33 band the band had a fresh start this year as it was rejuven- ated by high spirits, more instrumentalists, 24 new col- orguard members, and the selection of two drum majors for expertise in drill instruction, mr. davis was assisted by his dedicated “occifers led by president anna nascembeni. performances given by the band and colorguard this year were in concerts, parades, and football games, including the uconn. vs. delaware game. the summer community band, jazz band, and the new student directed studio lab band were among the many tangents of the band, the band and colorguard. as always, looked forward to their competitive appear- ances. among the competitions won by the marching unit this year were: best colorguard in the columbus day parade and third place in field competition at lovvell. ma. the colorguard introduces halftime. practice makes perfect, even in the heat. at directs “gospel john. almost everyone’s at attention . . . the 1976 band and colorguard officers. the award winning agawam high school marching mohawk band. boy they dance funny! the band joins the colorguard on the fifty. 35 music the music department’s three vocal groups: madri- gals. chorale, and girls' chorus, were kept busy from September to june by advisor mrs. mary callahan. the groups were most active during the winter months as they prepared for their january performance of “sing-out.” many chorale members also participated in the minstrel show, which replaced the annual spring operetta this year, led by president barbara di flumera, the chorale was also busy preparing for all- western mass, district chorus try-outs, in which fif- teen members were accepted, the three groups also combined to perform Christmas concerts at local nursing homes and shopping malls, adding to the fes- tivities of the Christmas season. “putt! to you too barbara! girls' chorus gives godspell their feminine touch. chorale tunes to the b flat school bell. valeric kinnell. lois borgatti. carlene perusse. karin strehl. pat morisset. barb di flumera. fran carmel: the chorale officers decide 36 on the new music. now breathe. michelle. the best, all-western mass, district chorus. this is fun with her as the page turner!' i knew this piano was old but. . madrigals, all polished and ready to sing. sachem staff the 1977 sachem staff, working within the insane atmosphere of advi- sor mr. david pulaski’s room, has put in a valiant effort to assemble this, the 50th annual yearbook of agawam high school. as you glance through the memories captured in this book, it is our hope that you will appreciate the long hours and hard work that went into every page of the 1977 sachem, also, we hope you can visualize the staff as we were, yes. crazy;” but. most of all, determined to make this yearbook a special one. co-editors — pam mccollum and brian turnbull. yearbook representative john orrall gives point- ers to the staff. business — sue pacewicz. gait manning, and editor mary ellen montagna. assembling the 50th anniversary issue. . . U junior trainees — karen gardner, mary ball, lisa fenton. sports — editor mary mckinney, peg leclair, sue forsman. yearbook director and photographer: mr. pula- ski (and friend). 39 art club what comes next, besides more beads? and this is supposed to be art! the main objective of the art club is to instill an appreciation of art within the club members, this year’s elected officers were: president den- ise belisle, vice-president karen mallette. trea- surer sue walker, secretary mary-ann wotus. and publicity officer dianne collins. under the supervision of mrs. barbara sadow- sky. they planned the club’s activities for the year, included in the schedule were: attending demonstrations by local talent, trips to museums and exhibits, bake sales within school, and vari- ous community projects, as the year came to a close, the club can once again say that its’ goal of broadening the imagination and creativity of its members toward a more colorful society had been achieved. club officers decide on new materials. let’s have a closer look at this one! audio visual aids under the guidance of mr. william l’heureux, the twenty-six members of the a.v.a. club learned to operate the electronic and visual equipment needed within the school, the mem- bers were also responsible for the lighting and sound for plays, concerts, and rallies. the newly designed television studio, with director mr. rolland pressey, and technical direc- tor john balboni, televised many student activi- ties. broadcasting off channel wwsa-3, they aired the fourth of july parade, monte carlo night, and a program for seniors on college cred- its. they also advertised for this year’s sing-out, minstrel, and monte carlo night. both sections of the a.v.a. club have become essential in the functioning of agawam high school. (viewing the control room con- sole). “wow is this ever complicated! . . . and this here is the film. now this is the lens. 41 as schools match wits the as schools match wits team under the capable leadership of mr. joseph zabielski. underwent