful. The members of the club also participated in AHS’s annual observance of Language Week. Members share a laugh. Bon jour” Debbie gives her own opinion I second the rnonon FUTURE SECRETARIES The main goal of the Future Secretaries Club is to help students develop a better understanding of the secretarial profession. The stu- dents held a Halloween Party in October, and enjoyed a pizza dinner at Canta Napoli's on another occasion. The Junior Classical League is open to all students enrolled in Latin class. This year the organization worked without an advi- sor, and did a great job in planning events, learning, and having fun. Studying is a must! Utter concentration! Ms. Shimcl and Mrs. O'Keefe directed the 1981-82 Library Staff. The students on the staff came into the library during study periods and helped by replacing returned books to the shelves, checking out books, and assisting students in finding reading material. The staff helped to make the library a good place to study as well as a great source of information. Once again, the AHS library was the backbone of the school. LIBRARY STAFF Oh my God Mrs.Shimcl!!!’ Our motto Satisfaction Guaranteed’ 47 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Under the guiding hand of Mr. Paul Cavallo. the National Honor Society strove to promote leadership, citizenship, and scholastic achievement at AHS. With all the headaches and responsibilities came a deep feeling of contentment when the staff and advisor found that the yearbook had been completed. IN MEMORY OF STEVE SANTINELLO I know that death is hard to believe, but we all have to face when our loved ones leave. It's a great sorrow for the ones left behind, but Steve is at ease which we all come to find. Heaven is a place where you feel no pain, where everything is beautiful and you need no name. He was only seventeen, not quite a man. but he found his peace when God took his hand. Steve won't be with us in life form anymore, but his soul will live on forever more. God gave us Steve for a very short time it seems, but his life was laid out for God to receive. We just wish it didn't have to come so soon, for his life was only beginning to bloom. But there is no need for tears or grief, his life is gone, but the memories will not cease. I.ifc is a gift we all have received, but when God calls on us we all have to leave. No matter how much sorrow or pain it will bring, life will go on until we're together again. So remember Steve with love and affection, and be happy for him. he has found God's protection.
