AS SCHOOL MATCH WITS Mr. O'Brien was the advisor of the three seniors and two juniors who made up the 1980-81 As School Match Wits Team. With senior Todd Rovclli as captain, senior members. Bob Lancour and Mark Morrison, and junior members Tim Ryan and alternate Roger Olewinski. the team had plenty of brain- power behind it. These five final members were chosen through a grueling process of elimination. The team met twice a week with the goal of winning on the T.V. show “As schools Match Wits.” Last year’s team made it to the semi-finals and this year they practiced diligently with the intention of winning the 1981 Championships. Their after-school classes covered quick recall, trivia knowl- edge. and factual information in all academic areas — certainly not an easy task for the average student. However, the ASMW team did not consist of “average” students, and the school had reason to be proud of these students who had that extra motivation and desire to learn. As we go to press, the team was well on its way to another successful season by soundly defeating Loomis Chaffee private school. You're smiling Todd! Faithful advisor. This year the group, led by “sergeant” Darcy Davis and Mr. Tiles- ton. practiced long and hard with two sessions during the summer as well as practices that continued into the dark evening hours. All this was not done in vain, for out of eight bands in their class, the group placed third at the first annual Music Bowl at UMass. Placing higher than many area schools, the Marching Mohawks beat South Hadley for the first time in eight years. Caron LaCour. band president, led the band in major projects. She was assisted by Lori Richardson, vice-president: Linda Shcffer. secre- tary; Alisa LaFrancis. treasurer; Evelyn Chase, librarian; and Dan Mcthot. manager. Drum Majors Scott Mackin and Sandy Nascem- beni set the tempo. The Colorguard added an extra special flare this year, as they braved the unusually frigid temperatures, performing superbly. Sen- ior captain Debi Maccy led the rifles in various routines, the most remembered being Bald Mt. Captains of the Junior Colorguard were Beth Golemo and Donna Ouellette, who commanded the girls with spunk and determination. Sophomore Majors. Michelle George, president; senior, Beth Johnson, vice-president; senior. Beth Chase, secretary; and ju- nior, Dawn Gladu, treasurer, led the initiation and installation service in January. A very successful year drew to a close as Agawam’s future secretaries, along with their advisor. Mrs. Buchanan, attended the Springfield chapter of the NSA dinner meeting in the spring. Off to earn more money for FSA. Nobody will ever know! Mrs. Buchanan tells the girls what it is like to work in an office. The 1980-81 FSA was a very enthusiastic group. LIBRARY STAFF The 1980-81 library staff found themselves with plenty of work to do. With the opening of the new library, new books had to be counted, filed, and shelved into order. Joining the staff was Ms. Govoni. who helped Ms. Shimcl and Mrs. O’Keefe to keep the year trouble free and enjoyable for all. Several students volunteered their own time to help the librar- ians with their job. which could, at times, become suprisingly hectic. Keeping a library full of students quiet w as no easy task! But those students studying or working in the library found the librarians helpful, the shelves full of information, and in turn, their work sessions productive. They proved themselves to be an important part of AHS once again. Ms. Govoni demonstrates skills. Just a part of our large library staff. MATH LEAGUE The “brains of Agawam High School shifted into high gear with the Math League again this year. The seven member league competed in Math contests with 18 area schools. Return- ing seniors Todd Rovclli. Kevin Ryan, and Mark Morisson provided a strong backbone for juniors and sophomores Dale Patnaude, Charles Hastings, Jim Sherry and Rodger Olewinski. I sing deductive reasoning and tactics gained from these events, the members will accept and conquer future challenges. I hope I’m right! Mr. Burke advises the Math League. VOCAL ENSEMBLE Under the direction of Mr. Files, the Vocal Ensemble was taught to perform contemporary and jazz style music. It was open to anybody in the 10th thru 12th grade level and meetings were held during classroom hours. One requirement of the course was an audition, (necessary for ensemble membership). The vocal group participated in many festivals during the year including the UN H jazz festival, the U MASS jazz festival, and the Eastern jazz festival. The 1980-81 Vocal Ensemble consisted of thirty members who were very dedicated in their work and had hoped to make each of their performances better than the last. This committee consisted of four members - seniors Jackie Lovell and Jerry Graziano, junior Jim McNamce and sophomore Mike Lazaz- zera. These four had the sometimes trying job of acting as a liason between the school committee and in the students them- selves. The members, chosen through a class election, were required to attend several School Committee meetings throughout the year to help solve the problems and controversies that arose on many occasions. The Student Advisory Committee gave these students the opportunity to learn how the school committee operates, as well as gaining an understanding of parliamentary and democratic processes. Students listen to Mr. T. and arc ready to ask questions. Mr. T. expresses his views on the smoking area subject. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Eleanor H. Advisor Mr. Zabiclski, held their seldom but important meetings whenever it was neccessary to go over prominent information. Students attending the Presidential Classroom seminars re- ceived a wide spectrum of information ranging from legal as- pects to political issues concerning our government. I wonder who’s going to Washington? Advisor Mr. Zabiclski and student teacher. Mr. Grimaldi This can be a fun time! SACHEM STAFF The 1981 Sachem Staff was once again under the direction of perservering Mr. Pulaski. This year's staff was made up of seventeen members, all seniors. With a bit of a slow and unsure start, the staff soon plunged into the confusion and difficult, arduous work required to make up our school’s own history book. Several new ideas and additions were put into effect, and w ith these, plenty of controversy. During F period every day, room 40 converted into an insane asylum! Pressure to meet deadlines was the staffs biggest headache, but under the guidance of Mr. P.. editor-in-chief Terry Amellin. and associate editors Dana Johnson and Sharon Stefanik, things finally began to run more smoothly. The 1981 Prom Committee I'm falling apart already! SPANISH CLUB The purpose of the Spanish Club, under the direction of Mrs. Poudricr, was to have fun using Spanish. This they did, as well as enriching their knowledge of the Spanish language and cul- ture. Seventeen students of all grade levels were welcomed to the club, with senior Kathy Foley elected president and senior Ann Sherry chosen as secretary — treasurer. The group met once a month to plan activities and practice their Spanish by learning Spanish games. The year was highlighted by the traditional Fiesta dc Navi- dad with the breaking of a colorful pinata and plenty of Spanish food, all made by the members. The club also kept themselves very busy during March, when they played an important part in the National Language Week Program. Now repeat after me! Concentrating on some new espanol. Advisor Mrs. Poudricr. enjoyed teaching this enthusiastic club. CLUBS NOBODY LOVED ... Throughout the years. Agawam High School has founded several different groups, societies, and dubs involving a wide range of various interests. Clubs such as Art Club. Camera Club, and Literary and Drama Clubs were started to get students involved while allowing them to enjoy themselves. Recently, however, the interest in these extra-curricular activities seems to have become almost non-existent. Because of this lack of interest, it has not been to anybody’s advantage, school faculty nor students, to keep them going. Drastic elimination of these clubs was the next step The cutting of clubs such as Biology Club. Math Club, and Personality Club could be just the beginning. For any upcoming student who is interested in joining groups or clubs, his choices will be few. It should be mentioned that although Proposition 2V may play a part in lessening the choices even further, it is the stu- dent’s attitudes, now. that have dissolved several of the options that were available. 53 Class of ’83 With the guidance and support of Miss Mary Wolochowitz, class advisor, the Sophomore class officers fought for recogni- tion along with their 396 class members. Colin Wells — presi- dent. Steven Young Vice Presidnet. Debbie White secre- tary and Raclcnc Davis - treasurer, all played a part in an attempt to supply the Sophomores with gala events. During the first months of the school year, the officers planned a Christmas dance, but due to other school events occuring that month, the dance was ruled out. But the class of '83 didn't give up. they came back full force with a Valentine's Day dance and hopes for yet another function. As a whole, the class that was at first fearful and unsure, learned to overcome the fear and to participate in school activi- ties. Thus, the Sophomore Class successfully found a place for themselves in school life and will therefore finally become ju- niors next year. Oh God. Mr. P. has got his camera' I hale Monday Mornings. The big event of the year, of course, was the arrival of the ringman at last! Getting school rings was important, but not the only event in a memorable year. Mr. Rix was the class advisor, and together with help from the officers and the stu- dents themselves, the group worked hard all year to raise funds for the Class of ’82. Activities included a January dance, as well as a Spring dance, a carwash, and the original idea of an “Oldies Dance.” So it seems that the Class of ’82 is determined to prove themselves successful and their high school years a memorable period. The team captured the Valley Wheel Championship for the eighth time in the last eleven years with an overall record of 12-6. This enabled them to advance to the Western Mass, playoffs, but they were only able to reach the quarter finals. Brian Sweeney, the teams M.V.P.. managed to pitch another tremendous season for the Brownies, ending his high school career with an impressive 15-3 record. Five players. Rick Mes- senger. SKI CLUB I nder the direction of Mr. Lowrcy. the Ski Club once again had a fun-filled and prosperous year. The skiers, disappointed at last years' lack of snow, were psyched at the prospect of what looked like a more promising season. No requirements were necessary to join, with the obvious exception that one must have an interest in the sport. Approxi- mately fifty students took part in the club, meeting each Mon- day for five weeks to ski at Mt. Tom. l.cssons were available for novices, but the primary goal was just to have fun. A February ski trip proved to be the major activity of the