a very productive year. members of this year’s team included seniors matt paleologopoulos. mary de grandpre, and greg klaus. underclassmen members were mark paleologopoulos. tom drewes, mark proulx, john shaer, and Steve smith. hard work, determination, and long hours of practice after school, prepared the team for the channel 22 taping of the show this past february. as we go to press, the results of the taping are unknown, but we’re sure the team will do us proud! the group takes a break from the action. the team reviews a few challenging questions. will he know the answer? office of student affairs this year, twelve students were elected by their class- mates to represent them in the office of student affairs, the elected officers were: director jim gallerani. assistant director phil vecchiarelli. secretary karl walczak. and treasurer elaine dobour. under the leadership of mr. albert baggetta, they planned the class elections and raised money for scholarships, the outside activities of the o.s.a. included student government day massaehu- setts. local car washes, and the voice of student topics, the main objective of this topic was to propose a student smoking lounge, the o.s.a. was kept busy during the year as they worked for the best interests of the student body. mr. baggetta offers advice on a crucial issue. the representatives discuss the student smoking lounge. Si. srififr r ‘IMUSy rMUBLii« mr. baggetta gives director jim gallerani the floor. model congress the active members of the model congress, with advisor mr. john ferranti. survived another busy year, which focussed on training for com- petitions. improvements on their debating tech- niques resulted from discussions and from the taping of their “mental gymnastics. a team of four participated in competitions at north haven high school and american international college, the congress ended the year by debating their anti-trust bill, activated by jim shaer, during the annual high school model congress session held at a.i.c. advisor mr. ferranti and jim shaer discuss parliamentary procedures. the members debate issues. we got your number! national honor society an 85 academic average, good citizenship, and leadership mark the achievements of the national honor society members, these students are the first in graduation line with the president of the society giving the commencement address, president matt paleologopoulos, vice- president lori cesan. secretary sue menmara, and advisor miss jane durkan. planned the initiation of the junior members to the society, it was held at an annual coffee hour where the camaraderie, danish pastries, and donuts were enjoyed by all. junior classical league the junior classical league with advisor mrs. charest, president brian turnbull, secretary treasurer sue baj, had another one of their “cornfusing” years, meeting on the second tuesday of each month, they planned their various activities for the year, included in their schedule were the pioneer valley classical league meetings, classics day, and a visit to the museum of fine arts in boston, their annual satranalia festival was held on st. nick’s day, and they also went to an italian restaurant on the ides of march, this latin group had their annual end of the year party with the usual four hours of volleyball games. members review the many aspects of latin. even the president pays his dues. repeat after me: hic, haec, hoc. Spanish club the Spanish club was quite active during the year with projects and activities planned by philomena napoli, sec- retary judy baj. and advisor miss ida moggio. at their monthly meetings the group produced skits, saw movies, and played scrabble entirely in Spanish, the highlight of the Spanish club this year was their annual Christmas fiesta, complete with pinata and fancy Spanish pastries made by the members of the club. philomena runs over the schedule for the year. shall we proceed with the matters at hand? 44 la senorita moggio discusses various Spanish cultures. business club the business club, a vocationally oriented organization, kept business well in hand under the leadership of mrs. arlene buchanan. the busi- ness of the club was overseen by president betty rogers, vice-president patty albano. secretary historian lorraine scoville, and treasurers janet berelli and mary piquette. some of this year's highlights included a field trip to a court house, listening to guest speakers, and holding bake sales to help finance scholar- ships. business before pleasure. too much work and too little time!! the business club starts its day early. distributive education the distributive education club was involved in many community and civic projects this past year, under the direction of mr. peter lowrey, nearly all of the work was accomplished. this year, the club consisted of ten seniors who met during “a period, some of the activities in which the club were involved included: toys for tots. Christmas parties for patients at wesson memo- rial hospital, and parties at heritage hall nursing home, this year, as in the past, the club was a valua- ble asset to the school and community. red cross service the agawam high school red cross service enjoyed a very active year, the service’s dedi- cated members, under the guidance of mrs. prew, met every friday activity period, some of the red cross duties this year were baking cookies for dances at the veterans’ hospital, and collecting money to help flood and earth- quake victims, the red cross also helped with the high school stationed bloodmobile, and the many other projects delegated to them by the american red cross, their senior affiliation. too many cooks spoil the broth. it would help if you turned on the heat!! i think it said only one teaspoon!!! library staff the library staff was kept busy all year as agawam’s studious students spent many hours within the confines of the library. librarians were ms. charlotte shimel and assistant mrs. Catherine o’keefe. the library received many new books this year, but much to the dismay of mrs. o’keefe, the long-awaited autobiography of rob- ert redford, has yet to be published. the library staff gave willingly of their free study periods this year to aid in filing, checking out books, stacking, and other duties of the library. 46 chess club the chess club, for the first time in many years, became an active organization at agavvam high I school, the advisor of the club was mr. edward stentaford. the officers this year were president arthur wu, vice-president john shaer. and secretary janet webb. with no formal competition, the group met after school to have matches between themselves, this club, consisting of twelve underclassmen, was dominated by many prom- ising sophomores, who hope to better their game through their monthly meetings. i and he finally makes his move! Steve smith, lenny malanson. coach merullo. jimmy lancour. john girard. and andy ghedi were the seniors of the team, missing: gary nolin. paid tangredi tests his skill at a face- off. 95 girl’s ski team the 1976-77 ski team, led by first year coach jane benerakis. competed at ml. tom this season with a large and promising team, although young, the girls found the needed experience and proved to be a leading contender in their league, the versatile members, all underclass- men. were juniors; roberta guiel. nancy hey- wood, sheileen sapelli, terry potito, mary piquette, kelly lynch, tricia longo, michelle korob, lisa houllihan. linda godet. lisa fern, karen bianehi. lisa fenton, mary ball, and sally andrews, along with sophomores; chris fenton. and kathy femmel. with no seniors graduating, experienced members will prove to be next sea- son's strength. the team discusses their plans. gait demonstrates the correct form. the coach gives some pointers. 96 do i have to? boy’s ski team the 1977 boy's ski team, under head coach richard joseph, raced through another exciting season this year. seniors rich lathrop. tom marmo. and greg moriarty, along with many underclassmen, dominated the slopes of mt. tom. with the experience of many talented veteran skiiers. the '77 team achieved good standing in the western massachusetts ski league. the team takes an indoor break for some pointers, coach joseph tries out the agawam high slope. all equipment's ready for the meet. the ski team gets psyched!! 97 “how'd you like that stop? cheerleaders providing spirit when spirit was sorely needed, deco- rating the gym and locker rooms, trying out new routines, providing all the energy needed to keep our rally assem- blies rolling along successfully . . . all in the life of an agawam high cheerleader, constantly expending their energies to boost team spirit, our cheerleaders led by sen- iors april hadden. kim monachesi. laurie stone, and lori cesan. could always be found at work with one of their projects around the campus, there when needed, the 1977 cheerleading squad had what it takes to complete a very successful year! 99 class history . . . 100 sophomore year i clearly remember the ecstatic preparation for a nerve-racking first day of high school on September 4, 1974. as i climbed off the bus. and stood before this dismal building, i knew i had taken the first step into what promised to be an exciting year, beginning with homeroom assignments, organizing my schedule, and fumbling with an impossible locker combination, i then wandered out into the over-crowded halls to find my classes, with the help of a map which looked like a mole burrow, boy. was there ever a lot of push- ing and shoving, arguing and bloodshed, in the halls, i thought i heard someone mention that these halls were hollowed? when we finally settled into the daily routine of agawam high, we were faced with the decision of elect- ing class officers, while still in a daze we elected: cindy fedora president, wayne jarvis vice-president, donna cebrelli secretary, and fran gutowski treasurer, to collaborate with mr. james white for the best interests of our class, from that day on get your wallets out. because here comes fran for class dues and the yearbook staff for