year. Through the ski club, new skiers gained a knowledge of the sport, and for those more experienced, their love of skiing was strengthened. One. two. three go! follow the leader. Hey! I'm waiting 104 On the way to Mt. Tom! Rainbows, castles, and unicorns Of fantasies and dreams arc borne” These two lines, from a poem I had written in my senior year of high school, seemed to jump out from the yellowing page, and suddenly. I'm thrown back ten years. The poem spoke, obviously, of fantasies and fairy talc things. But. oh. how much more signifi- cant those lines seem now. All the goals and standards I had set for myself, all the things I became arc a product of those dreams and the fantasies I knew then. Our ten-year high school reunion is being held tonight, a night filled w ith promises of the revival of so many memories. But right now. I’m not thinking of how much better or worse my life turned out as compared to those of my former classmates. I'm not trying to cover wrinkles or plucking out a few gray hairs. Right now. I'm remembering ... Introducing the Class of 1981. fresh from childhood and step- ping toward adulthood. We should have been known as the Class of the Guinea Pigs, though little did we know it then. The change from junior high to high school is a drastic one. and we faced these changes with the predictable naivete that is expected of sophomores. It was not long, however, before we began to feel less like some kind of a social disease our upperclassmen were trying to hide, and more like actual active members of the high school scene. We heard endless complaints about the removal of Activity Period, and though we never quite understood what it was. we resented the fact that we had missed out on it. A seven-day schedule plan for a five-day school week did not make sense for the longest time, and that, again, took some getting used to. Rallies were another new and enlightening experience, the most important being the West Side Rally. We defeated our rivals with a score of 42-6 that year. It was a proud moment for the entire school. Even those who didn't get into sports were glad to see the enemy stomped on. I feel that one of the biggest changes experienced during that first year in high school was the meeting of so many more people, and the development of new friendships. The usual and expected cliques were formed, but for many of us. we did not limit ourselves to one group, but expanded ourselves and developed several strong and lasting relationships. Our officers for that year of 1978-79 were president Mark Ccssarini. Chris Liquori as vice-president. Sandi Nasccnbcni was secretary and Jcrilynn Sullivan acted as our treasurer. They steered us through our early confusion, and proved themselves able leaders. And so. our first year in high school was one filled with dances, rallies, and sports; the promise of more freedom in the future, and. al- together. a great test of our adaptability. Faced with more reponsibility and decisions than ever before (remember choosing your school ring??), we handled it all very well. And along the way. we were shaping our goals and ideals, getting just a few steps closer to that dream castle. By our junior year, we had made our mark and no longer felt such an insatiable need to prose ourselves. The Class of '81 svas on its way up! I seriously think that we were the class the school decided to experiment with. They took away activity period on us in our sophomore year, but the worst was yet to come. The Slope, that high point of a school day for many of us. was abolished. After months of considering an alternative, it was decided that a confined smoking area within the school grounds would be established. A system was worked out, and w ith parents permission (a problem for some) and a little sticker, you were all set. They seemed to think they were giv- ing us more freedom with the new privilege, but we felt they were taking it away. We students had confidence that the slope would never die. but much to our amazement, the smoking area worked out and seemed there to stay. Our junior year was a year most of us did a lot of grow ing up. We changed many of our sophomoric goals and set them a little higher. We knew how to stretch rules now. and tested the teachers and principals patience several times. Our own patience was tested when we had to endure freezing temperatures in class for weeks on end during a reconstruction period. Some played rebel, and refusing to tolerate the cold and insufferable conditions any longer, walked out and stood in the cold. The results from all the reconstruction going on in the school were obvious. Many renovations, such as the removal of a tremendous amount of windows (and therefore, darker halls), more classrooms in an entirely new wing, and a larger library, were made all throughout the year. That seems symbolic, somehow, all those changes going on around us. at the same time so many changes were hap- pening inside us. had Rosemarie DeStefano for treasurer. It was a good year for them, as well as for us. More dances were held, the most notable, of course, being the prom. That special night brought some couples closer together than ever, strengthening their relationships. As for sports, well, we lost the West Side football game, but our hockey and basketball team never looked better and both made it to the Western Mass finals. We (finally!) got our class rings, the event that is first brought to mind w hen recalling your junior year. PSAT'sand SAT’s prepared us for the realization of college, and our first jobs prepared us for the