payments. became the most recognized chant within tin: halls of agawam high, how inhuman could they be. both asking for our money at the same time! as the days were slipping by. each and every one of us was judged by the lobby mob. and generally accepted into their realm of society, by the way. who gave those window stoopers the right to pass judg- ment on me? then again, who was i to have said anything about it? the upperclassmen were talking about something called a rally for activity period, i now believe that most of our class was disappointed with our first rally, not only because the majority of us had to stand or sit on the floor: but because, the upperclassmen win everything tradition still prevailed, i must admit those rallies were quite boring, the only decent one being the west side rally, watching competitions between the cheerleaders of the two schools was a lot better than listening to seniors won! other activi- ties throughout the year included: the senior-faculty football game, the winter Olympics with egg throwing competitions, and the senior-faculty softball game, those three slapstick events could have been re-runs of laurel and hardy movies! fund raising events during the year were few but interesting, the sophomore and junior classes held a monte carlo night under the direction of mrs. evelyn hamilton. it proved to be quite prosperous, and mr. t. won the largest door prize of them all. a t.v. correct me if i am wrong, but isn't there a rule against gam- bling in the school? mrs. hamilton also directed a stationery sale, which backfired into her storeroom. shall we take a look at the earth shattering news which happened within the school? our baseball team won the valley wheel title, while in football, the west Springfield terriers defeated the agawam brownies for the first time in thirteen years, the band and color guard won first place in the columbus day parade, even though they didn’t receive the trophy, the mohawks also won four awards in new jersey and new york. this was the first year without a broadway musical, but holly kinnell and bob trempe did an excel- lent job with the script of dates and mates. among my cherished memories of our sophomore year, there is one which stands alone, this experience occurred when we ordered our class rings, we spent days trying on the juniors' rings, in an attempt to make our final decision concerning the color of the band and stone of our rings, during those few weeks i felt as though i was finally on my way to becoming an upperclassman, i began looking forward to the first day of my junior year. junior year we have climbed up one more rung on the ladder, leaving the title babies behind us. and becoming the middlemen of agawam high, why did i get the feeling that we were a bunch of oreo cookies? ther class officers working in conjunction with mr. wayne morse during our junior year were: president cindy fedora, vice-president phill vecchiarelli. secretary donna cebrelli. and treasurer sue sardella. these four people busily kept preparing the class of '77 for its' senior year. isn't it funny, how all of a sudden we were considered someone, because we were juniors? receiving our class rings, was just the beginning of this wonderful feeling of acceptance, the entire class now had a place to sit at the rallies, and because of the upperclassmen win everything tradition we began to win competitions over the sophomores, we also helped to decorate the gym for the west side rally, which proved to be interest- ing without the west side cheerleaders there, some of our good natured teachers played the part of the west side gang, and were attacked with shaving cream, our class was also given the responsibility of organizing the junior-senior prom, the prom committee chose i only have eyes for you as the theme, and held the affair at chez josef: talk about the trials and tribulations of being a junior! this was the year for new ventures on agawam high s part, the american field service was introduced into the school, and with it came our first exchange student, peter concannan from england. this service did prove to be worthwhile for all concerned, peter learned of our cultures as we learned of his upbringing, in an effort to raise money, the a.f.s. held a volleyball competition between the classes, our class just happened to win. do you suppose it was the old double '7 at work? mr. dark's prayer for a greenhouse was finally answered, the construction was started and continued through the closing of school, now mr. dark's plants don't have to worry about developing claustrophobia. the various activities scheduled during the year included: the senior-faculty football game at which the teachers defeated the students, the winter Olympics during which the contestants walked around with whip- ped cream dribbling out of their mouths, and the senior-faculty softball game at which tom shaer had his fun ranking on the teachers, i swear each year these events become more ridiculous than the year before, what do you say we write a comic strip about them? mrs. hamilton once again directed a monte carlo night, with the help of the sophomore and junior classes, i wonder if the administration has informed her of the rule prohib- iting gambling yet? we were also privileged to be spectators at a karate show in the gym. the earth shattering news this year was. the agawam brownies defeated the west Springfield terriers in their rivalry game, the girl's swim team had an impressive season, the agawam high school magazine, the mirror. won seven awards at american international college, in the white division they won five awards, along with the awards for the best all round paper and press bowl, they also placed second at the Columbia scholastic press conference in new york city, the chorale and chorus stuck to the bicentennial theme in their sing-out and musical, the 50th annual musical entitled yankee doodle. featuring brian turnbull and sharon cusson. made mr. davis's 20th musical a special one. the chorale also participated in an exchange concert with con- cord. new hampshire. the color guard won first place in the st. Patrick's day parade, after marching through a tornado, the mohawks also marched in the fourth of july parade, the long awaited t.v. studio was finally com- pleted and great plans have been made for its usage. i have a confession to make, though i couldn’t wait for my junior year to begin with all of its glories, about half way through it. i was sitting on pins and needles waiting for it to end. true it was a very good year, but the time had come for us to take that final step up the ladder, because our senior year was just around the corner. senior year we. the class of '77. rounded the bend and began our senior year as each class before us had. as soon as the class of ’76 graduated we immediately assumed our roles as the window stoopers, the senior win everything recipients. and all round antagonists, we may have been pains in the eyes of the admin- istration and underclassmen, but it was all worthwhile: so that we can someday sit back and say. boy. what a year, though we assumed our roles in june, and headed right into our positions in September, our senior year slipped by so fast it almost received a speeding ticket. by the time our senior year had officially begun, i had a typical case of writers cramp, i swear between class elections, max-cd. yearbook, college and scholarship applications, we must have filled out more forms than the president ever secs, our class advisor mrs. evelyn hamilton and her merry four- some: president cindy fedora, vice-president lori cesan. secretary donna cebrelli, and treasurer sue pacewicz had a typical year planned for us. sure i don't like things stereotyped, but when it comes to caps and gowns . . . i firmly believe each class should be unique, though graduating in any other than the school colors is totally assinine. ma” hamilton did an excellent job in planning the kid party, where all us kiddies at heart could rekindle memories of our childhood, our party must have been extra special because we had two santas there, and raven hill provided the entertainment for the evening, our senior banquet held at the kimbell towers was the complete opposite of the kid party, at this affair we had to let the mature, sophisticated side of ourselves show through, we also had the annual senior class picnic, along with an added attrac- tion. a country fair, the junior-senior prom was once again held at chez josef’s. . . those three slapstick comedy events: the senior-faculty football game, winter Olympics, and the senior-faculty softball game, became agawam high classics in our eyes, i guess your prospective changes on everything when you are in the limelight. boy. have we had a busy year just with the senior activities, let alone the other events in which we participated throughout the year, the juniors held a gong show for anyone who wanted to make a fool out of himself, the sophomore and junior classes along with mrs. hamilton ran the annual monte carlo night, people have always said that gambling was habit forming. as for the earth shattering news this year, the agawam brownies once again defeated the west spring- field terriers in the traditional thanksgiving day game, the mirror won first place awards at holyoke community college for the best all round paper and feature, the band and color guard marched through snow, icy waters, and chilly winds to capture third place at the state competitions in lowell mass, the frostbitten mohawks were much warmer in atlantic city, new jersey this spring, the chorale's annual singout was made bigger and brighter, because to the dismay of many, there was not a broadway show this year, a student directed minstrel, which was staged in march, tickled many fancies, the american field service held an a.f.s. weekend where students from all over the world visited us here in agawam. besides all these events, there was a huge peanut fight in the cafeteria the day following the presidential election . . . could this have been a way of boycotting carter?