responsibilities of everyday life. In the spring, the seniors left, and hard to believe as it was. we were officially the new seniors, the cxhaultcd and duly respected elders of the school. (How many times did you say ‘l don't feel like a senior! ) At this point, the words of Lynyrd Skynyrd come into mind and seem exactly appropriate — Gimme three steps . Well, we were one step closer to the door. This «as the big one. 1980 1981, and we expected bountiful and endless freedom during our senior year. The school commit- tee decided otherwise. Wc were the gunica pigs once again. There is one privilege that was looked forward to above all others in your senior year: Max Ed. Because of the abuse of this privilege in the past, our class was not given the chance to prove wc could handle it in the way it was intended to be used. They voted it down. wc unanimously voted it unfair. The school really tightened up that year: rules were enforced in a stricter manner than ever before, tardies were limited, absences were checked up on and were also limited, and. in general, there was less freedom than to what wc were accustomed. They were really testing us now. and wc desperately wanted to rebel, for the confines of school began to seem more like a prison (Padlocks on the doors, maybe? Perhaps wc should have been chained to the desks!). That wc had had more freedom as sophomores was a complaint frequently heard. But. as always, wc adjusted, and though wc did not like most of the changes, we accepted them. Special consideration was given to the election of class officers for our senior year. Keith Perron was selected as president. Ann Abbey as vice-president. Beth Golcmo. secretary, and Wendy Czcrpak acted as treasurer. Under them, and new class advisor Mrs. C ha rest, wc held our kid party and senior banquet, ordered our caps and gowns, and held our own junior-senior prom. It scents fitting that a year as important as our graduation year was also an election year. Ronald Reagan was chosen president, and the people were hoping that perhaps this new leader could handle the problems of our country, the most predominant, of course, being that of the hostages being held in Iran. Yellow ribbons everywhere were there to show wc still remembered, and were proof of our hopes and prayers for their release. Another immediate result from the elections was Proposition 2V4. This would have a direct influence on us. but especially on the upcoming classes. Through reconstruction, the school had made many improvements good sports fields, better science equipment, and the promise of more. But instead of gaining new things, as we had expected, wc would lose many of the things wc had. Teachers, clubs, and our award-winning school newspaper, the Mirror'', were just a few of the items that were to be cut. Our senior year was not one of only loss, however. Wc gained closer friendships and new goals. Most of us had decided our immediate futures, w bother it include college, a job. or a family. Some dreams fade as one gets older, or they seem faraway and unrealistic. Many people don't understand that slim difference between dreams and goals, but there is one. When you're young, you have dreams. To turn those dreams into goals is to mature, and to obtain those goals is to succeed - to take the third step and reach that castle. It's time to get ready for my high school reunion now. I'm going not only to sec how everybody turned out. or locomparc and criticize. I'm going only out of curiosity: I want to sec what was borne out of their dreams and fantasies. Mary K. Steele (With special thanks to Kathy Puskcy!) Mr David Theodorowicz. Principal ... friend ... colleague ... confidant ... “I am wealthy in my friends” ... Mr T. ... a darn good principal. As all yearbooks past and present, this yearbook is to store and record all the happy and sad times at Agawam High School. This year, 1980- 1981, has been filled with many important and special events: the release of our 52 American hostages, who were held captive in Iran for 444 long days, and the election of a new President, Ronald Reagan, were two major events. With Reagan's appointment into the presidency came the renewed fear of a nuclear war balanced by the hope for a better economy and a brighter tomorrow. We. the 1981 Sachem Staff, ran into a multitude of problems during the production of this edition. Photographs got mis-filed, materials were left home when they should have been at school, the flu hit hard and caused problems with meeting deadlines, etc, etc, etc! But, even with all the grief, somehow we all made it through and it is hoped that the '81 Sachem, with its creative cover, bright end sheets, and other new additions, meets your approval. This yearbook would not have been possible were it not for the help of many people on and off the staff. A special thanks goes to all our advertisers and our yearbook representative, Mr. John Carrier; also, a special thanks to my brother Rich and my father Francis for their art Yearbook Director Editor-in-Chief: thankless jobs! work contributions. One person who cannot go unnoticed for her work way above and beyond her call of duty is Dana Johnson. If it were not for Dana this book just wouldn't have been possible. She was a great asset to the staff. Last but not least, I would like to thank Mr. Pulaski very much for all his help and understanding. He has got to be the most patient person around. (How he ever put up with us. I'll never know!) Nobody said this would be EASY. Here, sign my yearbook • • • For Reference Not to be taken from this library
